A teen who left school early on prom day to get her hair done was banned from entering the dance.
Shatara Shorter, a 16-year-old student at Northeast High School in Oakland Park, Fla., looked gorgeous when she pulled up to the prom with her date, Quaedae Robinson, on May 12. In fact, the teen’s mother had spent $1,000 on her prom look — a long, blue lace dress, a manicure and pedicure, false lashes, makeup, and an eyebrow wax.
With her mom’s permission, Shorter had left school early that day for a long-awaited hair appointment to entwine a gold chain through her bob.
However, when Shorter tried to enter the prom, a woman at the door asked for her ID. “They were basically waiting for me,” Shorter told Miami news station WPLG Local 10, which broke the story.

The couple was informed that while Robinson was welcome to enter, Shorter had broken a school rule that reads, “Students must attend half of the classes on the day of an activity in which they want to take part unless they have been excused or exempted from class by the school administration in advance.”
“The school’s students, teachers and staff worked extremely hard to make the prom a positive and memorable experience for all attending. During prom week, via multiple announcements, school administrators reminded students of the attendance requirement for participation in prom. The student and parent in this incident were reminded of this requirement prior to the student being signed out for the day. In addition, school administrators offered options to the family that would allow the student to meet this requirement by attending the latter half of the school day, which the family declined.”
However, Shorter’s mom, Shenika Dennis, has a different story. “I called the school one day before the prom and told them about her hair appointment,” Dennis tells Yahoo Beauty. “I was also never informed about the rule.” What’s more, Dennis says that while her daughter wasn’t the only one to leave school early that day, she was the only one penalized for it.
A true gentleman, Robinson declined to enter the prom because his date wasn’t welcome. “I was not going to leave my prom date — I came with my prom date, I asked her to go with me, she was one of the reasons why I wanted to go, so I wasn’t going to leave her,” he told WPLG TV 10.
The couple finished their evening with a drive to the beach and dinner at a restaurant; however, mom Dennis is transferring her daughter to another school, saying, “If the school had an issue with what happened, they can talk to me — not take it out on my daughter.”

OK - prom is awesome, but school is school. You don't skip school to get your hair done. Geesh. And it sounds like she missed MOST of the day, when school policy requires her to be there at least half the day. The other kids probably waited until half the day was over. If we check out before 11, it's a whole day absence, after 11 it is not. And I don't believe for a second she didn't have the opportunity to know this rule.

DD's high school had the same rule - you had to attend school and complete 4th period. So after 4th period, there was a huge exodus of girls leaving school to get their hair and makeup done. I think they should hold prom on Saturdays to avoid this issue, but it's more expensive to rent the venue on a Saturday.
It's difficult to get a hair appointment in a time frame that will accommodate the time you have to be at pictures, grand march, etc if you don't book MONTHS in advance.

Wanted to clarify that I think the OP was justly excluded. She knew the rules - I bet it's in the handbook. DD knew her handbook so well that students wanted her to "represent" them at discilplinary committees. But as a proctor she was a "judge".

I remember having to be at graduation practice at 7 am the morning after Prom. it sucked and such an over reach of power by the school. I showed up, hung over( drinking age was 18) It was soo stupid.

Sucks for her, but as was mentioned, it was probably spelled out pretty clearly in the Student Handbook, what requirements there are for attending a school activity.
Ignorance of the rules is no excuse (just in case she didn't know, because she was too ignorant to read the rules), nor a reasonable reason for requesting an exemption.
She definitely is dressing a little too risque for her age. If she were 18, I'd think she looked great. But 16? She's inviting trouble.
Why don't they hold proms on Saturdays, so the girls can get their hair/makeup done? Personally, I did not go to my prom. But if I had, I would have done my own hair and makeup. But that's how it was done in the 70's/80's. My BFF, who has since gone on to become a makeup artist, did my makeup for senior pictures.
The Best Prom in America (not me calling it that - Readers Digest, TMZ, Seventeen magazine and several others) is on a Saturday night and is held at the high school. It is local to me. Pennsbury High School. Students do the decorations, it is themed and the public can walk thru until 3:00. There is a parade and usually a celebrity who dj's or band that plays.
There is a lot of crazy over the Prom. It's pretty much a lost day at school. And going bananas over hem lines and off the shoulder dresses, etc is a bit much. She said she called the school the day before and informed them. Yes, there are "rules" but there is the spirit of the law and the letter of the law. If she called the day before and they were notified then I don't see what the big deal is.
I do not feel a bit sorry for the girl or her mom, they now have learned that actions have consequences.
I do feel bad for her date, because she ruined his fun.
I hope he went back and went to prom.
As for her dress, it's really difficult to find a prom dress that is age appropriate now.
And the same dress will look different on everyone.

Kudos to this young man. He actually skipped his own prom for her. That is a very gentlemanly and chivalrous thing to do in the age of me, me, me. And, maybe he should move on from her.
That cut isn't really that high, in the picture with her sitting, it doesn't look any higher than a regular dress hem girls would wear.
The cleavage may be a bit much, but I don't think it is inappropriate for the event.
I don't know, maybe it's all the dresses I watched girls try on when trying to find Caitlyn's prom dress.
We gave them levels,
Middle school sweetheart
High school prom
Bridesmaid
Dancing with the Stars
Street walker
To me, this is between a high school prom and bridesmaid.

Our homecoming dance was immediately following the game.
Prom always on Saturday.
But, that was when schools used their own gym or commons.
Now, everyone wants a venue.
And you can't all get Saturday because of other events.

Games here arent often over until after 10:00. By the time the football players and cheerleaders got showers and got dressed, it would be 11:00 before they even got to the dance. That's ridiculous.

Actually depending on the custom of the day, I may start something where the kids prior to the Prom have a catered dinner at my house, do pics, give them a ride to the Prom and back and maybe drive them to the beach, rent them a cottage.

That's what we did.
I'd come in from the field, change from my uniform into my dress, redo my makeup and hair cause usually it was all sweated off.
Our games ended about 9ish, dance lasted till 12.
We got maybe an hour and a half.

I went to prom twice.
Both times, my friends and I stayed for a little while, but we had more fun at party going on downtown.
And the traditional super late, almost morning, Waffle House breakfast was always the best meal ever because we were starving by then.
All this to say, breakfast around 4 am will be the most appreciated.

We tried to have a rugby team at some point, but there weren't enough girls or guys to make up a team. They tried to make it a co-ed team, but then they realized that not only did nobody want to play anymore but that there weren't any other co-ed teams to play against. Dumbasses.

The other girls managed to stay at school long enough not to get banned. They said they told her as she was checking out. Who gets told "If you leave now, you can't attend prom tonight" and still does it?

Someone got extreme joy out of working hard at making sure she did not get to attend her prom. I loathe these kinds of people.
Probably the person who told her multiple times not to do it, and she did it anyway, not believing the rules would actually apply to her. Why would you hate a school employee for enforcing school rules? Should they just let the kids do whatever the hell they want? How is that fair to the kids that actually stayed in school long enough to be counted present for the day?

I am not saying she should have gotten away with it. I am saying there are certain people that live by the rule book and get very very happy when they get to exert power over someone else by pointing out the rule book to them.

So, she shouldn't have gotten away with it, but the person that enforced the rule is a jerk?

Yeah. They are a jerk in my book. They are a jerk in my book cuz you KNOW they got a lot of enjoyment out of taking something wonderful away from someone.

That is a very cynical way of looking at it. And I don't agree. I don't agree b/c based on the statement, they went out of their way to make sure this girl and everyone else knew the rules, giving her every chance to do the right thing. And everyone else complied. I don't think they enjoyed having to enforce this rule but you can't just ignore the rules so as not to ruin her night or you'll have everyone ignoring them.

WHY have a rule if you are not going to enforce it?
You mean like the travel bans? Or the immigration/deportation laws?
I agree that if they have a rule it should be enforced. Sadly, there are a lot of rules that aren't enforced. There seems to be a new thing today...for instance, we have a new Deputy Director who commented, "if we have a rule, and no one is following it, then it's not a rule anymore." WTF? Personally, I feel if you aren't going to enforce it, then repeal it. It's too confusing to know which rules are enforced and which aren't.

I was JUST about to say that!!!!!!

I agree. However, the "zero tolerance" type policies have led to absolute silliness. Punishing kids because they turned a poptart into the shape of a gun, etc. There needs to be commonsense in the law and in rules. And, there is so much drama surrounding the prom, then being overly punitive only just adds to the silliness of it. However, the school has to maintain order because the reality of human beings is that when you give an inch, then they want a mile. So, if should be made VERY CLEAR, that if you do X, you WILL NOT go to Prom. Period. And, as long as that is made very clear then fine. However, being on the School Board, i find that this is not always the case. And, that punishments are meted out for trivial things at times and then larger things are sometimes brushed off.
This is a clear cut if you do that, this will happen.

I do not think a rule that says you have to attend so much of a school day to take part in school activities on that day is unreasonable, whether it be sports, clubs or dances. School is about SCHOOL. Prom is a privilege, not a right.

I was never one for extra curricular activities, but at my kids' schools, from K-12, if you were not at school that day, you could not participate in ECAs.

I'll admit it. When someone blatantly breaks the rules and flaunts that they don't have to play by them AND then gets the punishment, I take joy in that. I fully believe in karma and enjoy getting to see it served.
When someone has your name, and they are waiting for you at the prom door so they can tell you you dont get to participate... yeah. THOSE people get my stinkeye.
