A fearless man wrestled an 8ft python into a pillowcase using a broom after stumbling upon the savage reptile in his garage.

Joseph Liscinsky was 'startled' when he spotted the deadly snake just a foot away from him at his home in Pembroke Pines, Florida, on Friday morning.

The 60-year-old managed to pin down the snake's head using a broom to stop it attacking his 14lb dog Midnight, who neighbors said was like 'his baby'.

The brave homeowner then tussled with the non-venomous reptile, which sank its razor sharp teeth into his hand, before managing to haul it into the pillowcase.

'I was startled. My heart went 'boom!'' he told WAFF-48.

Mr Liscinsky, who has encountered alligators and Nile monitors from living next to a canal for 22 years, admitted he was unsure if it was a rattlesnake.

'My adrenaline kicked in and my heart started pounding. I was stunned because I was a foot away from it,' he told the Sun Sentinel.

Mr Liscinsky immediately called his neighbor, who ran over with the broom and a pillowcase, he explained in footage for Local 10.

He put the end of the broom to pin the snake down and picked him up with one hand, before managing to stuff it in the pillowcase.

'I held its head down and picked it up, and then it did an automatic wrap around,' eh explained.

Mr Liscinsky revealed that he had learned the trick on 'Wild Kingdom,' a show about nature and wildlife.

The brave homeowner kept the snake in the case until wildlife officials arrived.

He admitted his main concern was for his dog Midnight, who he picked up and put safely inside before going 'to town' on the snake.

'That thing would have wrapped him [Midnight] up, broken his bones and eaten him,' he said.

Mr Liscinsky revealed he had just let his dog Midnight out for a morning walk when the snake slithered over.

'I was standing, I was watching him. It's lucky that I came out. I was standing there and then I looked down and saw the snake,' he recalled to the Orlando Sentinel.

'The snake could have easily rolled up on him. Easily. He's only 14 pounds.'

He believes the snake could have come from a canal near his home and stayed at the garage overnight.

'I live on a canal,' Mr Liscinsky said. 'Those things use the waterways to travel. If this was wild, there may be more out there.'

If he sees any more pythons, he plans to build a fence, he says.

Neighbor Zelma Colon said she was surprised Liscinsky took on a python, but understands that he did so to protect his dog.

'That was very brave of him to do that,' she said. 'He loves that dog. That's his baby, his life.'

He should have killed it.

Pythons are not indigenous to Florida.

Uh, no. I would have tried, with a square blade shovel, to get it off my dog, but if it were between me and the dog, the dog would be sacrificed, as heartbreaking it would be to have to watch. I would have called animal control and let the experts take over at some point.

A cousin of mine found one of these in their kennel.

It was after her pups.

She dragged it out, pinned it's head and shot it, then chopped it's head off.

She lives in Alabama.

People buy these things thinking it'll be a cool pet.

They don't realize the thing can get 8 feet long or longer and weigh over 100 pounds.

Then they let them go in the woods and they eat the wildlife.
