Officials in Venice have pledged to continue their crackdown on anti-social behaviour after dishing out 100 fines and exclusion orders in just eight weeks.
Since the bans were introduced on June 19th, those fined have included a Canadian woman sunbathing in a bikini and a man who slept in the flowerbed of a central park.
Three French men who bolted their bikes to railings and a woman from Belarus who jumped into a fountain have also been on the receiving end of police action.
Fines are usually around £300 plus another £80 for the issue of the exclusion order which is known as a Daspo.
However some tourists, including a German couple who made coffee under the Rialto Bridge, have seen fines of around £800.
Officials in Venice have said they will continue to crack down on anti-social behaviour after handing out 100 fines and bans in two months. A German couple, pictured, were given a fine of around £800 after they made coffee under the Rialto Bridge+6
Many tourists and Twitter users have slammed the new rules as 'ridiculous', 'draconian' and 'unfair' and say they do not show Venice in a very good light.
Some have even threatened to boycott Italy and find somewhere to go on holiday which is more tolerant.
Venice council, however, is unrepentant. Mayor, Luigi Brugnaro said: 'Venice must be respected.
Fines are usually around £300 plus £80 for the issue of the exclusion order, called a Daspo. Pictured are police in the Italian city+6
'Those rude people who think they come to the city and can do what they want must understand that, thanks to the local police, they will be taken, sanctioned and removed.'
He also revealed that from now on the names of any tourist given a Daspo will be sent to the embassies and consulates of their countries of origin.
'Our city will always be open and welcoming to all those who want to come and visit it, at the same time we will be intransigent with those who think they will come and do what they want, ' he warned.
The new legislation allows the police to fine tourists or local people for a raft of anti-social behaviour and issue them with an order to stay away from the centre of Venice.
The fines are usually around £300, plus another £80 for the issue of the Daspo. The time duration for the bans can range between two days and two years.
The 100 fines and bans under the new Police and Urban Safety Regulations included a penalty of around £800 for a German couple, aged 32 and 35, from Berlin who lit up a campstove at the foot of the Rialto Bridge to make their own coffee. They were escorted to a police station and given a removal order, as well as the fine.
Sounds like they expect people to behave in their town.

I think this is a great idea (specifically within reason). People are entitled *******s who ruin the experience for anyone else. And Venice isn't the theme park that tourists seem to think it is. It's a functioning city that is being desecrated by tourists and damage is being done to ancient structures. I also think that other places who have seen tourist-related damages should consider this as well. (That said, 800L fines is steep).
When traveling to a foreign country, I will do extensive research on their customs and cultures so I know what is acceptable/unacceptable before I arrive. Just keep your shoulders and legs covered before entering a church in Italy, and don't stick your chopsticks into a bowl of rice and leave them in Japan!

I think one can and should research, but people do make innocent mistakes as well.
I’m just glad the list didn’t include Americans since we are considered rude.
LOL, maybe it's not a complete list! Just wondering though, why are Americans expected to go to their countries and follow all of their customs or it's "rude" but they come over and aren' t expected to do everything they way we do it?

Yeah its ok not researching our ways and customs, but heaven forbid that a American does it. We were never treated rudely or rebuked for being Americans when we traveled over seas, the only ones who I've seen complaining about us is other Americans on travel message boards
I think that the US & Canada do have similar rules in place. It's not about customs with this Venice's law, it's about boorish and rude behaviour. We issue fines for bad parking, for causing a disturbance on public transit, causing a disturbance in general, public intoxication, peeing on a building, sex in certain places ... etc etc.
Wouldn't these laws be the same, no matter the person? I mean, wouldn't a resident of Venice get the same fines?
I'm thinking yes.

Perhaps because rudeness is fluid? I definitely think that if people are defacing things like the Colosseum they need to be fined. Heavily. Perhaps legal intervention.
Maybe it wasn't just 'making coffee'. Maybe they were squatting. Those backpackers who panhandle their way around the world. 'Begpackers'?
That's what I said.
Well, it would seem I spoke independently of you!
