The restaurant business is a competitive industry, so it's no wonder that eateries want to try to stand out somehow.

But frustrated diners are calling for the trend of serving food on anything but a plate to come to an end, after photographing some truly absurd food containers. 

From scallops on forks and bacon hanging on a washing line to a minature shopping trolley containing prawns, these are the most ridiculous ways food has been dished up to customers recently.

The pictures were all posted on the We Want Plates sub-Reddit - a spin-off from the popular Twitter account of the same name that shames the worst instances of food served on anything but a plate. 

And the hilarious photos will make you glad to see a simple and plain white plate when you next dine out. 

People on Reddit were perplexed as to what you're supposed to eat in this dish but surmised that it was the tiny blob of orange goo sitting on top of a bed of uncooked dry lentils in a hollowed out crab shell
