Issues at church

I love going to church. However, it seems like there are so many distractions these days.

People talking, visiting during service. Kids, older kids around 7 and 10 playing with toys, or on phones. Adults texting, and on Facebook, and even taking selfies during service.

I don't understand the lack of respect for the Lord's house.

I've moved to other pews, I've forced myself to pay attention to the worship and preaching. I pray, asking God to help me not be a distraction.

Do you see more of this in your churches than you used to?

Is it just my church?

Not to many, if we do mostly from visitors who don’t go to Church but are there for a baptism of a family member. I would address this with your pastor.

Never in all my years did I ever
think I would wear PANTS to
church, but every once in a
while I'll put on a pants suit.
The problem I have is with
people who should know better
wearing slouchy jeans (with the
underwear hanging out) with
holes all over the place.

Come on, people, we're in the
Lord's house. Let's show some
respect.

On the other hand, I'm just
glad that they are here. And
maybe those are the only
clothes they have.

I agree with Momala that it is good that people are there, even if they do not seem respectful. Hopefully something will rub off on them.
But I think this is a bigger problem than Church - it seems no one respects anyone these days - God, Ministers, teachers, elders, parents, etc. Just all on a kind of do my own thing roll. I wonder what society will be like 10 or 20 years down the road.....

This is sooooo true. It isn't just in church, it's a societal problem / issue.

But, I'm always happy to see the church full even if people are not dressed "properly". I really don't think God cares what we're wearing as long as we're there in worship.

I would speak to the pastor and perhaps he can institute a policy or ask the congregation to please turn off cells and leave toys at home. He could encourage parents to "discipline" their kids while in the Lord's house.

People are very casual now. I think the days of people being solemn and reverant are over. Adults can't stop playing with their phones so no wonder kids can't. And, bringing toys and coloring books, etc. Whatever happened to teaching children to learn to sit quietly for an hour? That has gone by the wayside. They must be entertained now at all times.

Denim or pants are the only thing I can wear to church.  I haven't owned a skirt or dress in over 10 years - except for 1 wedding - and don't see myself buying one anytime soon.  And if I did, it would be the same skirt every week!

I will wear dresses the majority of the time unless I have nursery, children Church or nasty weather.

I don't see disrespectful behavior in church too much. Once in awhile I see a toddler eating a snack, presumably the parent is trying to keep them quiet with food, but that's about it. The attire depends on which Mass I go to. Usually Sunday mornings are more formal, and evening Masses are more casual.

I used to get hung up on what people wore, I was raised in a church where women wore dresses, men wore suits. Sunday best was a real thing. However, as I've become mobility challenged, I wear pants most of the time. I'm affraid I'll flash someone getting up or down.

And, God really dealt with me about that. God wants us as we are, we don't have to put on airs. He knows our hearts.

I'm really having a hard time with the lack of reverence in the church. It isn't just kids. Adults are terrible at being respectful, not causing a distraction.

I can understand lily, when my kids in Sunday School act silly during Prayer time I always let them know that not only are they disrespecting me, they are disrespecting God, these are kids, they are learning though.

I remember, in my youth, looking
forward to Easter and Christmas,
when I could wear my newest
dresses, and first stockings!
That meant that I was grown
up, and had to act accordingly.
It also meant that I could be
in the adult congregation for
the entire service. When my
parents discovered that I was
very good at singing the hymns,
it cemented my place in the
congregation.

I am extraordinarily pleased
that my DH acknowledges my
"strict" attire preferences, and
tucks his shirt into his pants
before he enters God's house,
as the rest of the time it is out
of the waistband.

I guess this is another one of
the ways he shows how much
he loves me. KEEPER ! ! !

My concern is that there is nobody to teach them.  Often, their parents haven't learned.

Our Church has a bus ministry, we pick children up so they can attend Sunday School and Children Church, during summer we have the children sit out in regular Church oe reason to teach them how to behave and another to make sure they know that they are apart of the Church, they actually do a great job sitting in regular Church.

That is very cool. I actually woke up this morning with fears for the next (current?) generation. Will they even have to learn to spell?

They didn't teach them spelling in public school....didn't care if they misspelled words. They said that's what spellcheck is for and learning to spell was no longer necessary.

This is what I was worrying about - it's like English spelling is going the way of Latin or Aramaic.  They'll find writing on something a thousand years from now and be thoroughly confused about handwriting and spelling.

The teachers and staff here are not allowed to tell a student no, or be restrained if they get out of hand, if a student loses it and start throwing chairs or books they can’t stop them, but have to take all the kids out, at least here... one reason why homeschool is gaining popularity.

So glad my kids don't have to go to public school. If I had kids ... they'd be in private. Kid is throwing chairs? Kick them out. Sorry. They need a specialized program to work on impulse control, etc. Often this behaviour is trauma-based, but that needs to be addressed first.

Parents need to be parents again.

I got my butt lit at home if I got in trouble at school.

There was no two ways about it.

I agree lily, It isn’t the school’s job to parent the children, it’s the parents responsiblilty and those who don’t should be held accountable.

I can't figure out a useful way to hold them accountable, however, that doesn't impact the child more.
