I'm not sure why this is called human trafficking. Were they kidnapped? Or were they trying to get smuggled into the U.S. illegally?
I guess I don't get "human trafficking". Back when I was growing up, we called it pimping, and most, if not all, targeted runaways. They weren't snatching kids out of stores, etc.

Sad, yes.
Pimping denotes willing prostitutes. Human trafficking turns people into slaves and includes children. Not just sex slaves, either. Some work slaves. It's called human trafficking because people are bought and sold, they are held captive and they are not willing participants - even if they are runaways.
It is currently the largest and fastest growing crime against people in the world.

People post advertisements for foreign workers, mail order brides, etc. and when people answer those ads, they are turned into slaves instead. It's horrible.

Yes, this is all true. And why I am so against prostitution. For the headlines to talk about Human Trafficking I think that is the angle the investigation is looking. at.

It's my understanding that human trafficking is people pay someone to get across the border and those who paid are held as "slaves" working basically for free to pay off the debt of paying someone to help them cross the border. It's a catch 22 and they almost never get the "bill" paid in full because as they're held as slaves, they're also charged room and board, which is added to their "tab".

Most of Human Trafficking has to do with the sex trade.

That's only a small part of it. Human trafficking occurs all over, not just as a result of Mexican border crossing.

A lot of commercial fishing is done with slave labor. Commercial fishing boats also may have sex slaves on board. Human trafficking is more than helping people immigrate and then being indentured servants. It's about slave labor across all sorts of industries. Coffee, chocolate and bananas are frequently grown and harvested with slave labor.

Not in the US. Commercial fishing as strict regulations including a gov't monitor that goes out with the boat.

I'm sorry. Did you actually just say it couldn't happen b/c the government regulates it?

There are many kinds of human trafficking. Interpol describes the following types -
Types of human trafficking
There are many forms of trafficking, but one consistent aspect is the abuse of the inherent vulnerability of the victims.
Trafficking for forced labour
Victims of this widespread form of trafficking come primarily from developing countries. They are recruited and trafficked using deception and coercion and find themselves held in conditions of slavery in a variety of jobs. Men, women and children are engaged in agricultural, fisheries and construction work, along with domestic servitude and other labour-intensive jobs.
Read about our operations targeting forced child labour in Africa.
Trafficking in women for sexual exploitation
This prevalent form of trafficking affects every region in the world, either as a source, transit or destination country. Women and children from developing countries, and from vulnerable parts of society in developed countries, are lured by promises of decent employment into leaving their homes and travelling to what they consider will be a better life. Victims are often provided with false travel documents and an organized network is used to transport them to the destination country, where they find themselves forced into sexual slavery and held in inhumane conditions and constant fear.
Commercial sexual exploitation of children in tourism
This crime type has been apparent in Asia for many years and has now taken hold in Africa as well as Central and South America. The phenomenon is promoted by the growth of inexpensive air travel and the relatively low risk of prohibition and prosecution in these destinations for engaging in sexual relations with minors.
Trafficking for tissue, cells and organs
Trafficking in humans for the purpose of using their organs, in particular kidneys, is a rapidly growing field of criminal activity. In many countries, waiting lists for transplants are very long, and criminals have seized this opportunity to exploit the desperation of patients and potential donors. The health of victims, even their lives, is at risk as operations may be carried out in clandestine conditions with no medical follow-up. An ageing population and increased incidence of diabetes in many developed countries is likely to increase the requirement for organ transplants and make this crime even more lucrative.
People smuggling
Closely connected to trafficking in human beings is the issue of people smuggling. This has taken on new proportions in recent months, especially in the Mediterranean region, and it is clear that organized criminal networks are taking advantage of the humanitarian crisis for financial gain.

We have a lot of Mexican migrant workers. Shrimp boats, strawberries, tomatoes, landscaping, hotels, etc. Go to Wal-Mart 8pm on a Friday. There will be 3 or 4 "camp" buses. I bet my right arm a lot of these people aren't documented. Thing is, many of them were teachers and nurse's etc in their country. They want out so bad they will endure anything for a chance at a better life. This is why they are so easily taken advantage of.

My mistake. But it isn't the whole fishermen are free to help the sex trade thing. And the monitors are not assigned to one boat all season, they mix it up.

The US has a long history of hiring migrant workers, legal ones. If there are illegals, that totally on those not enforcing federal law.

Like the article, but of course it was about the Asian fishing industry.

The death toll has risen to 9, plus they found another
alien hiding in a wooded area near the Wal-Mart. They
are not sure how many others were picked up by waiting
cars before the police and paramedics arrived.

The one under that one. It was about fishing off the coast of Hawaii and how it's undocumented Asians on board who are fishing in US waters, on US owned vessels and are enslaved.

Slavery is not always done with chains and locks. It is through fear, threats and intimidation. "Talk and I'll kill your family". The traffickers are very good at making people look like regular workers.

Hopefully, the driver will incriminate others in this
scheme, and the authorities can find some money
or insurance. I'm worried about the children - do
they have any family here in the US?
