We lost power yesterday, and with all the phones in the house going off all night with flash flood warnings, I slept little and took yesterday off. Fortunately power was only gone for a few hours. I have a request out for an estimate for a generator.
Speaking of outages, during the last one which lasted several days, DH & I went to Home Depot and found some light bulbs that work for 6 hours without power. You have to charge them initially and then use them about 30 minutes every week to keep them charged, and they work in regular lamps. Anyway, I put them to the test yesterday during the outage and they worked great. I just went over and turned the lamps on and voila! Light!
It's sunny, here, but cold. Good news is, it's supposed to get warm later.

They were great. I thought they would turn on automatically, so I did not put one in our bedroom because I didn't want it waking us up. I have two on daily timers so I just had to override the timer and it came right on. The one in the family room I had to turn the lamp on.
I also found these things that look like light switches that you can hang on a nail anywhere that you flip on and they are very, very bright. I got mine at AC Moore for just a few dollars each. I put one in each of the boys' Easter baskets. I have one hanging in my closet and it provided enough light that I could get dressed.

We have those switches in every room.
Dad brings them home from work.
Love them.

Well, that was a fast 5 days. Got our taxes done, found new doctors for DH and I, had some quality time with grandma, did some random errands, and accompanied our friend G on his errands for getting everything taken care of for his accident and getting a new car. His car was totaled but wasn't his fault. Other guy ran the red and t-boned him.
DS is at grandma's this week helping her out with stuff around the house. I'm enjoying the quiet. Love the kid but he's been rather belligerent and outright rude lately so not missing the attitude. This 4nado business is not for the faint of heart.
Good afternoon everyone! Hope you feel better soon Trudy! Chef, sounds like your ds is testing his independence he'll figure it out. I too have told my daughter that I hope her kids are just like her, it's worse, they are like me buhaha!!!
Beautiful here today, watched grandson for a hour so my dil can get her nails done, doing laundry and walked about two miles. I believe I will sit in my hot tub later.
is it Friday yet? Extremely busy at work, over the top busy. I need to rest my brain. Baking burgers in the oven now and put a load of wash in. I need down time!
Chef, DS is normal. All stages are tough but 4YO stage is better than a teen!

Ahoy there! BEAUTIFUL day on the island. Not a cloud in the sky, about 20 people on two miles of beach. And G caught a SHARK! He was only about 2 feet long, but everyone wanted a picture with it...lol! Leave it to G to be the most popular person on the island...

Oh, I so hope he has a kid just like him. One that tests every possible limit he or she can find and is just as stubborn.
It's kind of weird, I don't make him do a lot because I know he'll do whatever I ask without complaining. Including toilets and what not.
So yesterday out of the blue he offers to learn to do the dishes. I said sure! He did all the dishes and then very sweetly asked if he could start doing more chores and get an allowance.
His dad doesn't want to give him one because HE didn't get one, well neither did I but I sure did want one growing up! So I offered to pay out of my own pocket.

So he deserves it, he is being ambitious. Give him an allowance for regular chores, maybe $10 a week. Then let him know that heavier, more manual labor you will pay him by the job. BUT I would also tell him that if his phone service etc is being paid for by you and Dad that the cost comes out of the allowance and other earnings.

I think if the boy is showing initiative and looking for more responsibility, then he should earn something. It's rare for kids today to look / ask for more. Kudos to him!!! I don't know how old he is but I think the $10 IKWTDS said is fair to start with.
No allowances in this household. They are expected to help out around the house. I call it pulling your own weight.
Now if they want something they can ask for it for Christmas or birthday, or spend the money they receive here and there (Easter baskets, birthday gift cards, etc.). And if they receive cash, whether it be coins in a plastic Easter egg or some money grandma slips them, the know they must save some of it and not spend it all.
