Time shares?

I'm finally able to have some fun with my money and am considering buying a time share. Does anyone own one or have a lot of knowledge on time shares? I was thinking somewhere in central FL. East or west coast. No big resort areas like Disney.

We've owned two.

They have good and bad points.

First of all--don't buy from the resort. There are a lot of resellers out there--or even ebay--where you can get a timeshare and save a ton of $$.

Second--it doesn't make that much difference where you get it unless you want to go back to the same place every year--just make sure you get one that trades well. Ours is in Cabo--and that will get you anywhere, anytime. In fact, if you are serious, I'd take a trip to Cabo and buy one there--or get one in Cabo off of ebay or another reseller. Century 21 even has timeshare listings.

Third--to make it pay, you have to commit to using it every year. That's been our problem. It seems like a lot of the time we can't take that week, so we bank it, but even then it's hard to use, sometimes. Make SURE you can commit to vacationing.

Most timeshares are REALLY NICE!!! That is one of their selling points. The nicest hotels aren't half as nice as a good timeshare resort unless you spring for a suite--and then you'll be paying as much as buying a timeshare.

Just remember that they are really overpriced if you buy them from the resort.

Well, I could agree with you--but then we'd both be wrong.

Oh, and if you do get hooked into buying one from the resort, you should be able to get them down to at least 1/2 of their original offer. If they say $30,000, walk away unless you can get it to $15,000 or so--and that better be a damn nice one.

In Florida, the Westgate resorts are VERY nice.

We own Marriott.

Yes, it's pricey, but you get what you pay for. Also, we can give the property to our kids, and they will only be responsible for the annual maintenance fees.

We own in West Palm Beach & Kauai. We sold our units in Orlando & Panama City.

I like the flexibility: we've gone to Marriotts in Hilton Head, St. Kitts, Aruba, Lake Tahoe...

And you get a full kitchen (which helps with expenses) and a washer/drier.

Marriott sounds good. I definitely want to go with a little luxury. My sister has one in Ft. Meyers but hers is more rustic and is tiny. Now I just have to decide where.

They have changed their program from when we first bought. Now, instead of being owners at a specific resort, you buy shares (that may not be the right term).

But you now have the flexibility to go on cruises, or stay for 10 days, instead of 7.

Why not Disney?  They have thousands of properties and a resort in Hawaii.

I don't want Orlando. I can stay there with friends for free and I hate the crowds. If I had young children that might be an option. I looked on a Marriot website where people sell their timeshares and saw some in the Palm Beach area for $10,000.

West Palm Beach is AMAZING. We have been to Panama City, Orlando, and Fort Lauderdale.

Sigh, so my sister is staying in Ft. Meyers in Oct. I wanted to go to the same time share as her and that's the only week until the end of the year that doesn't have anything available to rent. I did find a nice hotel a few blocks down so we will still have a good time and hopefully not run into the ex husband. Will NOT be buying a tie share there!
