Student, 21, is finally reunited with her suitcase months after JFK winter storm bags fiasco, and finds only a bikini top and a single boot inside – before being offered just $180 compensation for the $7,000 contents
Aly Abrams, 21, was heading to Spain from JFK when a winter storm caused travel chaos at the airport with flyers being separated from their luggage
Abrams flew Air Europa and has been going back and forth with the airline for over two months
When she was finally reunited with her luggage it was ripped open, taped back together and had just a bikini top and a single boot
Abrams says she packed almost her entire wardrobe for the long journey
The airline finally offered her money- but only $180, and if she accepts it she relinquishes the right to pursue further action
A bikini top and a single boot was all that was returned to a college student, now living abroad, whose luggage was lost during a winter storm that crippled New York's JFK airport months ago.
Rutgers student Aly Abrams, 21, was moving to Spain to study abroad for five months and says she had pretty much her entire wardrobe with her for the long journey.
When Air Europa finally returned her luggage, it was ripped open and crudely taped back together.
It contained just the two paltry items, which each on their own are useless.

After months of back and forth with Air Europa, Abrams says she was offered just $180 for her troubles. She says she lost about $7,000 in clothing
She says she lost about $7,000 in clothes, and has spent months going back and forth with the airline trying to locate her items.
Never heard of this airline. I wonder how their overall reputation is.
If she was looking for the cheapest ticket (and got it) this is something she should have been aware of - baggage handling, connections, etc. are NOT good on some of these airlines.
As for the compensation, I think somewhere in the fine print of the ticket it states how much will be paid for loss of baggage.... Sorry this happened to her but think she just has to suck it up.....
5 months would equate to at least
two seasons of clothing, but nowhere
near $7K. That being said, $180
would cover just enough for a long
weekend. I think the airline should
pony up around $3K - ESPECIALLY
since they did such a piss-poor job.

Note to self: don't every fly on AirEuropa.
I fly no airlines that do not have business with the FAA, if they don't they do not have to follow the FAA's safety rules and other restrictions.

Well, doesnt' the fine print of your agreement/ticket spell out what you will be paid if they loose your bag? And if you have $7 worth of stuff in your bag, why aren't you choosing to insure that?
But, a couple pairs of designer boots. And some nice jewelry.
Not to mention a couple of nice handbags.
And, if she shops at Soma, or somewhere similar, for her bras and undies. Well, there's a grand, right there.
I could put 7K in a suitcase, no problem.
And boy, would I be pissed, if it got lost.
(That's why I drive!) LOL!
I agree.
Our luggage was lost for a few days when we went to Scotland and we were surprised at the total when we added up the value. I don't think our total reached $7k, but I think of us as pretty low key, lol.
Shoes, clothing, coats/jackets, makeup, jewelry (even fairly cheap jewelry adds up) and the cost of the suitcase itself.
We haven't decided to give up flying, but we hope to not check bags again.
I don't know, 7k? I must be poor as hell, the contents of my suitcases is probably a couple hundy. Of course, I shop at secondhand stores so maybe even less

I can see this if you are going to be living in another country for 5-6 months. You have brand new appliances because of the change in voltage - and 220v hairdryers and curling irons are not cheap.
And don't forget, she probably packed 5-6 months worth of: meds (even OTCs), feminine hygiene products, toiletries, facial products and cosmetics. Its not like she can go to Walmart if she ran out of contact solution. The odds of finding her brands are slim and will cost SOO much more in Europe than in the US.
She would have to have winter, spring and summer clothes, because Europe's weather can fluctuate from cold to rainy to hot and back all in a week.
Living in Europe vs a week visit requires better shoes due to the cobblestones. They destroy Payless, Target and even Vans.
Yeah, I think I had a good 4-5 grand in my suitcase when we PCSed to Germany and THAT was because we would have access to the BX and Commissary if necessary. So I can see it.

I think the cost is replacement value as well, not what you actually spent. I shop a ton of sale/deals and rarely pay full price, but if I had to restock my whole wardrobe I likely wouldn't have time to shop around much.
I took 5 pairs of footwear to Ireland. Two pairs of boots ($200 to $250 a pair) tennis shoes ($150) and 2 pairs of Birks ($120 a pair), so almost $1000 worth of shoes alone. $7k is totally doable.
