Barbara Bush now on Comfort Care
Permalink

This lovely lady is nearing the end of her earthly life. Prayers for her and her family for a peaceful passing. šŸ˜¢

Ā

HOUSTON (AP) ā€” Former first lady Barbara Bush is in "failing health" and won't seek additional medical treatment, a Bush family spokesman said Sunday.

"Following a recent series of hospitalizations, and after consulting her family and doctors, Mrs. Bush, now age 92, has decided not to seek additional medical treatment and will instead focus on comfort care," spokesman Jim McGrath said in a news release.

McGrath did not elaborate as to the nature of Bush's health problems. She has been treated for decades for Graves' disease, which is a thyroid condition, had heart surgery in 2009 for a severe narrowing of her main heart valve and was hospitalized a year before that for surgery on a perforated ulcer.

"It will not surprise those who know her thatĀ Barbara Bush has been a rock in the face of her failing health, worrying not for herself ā€” thanks to her abiding faith ā€” but for others," McGrath said. "She is surrounded by a family she adores, and appreciates the many kind messages and especially the prayers she is receiving."

Bush, who is at home in Houston, is one of only two first ladies who was also the mother of a president. The other was Abigail Adams, wife of John Adams, the nation's second president, and mother of John Quincy Adams, the sixth president.

Bush married George H.W. Bush on Jan. 6, 1945. They had six children and have been married longer than any presidential couple in American history.

Eight years after she and her husband left the White House, Mrs. Bush stood with her husband as their son George W. was sworn in as the 43rd president.

President Donald Trump's press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, said in a statement Sunday evening that "the President's and first lady's prayers are with all of the Bush family during this time."

Bush is known for her white hair and her triple-strand fake pearl necklace.

Her brown hair began to gray in the 1950s, while her 3-year-old daughter Pauline, known to her family as Robin, underwent treatment for leukemia and eventually died in October 1953. She later said dyed hair didn't look good on her and credited the color to the public's perception of her as "everybody's grandmother."

Her pearls sparked a national fashion trend when she wore them to her husband's inauguration in 1989. The pearls became synonymous with Bush, who later said she selected them to hide the wrinkles in her neck. The candid admission only bolstered her common sense and down-to-earth public image.

Her 93-year-old husband, the nation's 41st president who served from 1989 to 1993, also has had health issues in recent years. In April 2017, he was hospitalized in Houston for two weeks for a mild case of pneumonia and chronic bronchitis. He was hospitalized months earlier, also for pneumonia. He has a form of Parkinson's disease and uses a motorized scooter or a wheelchair for mobility.

Before being president, he served as a congressman, CIA director and Ronald Reagan's vice president.

Barbara Pierce Bush was born June 8, 1925, in Rye, New York. Her father was the publisher of McCall's and Redbook magazines. She and George H.W. Bush married when she was 19 and while he was a young naval aviator. After World War II, the Bushes moved to Texas where he went into the oil business.

Along with her memoirs, she's the author of "C. Fred's Story" and "Millie's Book," based on the lives of her dogs. Proceeds from the books benefited adult and family literacy programs. The Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy began during her White House years with the goal of improving the lives of disadvantaged Americans by boosting literacy among parents and their children. The foundation partners with local programs and has awarded more than $40 million to create or expand more than 1,500 literacy programs nationwide.

What a great lady!

I have always loved, how strong, and sweet, she has been.

I hope her last days, are peaceful.

And full of family, and fun.

I think she would like that.

I read this also, sad but she was blessed with a wonderful life and perhaps she is just tired and ready to enjoy the time she has with her family. I also hope her passing is peaceful.

I am also a great fan of hers. Both Bush presidents seem to have married very terrific ladies. Barbara is something special, for sure.

I have not seen any reports of her passing, either....

CNN reported it last night. But, Trump does always accuse them of being fake news so maybe they jumped the gun.

The world of social media seems to holds its breath when icons like Betty White are trending, concerned for their wellbeing. On Sunday afternoon, a false alarm sounded for former first lady Barbara Bush, after an obituary for the 92-year-old was posted online by CBS.

The article was online for at least 17 minutes before being taken down, according to screenshots captured of the article by users on social media. The article had been a top story trending on Google News.

The headline read "DO NOT PUBLISH ā€“ former first lady Barbara Bush d*es at 92 DO NOT PUBLISH."

The story continues below the tweet.

The erroneous story was published following an announcement that the former first lady would no longer seek treatment for an unspecified life-threatening illness. Instead, she will receive "comfort care," according to a tweet from the Bushes' spokesperson, Jim McGrath.

Barbara Bush's health deteriorated along with her husband, George H. W. Bush, 93. Both were hospitalized simultaneously ā€” Mrs. Bush with "fatigue and coughing" ā€” in the days leading up to President Trump's inauguration last year and were unable to attend.

After the announcement, well wishes poured in on social media for the 92-year-old. However, some who had seen or shared the obviously premature obituary questioned why a story about her death would already have been drafted (and mistakenly published) by the news organization.

What happened?
The short answer is: It's common practice for news outlets to maintain running obituaries for public figures that are periodically updated. Major changes in a person's health signal a time to check the accuracy of the current draft.

If that person does die, having an already complete obituary helps to deliver the news as quickly as possible with as much information as is available.

As for what caused the error which led to the CBS story being published prematurely, it's anyone's guess. Obituaries published before the subject has actually died may be the result of anything from a hoax, to name confusion, to a brush with death which proved non-fatal. However, perhaps the most common are those published in error.

Not alone
Barbara Bush isn't the only famous person to be mistakenly "killed" by a mistimed obituary. See the gallery below for more famous people who were "killed" literally before their time.

In April 2018, Barbara Bush's obituary was erroneously published by CBS after reports the former first lady would seek "comfort care" instead of treatment for her illness. In 2012 George H. W. Bush was erroneously reported dead in an e-mail by WBAP-AM/WBAP-FM, due to a false tip. In 2009, George H. W. Bush or George W. Bush was reported deceased by a South African television station via ticket tape which read "George Bush is dead." The broadcast system was being tested, according to reports, and was made live in error. Archive photo/NorthJersey.com

I think the media keeps obits ready. Like they had one ready for Lindsay Lohen and Britney Spears when they were living hard and fast. So it's a common thing if they expect someone's demise. Which is kind of creepy but that is what they do.

A lot of people write their own obituary, too.

Fake news from CNN. What a shocker.

Ā The media has become too distant from how real journalism is supposed to be performed that the are constantly making mistakes and what is worse is they don't seem to care.

What a wonderful lady. Her and George, Sr. were married longer than the average life expectancy of men! Seventy-three years, WOW!

She's had a blessed life, and I'm sure when she goes, George Sr. will follow closely behind. Couples like that tend to die together.

I think I heard or read that they have been married longer than any US president.

That's pretty cool.

I saw a news report on the Washington Post, I somewhat don't believe their news but in this case I think the Bush family would have them contacted.

I was listening about her life on the news and till now losing her little girl to leukemia still brought tears to her eyes. It was while her child was sick her hair turned white and never would dye it.
