The Essential Difference Between Christianity and Islam

The Essential Difference Between Christianity and Islam

The essential difference between Christianity and Islam is the difference between Jesus and Muhammad. Jesus was a spiritual leader who laid down His life to save the world. Muhammad was a spiritual leader, who became a political leader, then a violent military leader. Jesus accomplished His mission by dying on the cross. Muhammad accomplished his mission (at least in large part) by ruling by the sword.

There are, of course, great similarities between the world’s two largest religions. Both point to a holy book, allegedly inspired by God, for faith and practice. Both call for high moral standards and serious personal commitment. Both share common traditions, since Muhammad learned from Jews as well as Christians. And both have a vision to spread their faith around the world.

But this is where the two faiths diverge. One follows the example of a crucified and risen Savior. The other follows the example of a prophet and military leader.

And so, the biblical verses of violence (as in, “Kill the Canaanites”) were limited to a specific place and time, and no such commands are found on Jesus’ lips. The Quranic verses of violence (as in, “Kill the unbelievers wherever you find them”) do not have such obvious limitations. And so, while many Quranic interpreters and Islamic jurists claim that those verses cannot be applied indiscriminately today, others differ, proudly citing them in their jihadi manuals.

Again, the difference is that of the cross vs. the sword. That’s why Jesus and His followers never established the death penalty for leaving the faith. Muhammad established it once he assumed military dominance. And the death penalty for apostasy from Islam remains in force in a number Islamic countries today.

In the same spirit, Muhammad beheaded some of his enemies. Jesus forbade His followers from taking up the sword in His defense. The differences are glaring and clear.

Just compare the teachings of Jesus in the Gospels with those of Muhammad in the Hadith. Jesus never calls for violent acts against enemies of the faith; Muhammad often does. That’s why there’s no gospel (or apostolic) equivalent to the lengthy collection of Muhammad’s military raids.

Accordingly, the most tolerant expressions of Islam are found when: 1) Muslims are the minority in a country, as in America; or 2) the Muslim-dominated country is quite secular, as in Indonesia. In contrast, in strictly observant Muslim countries, there is limited tolerance for non-Muslims.

If you don’t believe me, try setting up a public Christian mission to Muslims in Saudi Arabia or Pakistan or Afghanistan or Iran. Tell me how many minutes it lasts.

I do commend those Muslims who call for a more tolerant expression of their faith, and they abhor the terrorism carried out in the name of their religion. But if they are honest, they will have to admit that violent Islam has a long and rich history.

To quote the noted Catholic scholar of Islam Samir Kahlil Samir, “I speak about the violence expressed in the Qur’an and practiced in Muhammad’s life in order to address the idea, widespread in the West, that the violence we see today is a deformation of Islam. We must honestly admit that there are two readings of the Qur’an and the sunna (Islamic traditions connected to Muhammad): one that opts for the verses that encourage tolerance toward other believers, and one that prefers the verses that encourage conflict. Both readings are legitimate.”

Thus, acts of violence carried out to advance the Christian faith are the extreme exception to the rule. Acts of violence carried out to advance the Islamic faith are all too common.

When it comes to freedom of religion, a country like America, founded on Judeo-Christian principles, has allowed this essential liberty from the start. And in a country like England, which also has a rich Christian history (despite its current backslidden state), Muslims can practice their religions freely, even proselytizing non-Muslims. In contrast, if Muslims became the majority religion in England, non-Muslims would become second-class citizens, with limited freedoms (like Christians in Pakistan), unless they converted to Islam.

It is true that both faiths seek to spread their message by disseminating information. And both faiths point to the sublime message of their founders. But the message of Jesus leads to liberation while the message of Muhammad leads to subjugation.

Again, I know there are moderate Muslims who seek to reform their faith, and many of them are honorable people. And I know that some of them believe they are being true to the real spirit of their faith.

But there’s a reason that, generally speaking, true Christians are persecuted by true Muslims rather than true Muslims persecuted by true Christians. It is the difference between the cross and the sword.

The God you worship is known by how your believers behave.

I'd rather promote the "essential" similarity between them. Both are roads to the same God. The sooner that fanatical Muslims realize this, the sooner there will be an end to terrorism

That is your opinion, but most Christians I know don't believe they are the same.

There is only one way to God and that is through Jesus. Unlike Judaism and Christianity the Muslim faith wasn't started by God but by a false prophet. Jesus himself said that He is the Way.

Are you referring to the same path or the same God? I will agree that they aren't the same path.

The God of Abraham however is the same God for all three religions. Abraham had only one God, and all three religions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam) are descended from there.

Is there some need to feel that "all religions are the same" or that "all religions lead to the same God" This is absolutely silly and absurd.

Democrats and republicans are the same. They both believe the same things because they vote for politicians.

Actually, you make a good point. Your guys's Left and Right are the same. They have different beliefs, but both have the same President. And, in the end, the wind up fighting over who's path to the Presidency is better. So yes. Democrats and Republicans are the same. Good analogy!

Well good. Then Dems need to stop running around saying Trump is not their President and therefore should support everything he is doing since he is the man in charge! Great!!

There's only one path to God and that is through Jesus.

John 14:6New International Version (NIV)

6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

The difference between Christianity and Islam is simple to see and understand.

The path to God is through Jesus, and you must accept that Jesus is the ONLY Son of God, was born of a virgin, died on a cross and rose on the 3rd day. You serve God by living by his commandments to love one another.

In Islam, they follow Mohammed, a soldier, who taught to kill anyone that doesn't convert to Islam. Mohammed did nothing for his people, he is still dead. The faith of Islam is based on hate and death for everything that isn't Islam.

The God of Christianity is about creation and life.

The god of Islam is about destruction and death.

Those who believe as strongly as you do about their own religious texts would think that that is nonsense and that THEIR book is correct. With equal passion that you are about to display regarding how wrong their are.

Well, for me and my house, we read Old and New Testament. The jews insist the Old testament is the ONLY testament, but according to MY new testament, in the end, even THEY will come to realize Jesus is the way.

Quran Bible
1. Suffering is an excuse for violent revenge and establishment of Islam by force: "And slay them wherever ye find them, and drive them out of the places whence they drove you out, for persecution [of Muslims] is worse than slaughter [of non-believers]...and fight them until persecution is no more, and religion is for Allah." (Quran 2:191)
 1. Suffering builds character: "We also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope" (Romans 5:4)
2. Emphasis on this World: "And Allah has made you heirs to their land and their dwellings and their property" (Quran 33:27)
 1. Emphasis on the Next: "Mine is not a kingdom of this world" (John 18:36, see also Luke 14:33)
3. Kill, convert or subjugate Christians and Jews: “Fight those who do not believe in Allah or in the Last Day and who do not consider unlawful what Allah and His Messenger have made unlawful and who do not adopt the religion of truth from those who were given the Scripture – [fight] until they give the jizyah willingly while they are humbled.” (Quran 9:29)
 1. Share one's faith with gentleness and respect: “But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, “ (1 Peter 3:15)
4. Martyrs as Killers : "Allah hath purchased of the believers their persons and their goods; for theirs (in return) is the garden (of Paradise): they fight in His cause, and slay and are slain" (Quran 9:111)
 1. Martyrs as Martyrs: "As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter" (Romans 8:36)
5. Killing Apostates: "They but wish that ye should reject Faith, as they do, and thus be on the same footing (as they): But take not friends from their ranks until they flee in the way of Allah (From what is forbidden). But if they turn renegades, seize them and slay them wherever ye find them" (Quran 4:89, also Bukhari 52:260, 83:37...)
 1. Letting God Judge Apostates: "For we know Him that has said, 'Vengeance belongs unto me, I will recompense,' says the Lord. And again, 'The Lord shall judge his people'" (Hebrews 10:25-30)
6. Punishment: "Let not compassion move you from carrying out God's law..." (Quran 24:2)
 1. Mercy: "Love is patient. Love is kind... It keeps no record of wrongs" (1 Corinthians 13:4-5)
7. Charity and Non-Believers: Mercy toward fellow Muslims - ruthlessness toward unbelievers. Muslims are warned not to befriend those outside the faith. They must even ensure that their charity tithe (zakat) stays within their own identity group. (Quran 48:29, 3:28, Sharia)
 1. Christians are specifically told that even those who hate them are entitled to kindness and charity. They should be loved and cared for as surely as any fellow believer. (Mark 10:25-37)
8. The Qur'an explicitly instructs men to beat disobedient wives - as a last resort. (Quran 4:34, Sahih Muslim 2127)
 1. "Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them." (No permission to beat women) (Colossians 3:19)
9. Explicitly allows Muslim men to rape their female slaves, even those already married. (Quran 4:24, 70:29-30, 23:5-6...)

 1. God wants all people saved (1 Timothy 2:4)
12. Warns Against Questioning Faith. (Quran 5:101-102)
 1. Welcomes Intellectual Challenge. (1 Peter 3:15)
13. Violence as Virtue: "Fighting is prescribed for you, and ye dislike it. But it is possible that ye dislike a thing which is good for you, and that ye love a thing which is bad for you. But Allah knoweth, and ye know not." (Quran 2:216)
 1. Violence as Sin: "Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: 'It is mine to avenge; I will repay,' says the Lord. On the contrary: 'If your enemy is hungry, feed him... '" (Romans 12:19-20)
14. Hell for unbelief: Good deeds count for naught: (Quran 18:102-107)
 1. Hell for bad deeds and the failure to do what is right (Romans 2:6-8, Matthew 16:27, Matthew 25:41-45)

It HAS TO BE the same God, because there is ONLY ONE.

As humans, we are pre-programmed to believe in God. It's the religion that screws everything up in other cases.

Do not confuse religion with God.

Islam worships the God of Abraham, which is the Christian God of the Old Testament.  What they do not believe is that Christ is the son of God and our savior and the Holy Trinity.
