Looks like the governor's office is getting involved.
I think every male, facility worker, family, visitors, every one, should be required to take a DNA test.

What I don't understand is how the staff missed that she was pregnant. Really? Are they (staff) that stupid?
I am appalled by the staff neglect and yes, I consider this staff neglect.
Been following the story since it first appeared. Breaks my heart.
Yeah, I do not get how the staff missed that. But this is a rehab hospital I think? The staff may have ignored. Staff at some of these facilities are not like nurses.

I'm not completely giving the immediate family a pass, either, if they are visiting at least once a month, shouldn't they have questioned the change in her body?
And, if the culprit is not found out in the staff, the male family members need eliminated, too.
This makes you wonder about how much this happens, this kind of rape.
I hope they test the mother and baby for all STD.

Like I said on the other board, I hope they take away any and all rights he may have, force him to sell everything and give it to the family for the baby.
I hope he gets the maximum sentence.
And once out, make sure he pays child support.
I'm surprised that male nurses are allowed to attend female patiences alone, bet that changes now.

Lily, I would bet that he worked the night shift. Less staff, no visitors and a lot less supervision. Night shift is always (in general) short staffed.
When I worked as a charge nurse at a facility, we had a CNA who stole money from residents during the night shift. She got caught because our DON planted a burst bag in the residents billfold. The red dye on her hands was all the evidence needed to get her prosecuted and fired.
Sadly, when you are short staffed, things like this happen. Not everyone hired is honest. All you can do is hope they are.

I hope that it doesn’t change. First off, you are making the assumption that all male nurses are perverts. Second, if a male nurse must have a female present when attending a female patient, then facilities will hire fewer male nurses rather than having a male and a female nurse to attend to the females. Third, what’s good for the goose is good for the gander. No more female nurses caring for male patient. I realize that a male cannot become pregnant, but he could still be sexually abused by a female nurse.

For that matter, a female nurse could abuse a female patient. Couldn't get her pregnant, but could do anything she wanted. And a male nurse could abuse a male patient.
I agree, you can't assume everyone is bad because 1 person is bad.

It's about the facility avoiding things like this.
Most medical facilities, homes, offices, all of them, have rules against male medical persons, regardless of their degree, are not allowed alone with female patients.
I think nursing teams would be a good idea. Partner them off, and switch them up regularly.
I agree, it's a sad thing that one bad apple can cause suspicions on the whole bunch, but male or female, this facility had so many failures in this one woman's care, changes need to be made.

My doctor is alone with me all the time. He only calls a nurse in during the actual exam - and that's just a CYA, not a requirement. Until that point and after, we are alone.

And if it was a rule, this woman probably would not have been raped.
And millions wouldn't be wrongly accused, either.
This ain't Mayberry anymore.
Men and women, both, need to protect themselves.

Who is going to pay to double the staffing? Nursing homes are notiriously understaffed. It is often a depressing place to work and not a lot of people wish to wipe rear ends for minimum wage anymore. That's a reality.
I know it is expensive, but I know the better ones do.
I don't have all the answers.
All I'm saying, I bet this one instance Wil bring about changes to protect the facility.

The most caring and compassionate nurse my mom had when she was dying was a male nurse. Maybe for comatose patiants a camera in the room.
My friend (Gay male) is a nurse. He works with the elderly. Nothing was sweeter than the day he opened up a box and there it was.....makeup, brushes, hair curler, bobby pins, etc. If they told him family was coming he'd spruce them right up. The families loved him!
And how many times has an innocent man had his life ruined by accusations?
It isn't about protecting one sex above the other.
It isn't about making everyone the bad guy.
We live in a different world.
And, believe me, facilities will do what they can to avoid potential law suits.

But practically speaking, you just can't protect in all situations. Having 2 nurses available at all times for all patients will be too expensive, and is, quite frankly, discriminatory against men. Just like you can't protect men from false accusations in any event - anyone can accuse someone, truthfully or not, at any time. Otherwise, we go back to the dark ages where all women are chaperoned at all times. Ridiculous.

The failure of everyone involved, the facility and the family, has caused this.

I do think that for any patient who is in a vegetative state, and since they can't speak for themselves it would be good to have a live security camera like they do in grocery stores.
The failure of everyone involved, the facility and the family, has caused this.
Seriously? All men chaperoned at all times? Talk about violation of rights and discrimination against men.
Wow. You are bound and determined to oppose anything I say.
I'm not Trump and you are not a democrat.
My point as I have stated, is not to make everyone the bad guy, it's about protection.
Facilities protecting themselves from lawsuits.
Men protecting themselves from false accusations.
Women protecting themselves from compromising positions.
Self preservation for everyone!
Changes will be made.
Changes need to be made.
This ain't Mayberry.
Now, let's see how fast you can snap that head around.
Careful, though, you may get a catch in your neck.

Something.

Changes won't be made. This was extremely isolated. In my facility ,and others I'm sure, one can request no male nurses. BUT, since this was a long term care facility I'm betting nursing staff was limited.
What needs to change is what these places pay and their nurse to patient ratio. No one wants to work at these places. That's why they get bottom of the barrel staff a lot of the time.
Nothing much will change. In reality society doesn't want to spend a lot of money on warehoused human beings. That is the sad reality. Male nurses are trained to take care of male and female patients just like female nurses are. BTW, i believe he was an LPN, not an RN. LPNs have about a year of training and that's it. However, whoever does the hiring is the one who needs to proper screening, drug testing, background checks, etc. But, to do that kind of work is draning. There aren't a lot of people lining up to wipe people's rear ends anymore. Nursing care used to be highly respected. Now, most everyone is "too good" for that sort of thing. You can flip burgers and make just as much money as you can do intimate , messy, and hard care on human beings.
I had a wonderful LPN when I was in the hospital. She was...well let's say if I were in a street fight I'd want her on my side. Anyway the stuff she had to do was gross but she just smiled and said not to worry, she'd take care of things, and made me feel at ease during a humiliating situation. (The cardiac ICU staff failed to give me a sanitary pad after the birth of my boys). She also scored me a wheelchair which weren't easy to come by at the time. I think she stole it from another patient's room. The woman was a gem. I hope she goes far in life.
Re male nurses - This thread reminded me of when my grandma needed a catheter placed and there wasn't a female nurse available. Grandma was out of it (mini-stroke) and wouldn't have cared anyway (she prefers male doctors for everything, including OBGYN stuff) but the male nurse that came in asked me if I could assist for CYA purposes. I understood but found it sad he'd have to do such a thing.
