If you haven't used it in the last 12 months, toss it.

Yeah, I hear all that. The problem is that when we start cleaning out we discover "treasures" that we might still use or that Aunt Myrtle or Uncle Clarence or the neighbor or somebody might want (and then promptly forget to ask them if they want it.)
Probably a better way is fire, flood, earthquake.... Just a complete new slate....
I am not sentimental or attached to stuff other than pictures and my kids' artwork. Other than that, i really don't have a problem tossing things. However, sometimes you feel like there are things you might use or need so that gets a bit trickier.
Every once in awhile I look for something I want to use and realize I tossed it during one of my cleaning rants. Sometimes I end up buying it again. I have no problem throwing things out. I only save some of the artwork. They come home with so much I can't possibly save it all. I started saving when they were in preschool and by the time they started kindergarten I had two huge boxes. Nope, not doing that anymore.
I think you need to consider your kids as well. I honestly can't imagine either of my sons caring about their old report cards or artwork. I think DD would have more interest in that.
Granted, at times I find something I want to keep, so I keep it.
My kids things? I have a few things. I don't think I kept any report cards, but I have a few of their certificates. Some notes and cards they've given me over the years.
I don't keep much of anything.

But I might need it "some day ".
Parameters: clothes, can you wear it? Will you wear it? When was the last time you wore it?
Kitchen, do you use it? When was the last time you used it?
On and on.

If you lost it in a fire/flood, would you miss it?
