I notice more and more trash on parts of the interstate when i travel it. I mean were people ALWAYS tossing jugs of urine out of their cars and trucks? It's just disgusting.
Don't you remember the old "Keep America Beautiful" adds from the 70s?

Our County allows people who need Community
Service hours to pay them off by cleaning our
local streets/highways. By examining the bags
of litter that are collected, we've been able to
determine the "owners" of the bags of garbage
collected off our streets. If the owners can not
show that their bags of garbage have been
"taken" from their bins, they are fined - and
rightly so - plus they have to serve community
service hours - including the bosses. Its fun to
see Management wearing reflective vests and
heavy duty gloves picking up the road kill and
beer cans ! The local companies that collect
our garbage give at least three to four days a
month, collecting garbage from our highways.
We had one company that tossed multiple bags
along the highway. They mixed the garbage
from multiple employees and disposed of them
along our main highway. Community Service
workers sifted through the garbage, and came
up with three identifiable addresses. You should
have seen the faces of management when they
were served with SERIOUS fines for littering
our highways !
I don't litter trash, but if I've finished an apple or banana, I don't keep that in my car, I try to toss it as soon as possible.

Apples and bananas I can understand -
they are bio-degradable.
Two years ago when our Community
Association had a clean-up day, one
of our friends found not one, but TWO
$20 bills! Its amazing what gets thrown
out.
I will toss apples or bananas or spoiled fruits or veggies into the forest. My parents have a creek with a ton of wildlife and the boys have contests throwing potatoes or old bread to see if they can hit the creek.
