So, the Lt. Gov. has tasked a State legislative committee to determine whether a law should be passed requiring all Georgia schools to start after Labor Day. It all comes down to money. He thinks that shorter and shorter summers are hurting the tourism industry. Duh. There's also the thought that so many breaks in the middle interrupt the teaching too much - it's nice they are at least giving a courtesy nod to an education reason. Michigan passed that law a long time ago purely for economic reasons.
I would much rather we were more aligned with the rest of the country, and have longer summers and less random days off.

We start the week before Labor Day and end mid June. WIth random days off. I would prefer no random days, no early dismissal, and end school year earlier. But I don't get a say.
Our Governor has introduced legislation for the same reason. Sometimes our town starts after Labor day, sometimes before. It's dependent on the Teacher's Union contract.

I remember when I was in school we wouldn’t start school till the week after Labor Day till the 2nd week of June. Always had 12 weeks off. Now live in the Midwest where schools start the 2nd week of August (3rd wk when my kids were in school, to the 3rd week of May. It seems that vacations are getting shorter, plus summer schools. Kids don’t have much down time.
Working parents complain and pressure the school districts into extending school year so they don't have to pay for camps. At least that's what I have heard. I know they extended kindergarten from half day to full day for that very reason.

I find it more annoying to have to find childcare for random weeks and days. The summer - there are options galore from cheap church camps to sleepaway camps and more.

We send ours to "Granny camp" (my parents' house) on those random days, but still....I agree with you, it's a PIA. I'd rather they have a longer summer!

If the public school year is not aligned with the College year then it does not good to extend the public school year. Most Camps are staffed by public school teachers and college kids.

When I lived in NC one year the start of school was delayed in some counties. It had been a late harvest for the tobacco crops and the kids were needed to work the fields.

When I was growing up that is what the school year was scheduled around.

I liked getting out in May, but not going back the first week of August.
I liked the week lon breaks during the year.
Still don't see the point of early dismissal.

We start mid week before Labor day weekend and end the Friday before Memorial day weekend.
I would love to end the school year two weeks later and have have two week long breaks added in the fall and spring in order to take off season vacations and break up the school year a bit more.
I think almost three months of summer break is excessive.
It's not the week long breaks I'm referencing. I enjoy those. It's the one day here and one day there they close for "teacher work days." For instance, there are two in early November (not counting the Thanksgiving holidays) for "school planning and teacher work days", one towards the end of January, one in early February (not counting President's Day holiday), one in early April (not counting the week for Spring Break), and another in June. Then there are "early release" days where they end school 3 hours early. There is one in a couple weeks, one mid December, one in mid January, early March, and of course, the last day of school in June.
