I don't think it does. I think there are some things that brand matters, others not so much.

What say the geeks?

I agree, it does depend on the product.

Mom gets her panties in a wad anytime store brand anything is bought.

If it is on sale, I may buy a name brand product, otherwise, no. It really does depend on what the product is.

Depends on the product. I buy Simply Heinz ketchup. No other will do. No high fructose corn syrup. Tastes like the ketchup i loved as a kid. There are some brand name things that seem to be a better quality. I will try off brands and generics but if they don't measure up , i don't get them again.

As far as fashion goes, there are just too many imitations running around of brand names. And they are not necessarily cheap.
If you are buying just to show off the name maybe brand is important (if it is really the brand...)

Foods, I always buy the brand of the market I am shopping at. TruValu at Aeon; CGC at the consolidated grocers shops; and I forget the name Walgreens uses, but it is sold in Seiyu over here as Walgreens owns a controlling interest. Find that often times, the market brand is better than the well-known brand.

Only thing I do not buy like the above is bread; cannot beat the taste of the major bread makers.... Unless you are going to a very small bakery that is run by a family and then it is terrific or just awful.... LOL

About the only thing I buy that's name brand is kraft American slices.

I can't think of anything else.

Sometimes the brand is better. Toilet paper for example. Generic toilet paper is not soft and it takes 3 times as much to get the same absorbency as Quilted Northern or Cottonelle. Generic paper towels are no where near as absorbent as Viva or Bounty. And generic tissues will hurt your nose a lot faster.

Basically any paper product - the generic sucks compared to the brand name.

Also - the store brands matter, too - each one is different, some are good, some are not.

Crayola crayons are better. Sharpies are better. Cascade is better. Ticonderoga pencils are better.

It's a cost analysis - if something is going to not last as long or take more of the product to work, I'd rather buy the more expensive b/c in the long run, it's often cheaper.

Not all Kraft slices are real cheese, you have to watch what the packaging says.  The individually wrapped slices are "cheese food product".

There is a brand of cheese puffs in our stores "Chester".  Much better than Cheetos.

Meh - Kraft is better than the mainstream alternatives.

Kraft Cheese slices -
Ingredients: CHEDDAR CHEESE (MILK, CHEESE CULTURE, SALT, ENZYMES), WHEY, MILK, MILK PROTEIN CONCENTRATE, MILKFAT, WHEY PROTEIN CONCENTRATE, SODIUM CITRATE, CONTAINS LESS THAN 2% OF CALCIUM PHOSPHATE, SALT, LACTIC ACID, ANNATTO AND PAPRIKA EXTRACT (COLOR), NATAMYCIN (A NATURAL MOLD INHIBITOR), ENZYMES, CHEESE CULTURE, VITAMIN D3

Bordan Cheese slices (I couldn't find the ingredient list on its own site)
Milk, Milk Nonfat, Milk Protein Concentrate, Buttermilk, Calcium Phosphate, Sodium Citrate, Corn Syrup Solids, Salt, Sodium Phosphate, Lactic Acid, Sorbic Acid (Preservative), Xanthan Gum, Locust Bean Gum, Guar Gum, Flavors Natural, Colors Added, Cheese Culture, Enzymes, Vitamin A Palmitate

Obviously - the Kraft is better.

However, real cheese ingredients -

Applegate American Cheese slices -

Ingredients
Cultured Pasteurized rBST-Free Milk, Water, Salt, Sodium Citrate, Enzymes [Non-Animal], Made With Vegetable Rennet.
Spices
None

Yes. The great cheese debate.

I like the American cheese on my burgers, and it melts perfectly on grilled cheese, and makes scrambled eggs yummier.

Cheese!

I tend to read ingredients and make choices that way, rather than relying on brand names. More and more I'm seeing ingredients I cannot pronounce so I try to avoid those items.

Here in Texas, HEB has its own line of paper
products: toilet paper (either SOFT or STRONG)
is wayyyyyy better than Cottonelle or Quilted
Northern. Their paper towels are stronger and
more absorbent than Brawny, Bounty, or Viva.
HEB breads are on a par with the national
brands, and much less expensive. And HEB
specialty breads (think baguettes or rye breads)
from the in-house bakery are far superior.

Dishwasher detergent - only Cascade will do
Cat food or litter - HEB
Frozen veggies - HEB
Soups/broth - HEB
Sugar/flour - HEB
Spices - only McCormick

At Costco, anything with the Kirkland brand is just as good as name brands.

For the dishwasher, I like Finish Tabs.

Hunt's ketchup and tomato products.

Tide and Downy for the laundry.

I always tell my husband that I buy for value - not price. I like nearly all Kroger Brand things - hence they are a good value. But if I did not like the brand? Any savings would be moot as I would not eat it.

I will buy scratch and dent and consider it a good value as long as the scratches wont matter or wont show.

But if its a brand that has high quality and will hold its value for resale then buying the name brand actually saves.

Yeah, I think that the brand, the item and it's pricing must all be taken into consideration. Like, seriously. Who wouldn't want a $185 paper clip?

Here’s How The Internet Reacted To Prada Releasing A Paperclip For $185 (10+ Pics)
1.1Mviews
By Giedrė

There are many things in life that $185 will get you, including an insane shopping spree at your local dollar store, but of all the things to spend your money on, we can’t think of anything better than this $185 paper clip from Prada.
Yes. That’s right. A paper clip for the bargain price of $185. It’s made from sterling silver and, unlike normal boring paper clips that only hold documents together, this one holds your money, or whatever money you have left over after buying one of them. Sounds awesome, right? Well, not according to the internet, because people on Twitter were clearly not impressed by Prada’s latest release. See for yourself below. What do you think? Snazzy fashion statement or ridiculously overpriced nonsense? Let us know in the comments!

Now, dishsoap matters. Cheap dishsoap makes me break out, and you have to use 6 times the amount of Dawn to get the dishes clean.

When trying something new, I only get one and the smallest I can get.

If it's good, I buy it again, if not, I dont.

Mayfield is the brass ring of milk around here, but I've found that Food City has a milk that is just as good, better really, and costs 2 dollars less.

Mayfield ice cream isn't as good as it use to be. I like Kays.

But Mayfield sour cream and cottage cheese is the best tasting.

I like Dawn dish soap. It's more cost effective.

I buy off brand cleaners mostly. Generally which ever is cheapest. Dollar General bathroom cleaner with bleach works just as well as clorox bathroom cleaner.

Dollar General feminine pads are only $4 and work great. Always gives me a rash every time I use one.

I'm not a Colonial bread fan. It's too dense and crumby at the same time. Kerns works.

We buy Aldi milk. I had to give up Mayfield b/c it's not rSBT free.

Also - I buy Publix organic ice cream - it's wonderful.

We only buy Martin's bread, buns, rolls, etc.

I tend to buy generic. I don't notice much of a difference.

One of the few things I'll only buy name brand is Velveeta. I've tried the store brands and they don't taste the same. I don't buy it often but I want the taste of it to be spot on when I do buy it.

SB has a diabetic cat. This poor kitty pees....a lot more than a regular cat.

SB has to get a litter, that can handle the flood.wink

And not turn into a mess.

I grew up on generic and government food being somewhat staples in the household. Store brand was a huge step up.

There are a few things that I prefer brand name over.

Hellmans mayo and Skippy peanut butter.

I can only use Tide or All Free and Clear laundry soaps.

Sensitive skin sucks.  I sometimes travel with my own sheets, depending on how long I am giong away.  I try to use VRBO over hotels for longer stays.  1-2 nights is okay, longer I need to use my own or wash them with the F&C.  Towels are usually okay.

So what brand booze??

Timepieces? You mean a watch? I gave up my watch when we all started carrying our cell phones constantly. But, prior to that, i wore Timex watches cuz i liked the indiglo thing to check my watch.

Firearms, I have a smith and wesson 642 J frame .38 special with crimson trace. I kind of like the Bond Arms snakeslayer which is 2 shot gun but has interchangable barrels. I also found a gorgeos Kimber. But, i don't go shooting, i only carry from time to time for personal protection. So, i really dont' need another gun.

I'm a sensitive skin'er too. I've tried most detergents for sensitive skin but Tide Free and Clear was the worst. I used to use All but one time A&H sensitive free and clear was on sale so I bought it. I've been using that for over ten years with no problems. Most everything I buy has to be free and clear of scents and other things or I'm scratching myself to death practically.

well, don't drink anymore but used to consume copious amounts of scotch--single-malt,neat--no water, no ice--and believe me, you can taste the difference between cheap(well)scotch and brand-name stuff--am fortunate enough to own a pair of charlie dunn boots--the best have ever seen/worn/bought, period--by timepieces, yes, meant watches--cartier/rolex--quite simply the best in the world--boats,sort of personal preference/use intended for but again, quality of workmanship/design is easy to appreciate--years ago we transitioned from consumers to conservers and we'd rather buy quality once than keep replacing junk

I used to always buy generic, but I've learned I usually prefer name brand. I like Target and Sam's Club store brand stuff though. Except for alcohol. I recently needed rum and decided to try the Sam's brand, a big bottle too.. DH calls it lighter fluid. We are going to have to find another use for it cause I'm not drinking it.
