Summit conditions at Mount Washington were so brutally cold Saturday morning the temperature tied for the second coldest on Earth, according to Mount Washington Observatory.
The temperature hit -36 degrees Fahrenheit with a wind chill of -90 F (-68 Celsius), according to the educational and research institution in New Hampshire.
"We basically just start saying it's stupid cold outside," Mike Carmon, senior meteorologist at Mount Washington Observatory, told The New York Times.
The summit of Mount Washington sits at 6,288 feet above sea level.
Frigid conditions have also gripped other parts of the Northeast and are expected to last most of the weekend. Temperatures were in the single digits from Philadelphia to Boston on Saturday morning and expected to fall closer to zero Saturday night, with wind chills making it feel like -10 degrees to -20 degrees.
In Burlington, Vermont, the temperature was -1 F Saturday morning, with a wind chill of -30. It was 8 degrees in Philadelphia and New York City, with wind chills ranging from -9 to -11.
Mt Washington is always cold, even in the summer. Those are fairly normal temps, skied it in my younger days.
Yep, when I lived up that way a couple years ago, I remember being on Mt. Wash in August and needed my wool clothing to stay warm. Sure was beautiful. I did some skiing at Bretton Woods. Definitely needed good warm clothing to do so. lol
Experienced minus 40 the winter of 1958-59 in northern Iowa. Scary. You could actually feel the cold coming in through the walls... Lasted a couple of days. Once is more than enough times to experience that.
it's going into the 30's tomorrow, that is 45 degrees warmer than when I woke up today. I feel like I should have a cook out but there is 2.5' of snow on my deck and to get to the grill would be difficult.

Yep, we're supposed to steadily climb this week to near 50 by Friday. Holy sheep, IKWTDS, that's a lot of snow! Hopefully, with the temps being as low as they were, it's a light, fluffy, powdery snow.

Yep. I have that much do to it being light and fluffy plus the wind blowing during the storm put more snow on the deck than actually fell.

We might not have school tomorrow - they are watching it closely. It's going to rain tonight, so the roads might ice.
All the schools are closed here.

I have to say that the wording for the school closings around Atlanta made me chuckle. They closed for the "potential" of inclement weather. Whether we get any or not - it's possible, so we're going to close schools now rather than wait and find out.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
Well. At least it won't be a 4am call or a last minute call.

We're closed again here, too. The boys have had a five day weekend. Telework is suspended this week because some contractor is scanning our equipment this week so I'm forced to take leave.
