Anyone else excited about the eclipse? I was in elementary school and really don't remember the previous one in our area. We're going to one of the places along its path to take photos.

Charleston is going to be a mad house! All hotel rooms are sold out. People are renting out rooms in their homes for crazy prices. We are close enough to be 98% totality. Good enough for me.

Lucky!

Literally every hotel within 100 miles of Nashville is booked...It's going to be crazy...
One of the major cities visited by the eclipse is Nashville, Tennessee. Folks in Nashville will be singing about this eclipse for years to come as it is the largest city wholly within the path of totality.
We estimate that the centerline in Tennessee is the closest destination for 55 million Americans. We further estimate that between 360,000 and 1,440,000 people will travel to Tennessee on eclipse day. Details at

I think the timing, is going to tank my trip North.
I don't want to be on the highway, with all of the folks, going to see the eclipse.
It might be better, if I put my trip off until October.
I think that is the way to go.
I don't want to get caught up in all the folks, going to see the eclipse.
So, I will wait, for a bit.
A very wise decision, FWM.
Nebraska is closing the interstate to all semi's on the 21st. The state is expecting close to a million visitors for the event. Farmers are renting out their hay fields for observers. Now lets hope it's not a cloudy day! Hahahaha

Casper, WY will have 100% and they are about 148 miles from us. I am hearing motel rooms are going from $1,300 to over $2,000!!!! if you can even find any. Local ranchers are renting out spots in their pastures. I am good not seeing 100% I shall stay home and see what I can see from my deck LOL

My neighbor has several welder's masks - he's loaning them out to us to view the eclipse.
And, you are trusting, that this is safe?????
Holy moly, don't do that!
Oh my gosh....please, get eclipse glasses, that are safe to use.
(You can sue him later, after you go blind. Don't take the chance, with your eyesight. Get some eclipse safe eye glasses. They don't cost very much. I ordered 10 pairs for $25 on Amazon)
Please, don't trust a welder's mask.
Oh my gosh, I'm going to be sick...if Momala thinks this is safe to do.
lollllllllllll As are many of us since the traffic scare and price of rooms scares us!
If you plan to watch it, have you got some Eclipse glasses, to protect your eyes?
I ordered some from Amazon. They aren't expensive.
Please, Good Geeks, get some eye protection, if you plan to look.
I wouldn't want anyone to go blind.
Just a suggestion.
On the news this morning there is a story about lots of eclipse glasses being sold that are worthless. The story said before buying them to make sure they have the NASA symbol on them and the full company name on them. Lots of scammers apparently.

How to View the 2017 Solar Eclipse Safely
Eclipse viewing safety chart
Looking directly at the sun is unsafe except during the brief total phase of a solar eclipse (“totality”), when the moon entirely blocks the sun’s bright face, which will happen only within the narrow path of totality (go.nasa.gov/2pC0lhe (link is external)).
Eclipse glassThe only safe way to look directly at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun is through special-purpose solar filters, such as “eclipse glasses” (example shown at left) or hand-held solar viewers. Homemade filters or ordinary sunglasses, even very dark ones, are not safe for looking at the sun; they transmit thousands of times too much sunlight. Refer to the American Astronomical Society (AAS) Reputable Vendors of Solar Filters & Viewers (link is external) page for a list of manufacturers and authorized dealers of eclipse glasses and handheld solar viewers verified to be compliant with the ISO 12312-2 international safety standard for such products.
Always inspect your solar filter before use; if scratched or damaged, discard it. Read and follow any instructions printed on or packaged with the filter.
Always supervise children using solar filters.
Stand still and cover your eyes with your eclipse glasses or solar viewer before looking up at the bright sun. After looking at the sun, turn away and remove your filter — do not remove it while looking at the sun.
Do not look at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun through an unfiltered camera, telescope, binoculars, or other optical device.
Similarly, do not look at the sun through a camera, a telescope, binoculars, or any other optical device while using your eclipse glasses or hand-held solar viewer — the concentrated solar rays will damage the filter and enter your eye(s), causing serious injury.
Seek expert advice from an astronomer before using a solar filter with a camera, a telescope, binoculars, or any other optical device. Note that solar filters must be attached to the front of any telescope, binoculars, camera lens, or other optics.
USA map with eclipse pathIf you are within the path of totality (go.nasa.gov/2pC0lhe (link is external)), remove your solar filter only when the moon completely covers the sun’s bright face and it suddenly gets quite dark. Experience totality, then, as soon as the bright sun begins to reappear, replace your solar viewer to look at the remaining partial phases.
Outside the path of totality, you must always use a safe solar filter to view the sun directly.
If you normally wear eyeglasses, keep them on. Put your eclipse glasses on over them, or hold your handheld viewer in front of them.
Note: If your eclipse glasses or viewers are compliant with the ISO 12312-2 safety standard, you may look at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed Sun through them for as long as you wish. Furthermore, if the filters aren't scratched, punctured, or torn, you may reuse them indefinitely. Some glasses/viewers are printed with warnings stating that you shouldn't look through them for more than 3 minutes at a time and that you should discard them if they are more than 3 years old. Such warnings are outdated and do not apply to eclipse viewers compliant with the ISO 12312-2 standard adopted in 2015. To make sure you get (or got) your eclipse glasses/viewers from a supplier of ISO-compliant products, see the American Astronomical Society (AAS) Reputable Vendors of Solar Filters & Viewers (link is external) page.
An alternative method for safe viewing of the partially eclipsed sun is pinhole projection. For example, cross the outstretched, slightly open fingers of one hand over the outstretched, slightly open fingers of the other, creating a waffle pattern. With your back to the sun, look at your hands’ shadow on the ground. The little spaces between your fingers will project a grid of small images on the ground, showing the sun as a crescent during the partial phases of the eclipse. Or just look at the shadow of a leafy tree during the partial eclipse; you'll see the ground dappled with crescent Suns projected by the tiny spaces between the leaves.
A solar eclipse is one of nature’s grandest spectacles. By following these simple rules, you can safely enjoy the view and be rewarded with memories to last a lifetime. More information: eclipse.aas.org (link is external) eclipse2017.nasa.gov

I absolutely LOVE you for your concern about
the welders' mask. I did some research, and a
general welders' mask is about 200% darker
than what is being offered as cheap eclipse
glasses. An arc welder's mask is about ten
times darker than a general, so happily we're
not concerned about damaging our eyesight.
Welder's masks are rated from 6 to 10, 10
being the darkest. Our friend is loaning out
his masks, which are rated 8s and 9s, but
my goodness are they heavy!
There was a movie when I was a kid called "Night of the Comet" and Halley's comet was coming and it was a big deal and everyone made plans to be outside and watch, parties, etc. - just like this. Then, when the comet came by, everyone got instantly turned to dust. The only survivors were people who happened to be inside something metal at the time.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
My former boyfriend's father (whom I worked for) was born during the year of Haley's Comet. Then it returned on his 75th birthday. Boyfriend bought a nice telescope for him to view it. Ironically, he died shortly after. That's my Haley's Comet memory.
So, people are calling me right and left wanting to crash here on the Sunday night before. So far, I have 3 couples staying here. One couple in the guest room, one couple on an air matress in the music room, and another couple on an air matress in the living room...
