Cancelling Classes
Permalink

My son's car is in the garage so i was going to drive him to his college classes to today.  Anyway, he got an email that his class was cancelled.   The prof is going to a conference or some bullschit.  Why is it they can cancel classes?  And, we can't do a thing about it.  That is just wrong.

Most colleges don’t have substitutes. The best thing you can hope for is if they have a grad student or TA that can take over the class. Otherwise, missing one class isn’t the end of the world. Usually if it was a planned thing, the prof would have handed out an assignement in advance or there would still be assigned reading on the syllabus

First world problems.......

I've never EVER heard of a sub in college. Hell, before texts and emails, a student would just show up and there may or may not be a note on the door.

This wouldn't even be a blip on my radar.

No, it's not the end of the world. But we pay money. Unplanned events like illness, etc. sure. But going to conferences, no.

It's no different than schools having the day of for teacher in service days.  Public schools require that teachers take so many CE classes a year.  So they cancel school all together.  Would you rather the entire University cancel classes?  That's ridiculous.

One can do their CEUS another time. There are webinars, weekend conferences, etc. So, whatever. What are you even talking about cancelling the entire university? Who said that? Sheesh.

Actually, planned is better. That way they can prepare something for that time.

However, it doesn’t sound like this was actually planned, if your son found out this morning. It would have been announced and most likely listed on the syllabus.

I didn't ask for a sub.  Just show up and do your damn job.  I know that is expecting a lot nowadays.

You're the one freaking out about 1 cancelled class.  Sheesh.  It happens.  ALL THE TIME.  Request your $15 for this one hour back if it means that much to you.  I think you are severely overreacting.

That's ridiculous.  There are times that you have to be away from your "job". Maybe this IS part of his job.  Maybe leading this conference is a requirement to keep his job.  I have to be away many times from my "job" to attend crap that really doesn't help me.  But we have to take so many ridiculous classes a year to keep employed. I no longer have any people directly under me, but I have to take 4 employee management courses a year because of my title.  It happens.

Yes but they would be scheduled ahead of time allowing for plenty of notice to be given to students. Prof could have even instructed them to get together as a group and do some sort of project while Prof was out.

This kind of thing is not uncommon, I'd even bet it's happened before, other classes, that you didn't even know about.

Don't flip out, have lunch with your son and enjoy a little one on one time with him.

The professors don't choose when the conferences are scheduled.  You don't change an entire college calendar schedule because a professor is going to miss one class to go to a conference.

Well sure, but conferences are not scheduled the day before, so this was planned in advance, just the students weren't told.

It certainly is.  She's sounding like a liberal.  No one can disagree or it's "piling on".  Playing victim much?

That maybe so.  If I were a commuter student and that was the reason I went to school as early as I did that day or at all, I would be put off too sine many Prof's degrade your grade if you are absent though.

Not here they don't.  They don't care if you show up or not.

Two of DSS's classes were half on site, half web based.  They were not supposed to be.   The professor let them know the night before if they needed to be in hall or not.

Meh.  How many times do kids show up and the profs don't without any warning or note?  Happens all the time.  That's why there is a rule in most schools about how long you have to wait for a late teacher/professor.

I would've loved to have had an email before I left for class. I got there and there was a note on the door if class was cancelled for the day. Sometimes. Sometimes, I'd get there and wait ... and wait ... and wait. Other students would enact the 5 minute rule and leave. I had other classes so I'd shrug and do homework for other classes.

I spent many years in college to get my professional degree. I have also been Adjunct Faculty at a major university. So yeah, guess i have been there and done that. Obviously my son doesn't care, but I pay the bill so yeah, i care. I expect to get what i paid for. Another way of me "being a liberal" i suppose.

Exactly.  This has been going on forever.  I would think getting an email before class would be appreciated.

Three years of physical classes and only once did a professor not show up on time due to being in an accident. Otherwise, if a class was cancelled, we knew at least at the class right before if not in advance.

At least you got an email before you left.

I never understood these teacher work days where they don't show up for class. But that is for grade school. College, I would think they should notify the class in advance of such prescheduled cancellations and perhaps have a make up day. Aren't the students required to meet certain attendance requirements? The same should apply to teachers.

Well, that would be pretty lax.  I never had a class that required 100% attendance.

In law school, if we missed more than two classes in a semester, we were placed on probation.

Law school is quite different than college.  Although, most of my classes did not have an attendance policy, per se.  But if you were not there the day you got called on, your grade would be affected.
