New Microwave

I'm in the market for a new Microwave. I previous had a Sharp that was not only a microwave but a toaster oven. I loved that thing but it went kaput. They don't make that one any more and can't find one like it. So, what do you guys recommend for a decent microwave? It doesn't have to be huge or fancy. I don't do much with it other than heat up a few things.

I would just get whatever Walmart has that looks good to you. Personally not a fan of microwaves all that much. Just need something to defrost and reheat a few things.

No is a good time to find a deal on a small one. Walmart, etc restocked this time of year due to the college kids needing them.

As for brands, a lot of brands are built by the same manufacturer and they simply slap on a different label. Some things might look slightly different on the control panel, etc but if they are built by the same manufacturer then I don't see that much difference. I am not as brand conscious anymore now that I know that the many products are the same but the exterior, box or marketing is really the only difference.

I don't know about microwaves, but most small appliances are made by whirlpool but sold under different labels. Even GE sold their stove section to a Chinese company who still uses the GE label. I like LG because of the little chiming and I've had better luck with their appliances. My current microwave is Whirlpool which I have had about 6 years and I'm expecting it to go out any day now. Why? Because we purchased it at the same time we bought the dishwasher and oven/range and the other two have long since died. The oven died the first time I used the self-cleaning function and again a couple months ago. The dishwasher motor died after 4 years. So I'm pretty much done with any Whirlpool products.

That being said, while I do use the microwave for defrosting and warming up leftovers, I found (when my other microwave broke) that with a little planning I can live without a microwave. But then again, I grew up and learned to cook before microwaves were invented. And I still wonder about the health affects of microwave ovens, although I'll admit the convenience out trumps my concern.

So sorry, I don't have any suggestions except to avoid whirlpool products. If that's even possible.

Well, I haven't had a microwave in over three years so I've obviously been able to get along without one. lol But, I do miss it for a quick warm up of some stuff. I'm just thinking it would be nice to have "in case".

I've had my Whirlpool Estate micro for 13 years,
and everything still works fine. The backing on
the control panel has yellowed, but I think that's
normal for plastic. My (gas) stove went out, and
we replaced it with a Samsung - still happy with
it!

Just check the features. My microwave downstairs drives me crazy. It has a timer on it, but if you are using the timer for something, you can't use the microwave. How stupid is that?

When I use my timer and want to use the microwave, I have to press cook time first or else it messes with the timer.

When we remodeled our kitchen we got the microwave over the range. I hate having a huge microwave. A small microwave is all i need but that would have required counter space. So, i settled on that. And, it's fine except it beeps 3x as soon as it's done. Then if you don't go up and get it immediately, it will then beep 3 more times, then 3 more times, then 3 more times! WTH!!!!!!!!!!!

Hahaha my Oster toaster oven beeps like that. Drives me nuts. But, it also has a preset timer. It's set for 30 minutes and will shut off automatically. Frustrates the living daylights out of me because I have to get up and turn it all back on again. I have tried to find a way to turn off the timer but to no avail. I've contacted the company and they insist I'm nuts that there is no preset timer. I argued with them. They sent me a new one and guess what . . . it does the same damn thing. No preset timer my a$$! evileye

I can disable the sound. However then there is no sound and I kind of like the sound when i am typing in the time. However. I have disabled it because who ever designed it to be continually is an ASS! It's Frigidaire so avoid that one! lol

I rarely use my microwave. I have one that is over the stove type and do like it. I like having a microwave because I would prefer DD doesn't use the gas stove/oven when I am not home.

My microwave is installed at counter height,
between two storage cabinets, and it is
absolutely perfect! Since I'm short, I don't
have to stretch up on my toes to deal with
it, especially if there is something being
heated on the stovetop. That design is
really not safe.
