School comes under fire for 'humiliating' braless 17-year-old by telling her to put BAND-AIDS on her nipples because they were 'distracting her classmates'

  • Lizzy Martinez, 17, went to school without a bra on Monday and says school officials called her into the dean's office to talk to her about it
  • Martinez says the dean had her put a shirt on under her long sleeve shirt and asked her to walk around, but was not satisfied she was covered up enough
  • Dean sent her to the nurse's office who gave her band-aids to cover her nipples
  • The superintendent's office says the school could have handled the situation better but that students are expected to come to school dressed appropriately

A Florida high-school student who didn't wear a bra one day this week says school administrators told her to cover her nipples because they were distracting her classmates.

The Bradenton Herald reported Friday that 17-year-old Lizzy Martinez decided not to wear a bra under her gray long-sleeve shirt on Monday, and school officials in Bradenton felt she became a target of other students' stares. The school is on Florida's Gulf Coast.

Martinez says the humiliation began when School Dean Violeta Velazquez called her into the office. Martinez felt like she was being bullied by fellow students, but Velazquez said there was a distraction that needed to be addressed.

'She told me that I needed to put a shirt on under my long-sleeve shirt to try to tighten my breasts - to constrict them,' Martinez told the paper. 'And then she asked me to move around.'

Lizzy Martinez, 17, wore this to school and was brought into the dean's office who said her lack of a bra was a distraction

Here is a random pic for boys swim teams. Why is this OK? I am all for modesty but it needs to go both ways. And, I don't see why someone has to wear a bra all the time either. It's freaking uncomfortable!! lol

I gave up wearing a bra early on in high school. I've never once had anything said to me or felt uncomfortable with my choice. It was far better than being confined in a bra!

Wear a bra to school.

The bathing suits are a non issues. It's a bathing suit.

Some girls can get away with not wearing a bra. Others can not.

I was told I needed a bra at the front door of my school by my 4th grade teacher on a Friday. Monday, I wore a bra.

It's not rocket science.

You don't see Olympic swimmers wearing Bermuda shorts.

Have you seen competition swimsuits?

The swimmers on the school team are competitors.

Guess figure skaters need to wear different uniforms, too.

Wrestlers. Goodness, they need to put some clothes on.

Gymnasts should wear sweat pants.

Ballet is just about as close to porn as you can get while still dressed.

I don't see any nipples showing through her shirt. All I can see is that her left breast seems to be sagging more than the right.

I don't know that you can require a bra. So not sure the school can really force that. However, if that was my daughter, I tell her that yes, you are wearing a bra to school. Put on a sports bra if you don't like the regular ones. Oh well. Telling her to put bandaids on is pretty absurd but I don't think would be the Hill to Die On.

Is the principal going to also require boys to wear band aids to cover their nipples as well? After all, they have them too and generally are usually hard and protruding all the time versus women's.

I think the bigger question is why is this girl being singled out and discriminated against. It's clearly just about the nipples because we all know the band aids were not about support. So, if it's just about the nipples, what about those bras that don't disguise or hide hard nipples? What about the boys' nipples that are constantly exposed?

My hospital dress code requires bras and underpants. It's a shame we have to tell people they have to wear underpants. We had a male traveler scrub tech who refused to wear underpants. When he went in the men's locker room to change all the guys would clear out. He had no modesty and would just strip down.

Well, we wonder why kids can't learn. Everything is an "all about ME" or I am gonna SUE SUE SUE. So do really expect that administrators and teachers can focus? In some ways, yes they do over react to these kinds of things. I think many times they go over board policing prom dresses when really some of these things would not be a problem if they didn't turn them into a problem. On the other hand, every kid wants to do whatever they want to do and the ANGRY PARENTS are going to SUE if JR or Susie doesn't get her way.

Requiring students to respect the dress code is not inflicting on their rights, school is a place of learning and has rules as well as the work force.

I can think of so many more important causes to fight for then being bra less. I agree with southern Belle, this will be thrown out.

If you have ever been sued or falsely accused you get how you do not want that to happen. Costs a lot of money that won't be recouped. So people sue knowing that the falsely accused will pay up to get rid of it.

I hate wearing a bra. I used to fling that puppy off as soon as I got home until I had the boys. But I wear one. Or I wear a "shelf" cami which provides coverage and a tiny bit of support.
