Made it through half of 2023!

Anyone have plans for the 4th?

We're going to do fireworks and pizza at grandma's. I still call it grandma's even though she's gone. Just the way it is.

Going swimming tomorrow. Can't wait. I'm allergic to sunscreen so I'm sure I'll be nursing a burn for the next week or so.

Good morning/afternoon! Happy 4th to all the geeks. It has been extremely hot and humid and over a 100 degrees here plus a drought, rained all around us but for whatever reason it skips our area. Going to brother in laws for a 4th of July party, but unfortunately due to the drought and grass being so dry we will not be having fireworks tonight, was planning on going to son and dil’ on the fourth but we moved it till Friday hopefully it would rain by then and it’s supposed to be a little cooler.

6 of my neighbors are all
going to tune in to the same
radio station, and turn the
volume up to full blast, out
on their porches. Hopefully,
the music will drown out the
thunder of the fireworks,
and the animals won't be
so disturbed by that noise.

Good morning all! We will be having a BBQ and pool party for the boys and my parents. Then we will all congregate on the streets where the neighbors are putting on a fireworks show. I guess animals aren't a problem in our hood, as we have never heard of complaints. We do have basements, so maybe that's where the pets go.

I remember going to my uncle’s as a kid on the 4th of July and shooting off the most awesome fireworks I’ve ever seen that wasn’t professionally done, I grew up in Orange County, Ca. and what we were able to buy was sad compared to what you would find in Texas, my uncle had five or six blood hounds and those dogs loved it, my cousins would take them back to the house and they escaped into the woods to come back to where we were, no way were they going to miss out on that..

Happy 4th y'all!

When I had a dog, he enjoyed sitting and watching the fireworks with us. We had to make sure the doors and windows were kept shut so the smoke from the fireworks wouldn't kill our birds though.

Looking forward to the fireworks tonight. We're doing our usual thing of going to grandma's for fireworks and food. It'll always be grandma's house to me even though she's gone. One of our friends is picking up DS in a few hours to take him to the Crayola Experience. Our friend is a kid at heart and doesn't have kids so he does all the 'gotta-have-a-kid-to-get-in' stuff with DS. DS definitely doesn't mind the outings!

DS got 2 more weeks of summer and he is thrilled. He wanted to switch schools so we transferred him to a school closer to home. He was in a school with an advanced, fast-paced curriculum and he was thriving for awhile but really struggled last year. He said the pace was too much for him so I asked if he wanted to go to another school and he said yes. So, we did. I'm thrilled to be going from a 40 minute, 30 mile commute to a 5 minute, 3 mile commute.

Love a shorter commute! The boys' school is about 20 minute away. Far cry from the 6 minute commute of middle school.

LOL I was higher than a kite on the fourth. I got cleared to walk on my leg and the next day I had experimental nose surgery. Several years ago when I fell I damaged my septum. It dissolved and I was left with a big hole in my nose. My ENT went to a conference about repairing these things and called me up and wanted me to be the guinea pig for him. I said yes. They took skin grafts from the inside of my nose and made me a new septum. Right now I have plastic covering it to help it heal. In three weeks the plastic comes off and we'll know if it's successful. I'm not sure what they gave me before surgery but when I came home I was making some questionable choices. Now let me say I don't remember any of this but apparently I lost permission to use my phone when I tried to order 100 Starbucks drinks through Uber. When my leg was broken I had a caregiver to come in and do light housework. She said she would check on me after surgery. She took one look at me and told my son, "I'll stay with her till you get home from work." They let me call my husband and he said, "What in the sam hill did you do to her?" My son was like, "This is how we got her back!" So basically I don't remember three days of my like which SVCKS more than you will ever know because I was too high to go see my new grandson being born. She was in labor an hour and out came Luke William. 8 lbs 5oz and 22 inches long. He's the best baby. Sleeps all the time and never cries. And so beautiful. He's the most beautiful baby in the world. Do I sound like a grandma? And that is my life.

Well, the music seems to have
worked ! None of our neighbors
lost any animals this year.

We'll have to try it again for
New Year's.

Happy it worked out for you and your pets, missed out on fireworks this year, my area hadn’t had rain for over a month and it was so hot, my family and friends agreed it was to hazardous to shoot off fireworks:(

Thanks you and chef for the congrats on the new grandson.  He is the most beautiful baby in the entire world.  He has big chubby cheeks and a headful of hair!

Lindley, growing up I used to pretend to be LIW.  So much so that my mom sewed me a little bonnet and  wore it all the time..

You would enjoy seeing her home in Mansfield, you could actually go to the graveyard to see their graves, my grand girls left a penny on their head stones. I didnt realize till I visited the first time how close I lived to Mansfield.  we visited the museum and saw many items from her childhood including pa,s fiddle. after Laura died her daughter rose left the house exactly the way it was when she died, same. Practically everything was left where she left it, obviously I’m sure moved to clean, but it was all hers.

 Why the penny?

In one of her books mr. Edwards brought the girls a tin cup, candy cane and a penny for Christmas, up until then Mary and Laura had to share a cup, had my grandkids with me and at the gift shop they had tin cups with a candy cane and penny so I bought each grandchild one and when we visited their grave site we saw all these pennies on their gravestone. My grandkids each added their penny. I’m assuming that is why, I’ve heard other reasons but I don’t recall what they were.

Ah. I wasn't into the books and had no idea. I want to say my mom watched the show based on them but I could be thinking of something else. Little House on the Prairie - is that it?

Yes, the t.v. Series is based on her books, but Isn’t a documentary as Mary never married in real life but she did in the series.
