He was a man who help many people. There is a documentary series on Amazon about him and his empire. I was seriously impressed. Check it out, it is much more than his magazine.
Consider how he promoted many civil rights, including for women, especially for those who willingly posed for the magazine. The man was about much more than women without clothes on. He held all his employees, including the girls, to higher standards and never made any one of them do anything they did not want to do.
Oh, that's right, I forgot you only see one side of a person and refuse to see any other opinion of it.
Yes, he loved women and sex. Yes, he made tons of money (and almost lost it all too). But he brought many free speech and civil rights issues to the forefront with his magazine, clubs and television shows. Did you know he helped foundations that helped rape victims? Did you know that he was one of the first to have black entertainers enter thru the front door of the establishment, not the back door? Did you know he was a large advocate of the LGBTQ community?
And the women voluntarily posed for him. He did not force any one of them.
The magazine was a lot more than naked women, and even those were tasteful.
I bought them because the information in them really was thorough. News, politics, products. It was truly a well rounded magazine.
In the last 5 years, he ended the nude pictures and went digital. There never was a whole lot of nudes in each issue.
I'm not usually the one to defend this kind of thing, but Playboy was more than just naked women.

LGS, have you ever seen a Playboy? I don't mean on a store shelf, I mean actually read one? Cover to cover?
I have. Had a subscription for years.

who are you responding to? I hope not me. I have never had an issue with women playing or manipulating men to make money to support themselves, well except for the christian thing. I do have an issue if human trafficking is involved though, which includes prostitution.

No, not you. LGS actually.
Fornication is generally consensual sexual intercourse between two people not married to each other. Yes, Hugh Hefner promoted sexual relationships. So what. That is not a illegal. Did you have pre-marital sex? Then you fornicated too if you did.
Consensual sexual activities including looking at naked people (men and women) can be part of a healthy relationship.
Playboy did not use sex in their photos. They used nakedness. Was it seductive? yes. Sexual? no. They refused to show full nudity for the longest time.
You can celebrate him if u want. Doesnt take a genius to make money off of naked women.
So I take it you've never actually read Playboy.

He promoted free speech and prohibited his female "employees" from complaining because the viewers/readers were male and they already had someone in their lives to complain and he was creating a fantasy world. Seems kind of hypocritical of someone who supported free speech and women's rights.
though it's a bit of an old cliche, the articles and caliber of journalism published in the magazine were exceptional(particularly from the mid-60's through the late 70's or so)--pieces on art, politics, contemporary music/jazz/rock/etc, american culture--and the interviews-- most of them were outright stunning--not spun, not judgmental, not confrontational or self-serving but rather genuine, personal questions/answers with some of the most influential americans of our time
like him or not, he was his own man and lived this life well--rip

It was not just him. People sure bought Playboy up. Many of the early publications sold out. The demand for nudity has been around for far longer then Hugh Hefner was alive.
The Sistine Chapel shows more nudity than Playboy did. Renassiance art shows more nudity and porn that Playboy did. Should those works of art be banned? Are they morally offensive too? Why do we teach about it in art history?

Actually, he encourgaged his female employees to speak up. Especially in his casinos. He would not tolerate his "girls" being mistreated.
The difference is one is a painting and the other is a photograph. Actually, the Playboy is more covered up than the Renassiance one.
Exactly.
My point is, if one is art, how is the other porn?

He promoted a lifestyle of random sex. So if u wish to pretend his legacy is about one picture then fine.
I'm not saying I agree with everything he did.
I'm saying the magazine was good.

I agree the magazine had excellent articles in it. There was another magazine back in the 60s, 70s, maybe 80s, with nudes in it that was soooooo much more raunchy than Playboy. I can't think of the name of it but it was more to what LGS is describing. It was super bad.

Name them? I've read them, but that doesn't mean I'm going to be able to tell you the title, author and date of publication. Their interviews are usually wonderful.
Since I've read them and you obviously haven't, you don't really have a basis for opinion on matter.
I'm not saying Hugh Heffner was a great man - he certainly was not, but as far as girlie magazines go, his was the mildest and most tasteful, AND had great articles. It was not all about skin.

Here is a list of articles that the critics like. People like Margaret Atwood, Kurt Vonnegat, Alex Haley's interview with Martin Luther King, Jr., and more -
Who cares? You don't need to look at nude pictures to read them. Sheesh.
Well, exactly. You don't have to look at the pictures of the women to read the articles. I've read many Playboy articles and I really have no interest in looking at naked women. Of course, I realize you can do one without the other.
