A horrifying photo has shown what appears to be a woman treading water in dangerous swell after falling overboard while on a cruise ship.
A 47-year-old passenger from Brisbane fell over the railing on a week-long P&O cruise west of New Caledonia, in the South West Pacific, on Thursday.
The photo, shared to Twitter by another passenger, seems to show the woman moments before she was swallowed up by the mammoth waves.

Queensland police have opened an investigation into how the woman plunged to her death, with officers set to meet the ship when it arrives in Brisbane Sunday.
A crew member reportedly spotted the female passenger falling overboard but dismissed reports she had been vomiting over the side at the time of the incident.
The Pacific Dawn cruise was halted as crew members attempted to find the woman, but the search was unsuccessful and called off Friday.
Passengers said the ship gradually came to a halt and turned around to try and find the woman.

Early reports suggested the woman was suffering from sea sickness and had been vomiting over the side, but a representative for P&O said there was 'nothing to suggest anything of this kind'.
The captain told passengers the woman had not been found and the ship was heading back to Brisbane.
'It is with a very heavy heart that I need to let you know that we have been unable to locate our guest,' the ship's captain told his passengers.

Terrifying: One passenger posted an image on Twitter of a life ring floating in the water and said the situation was 'horrendous'
'We are still in the area of the incident, and the weather conditions with the swell three to four metres high, as you can see outside... the strong wind made our search extremely challenging.
'As a result we have now made the extremely difficult decision to continue our journey towards Brisbane.'
The woman had 'no chance of survival', 9 News reported.
I guess there are areas of the ship where it would be easy to fall out but I'm so short I would have to be climbing up and doing my best "Rose & Jack" impression with arms outstretched before I would be in danger of falling over the edge.
