You're the scrapbook queen, what's the basics needed to get started? I wander through the aisles at Hobby Lobby and get overwhelmed with all the stuff.

Which paper is better?

Which glue?

Where do you get the books/binders?

Ok. Basics are good cardstock with some coordinating patterned paper. Most people make the mistake of just buying paper they like and it doesn't match anything. I'd start with a pad of cardstock and a pad of coordinating paper. I like DCWV stacks. They are regularly on sale at Joann or Hobby Lobby for $10 a stack. You will use the cardstock for the page bases, and the paper as accents. You can usually also find coordinating die cuts (cut outs of themed stuff) and stickers. You can then add ribbon, washi tape, etc.

Most of the time, you'll do a 2 page layout, so when the album is open, the pages flow together.

Tool wise, you need -

A good paper trimmer - I use Fiskars
Good scissors, regular and small detail
Tape runners - my favorite is Duck brand at Joann, but many people love Tombow
Glue dots

For an album, I'd get a 3 ring album. It's easier to move pages around. You put your pages in page protectors and they go in the binder.

Let's examine this page for the elements needed to complete it -

Saint Nick Scrapbook Page

They used a mottled blue cardstock base page, and coordinating red cardstock to be photo mats.  The paper is cut into strips to place around the page - that could have come from multiple pieces of paper, OR they have pages that have multiple coordinating strips you cut apart.  They then accented the page with a die cut of ornaments, a ribbon around one of the photo mats, two brads and a photo corner in the top left  IMO - the brads and photo corner are unnecessary.

For a beginning scrapbooker, this is mostly just paper and easy to do.  As you get more experienced, you may want to add more.  For layout ideas, you can go to Pinterest and put in "scrapbook layouts" and tons will pop up.  I like sketches, which is a black and white sketch of a page that you can use your own paper and ideas on.

This is a simple double layout -

Reunion scrapbook page idea

It uses paper, stickers, and a couple of die cuts and a flower.  The ribbon across the bottom right could be paper, ribbon, or washi tape.  The dimension comes from layering paper.

You could also start with a page kit or two that gives you everything you need to complete a layout except maybe the cardstock.

This is a very simple sketch. To complete the page, you use cardstock in the back, 3 coordinating pieces of paper, put three pictures on top, and then some stickers or die cuts or rhinestones or buttons where the stars are.

Then you have a title, which can be a title sticker, or letter stickers, or something similar.  The bottom corner you could not do - or you could journal there - describe what is happening in those pictures.

Scrapbooking is a fabulous, wonderful, addictive and expensive hobby.

It is. All of that.

Which is why I want to start small, try to spend as little as possible, to see if I like it.

Is it something that once you build up supplies, it's not that expensive?

Well, that depends on how much you shop.  biggrin  You CAN keep it simple, but there is sooooo much pretty paper and stickers and ribbons and washi tape in the world!

I've seen LL's scrap book room. Yeah, don't do that. My guess is she her inventory cost as much as my car.

No way I'm doing that!

I have 2 projects in mind. 1 is a scrapbook for Jesse and Abigail. The other has to do with the family reunion.

Some group will hold crops at local churches. If you go to one they will be more than happy to help a newbie learn!
