To the People Who Don't Drink Coffee: How Do You Live?*

*Masquerading as a question for the people that don't drink it, is an ode to the beverage many of us would never want to live without.

Seriously though, how do you live? Since International Coffee Day is upon us, I thought I'd ask. The question comes from an honest place; merely a product of curiosity, not self-righteousness or arrogance. Not aimed at ridicule or boastfulness; a question birthed from anthropological wonder, if you will. I'm directing the question to you, the brave humans who are capable of turning down the most sensual of gifts, in whichever vessel presented to you, by saying some variation of: 'No thanks, I don't drink coffee.'

My curiosity for your lack of coffee-drinking habits doesn't come from an exclusive consumption of gourmet brews, those whose choreographed preparations alone could inspire sonnets. It isn't fueled by the wanderlust caused by reading about some of the faraway latitudes where red-blood coffee grains are grown; or by the self-righteousness that purchasing a drink that supports the creation of 14 million jobs in Latin America and the Caribbean could bring. The purpose of the question isn't to advocate for the health benefits that a daily humble cup of joe selflessly provides, or to evangelize and convert caffeine-skeptics.

And I'm no coffee snob. I snort loudly at self-denominated snobs of any kind -- it's a label people adopt not to signal their love of something but their feeling of superiority towards everything. It's because of that that I'm not above defending the intrinsic virtues of really bad coffee: what, but shared disgust for the brownish hot water some office managers try to pass off as java could bring disgruntled employees together as effectively in soulless office pantries? What would the victims of industrial coffee-makers unite against in college campuses?

I'm asking how you live, while acknowledging that the question only serves as an umbrella for a much longer interrogatory; a mere placeholder for all the queries I actually have: what scents dance around your kitchen when, in order to jump-start your day, you have to borrow some willpower? What do you pair your waits with? How do you buy some time before having to answer a hard question? To what handle, if it isn't that provided by a cup, do you hold on for dear life when battling loneliness at train stations, waiting rooms or office buildings? What adds legitimacy to the breaks you take at work to unplug your brain? How do you shorten funerals or stretch interesting conversations? What anchors your feet back down to reality after a nocturnal euphoria-propelled flight? What do you use to marinate thoughts that, after cooked with the right company, will become great conversations?

What do you use as bait to fool strangers into getting to know you better? What injects you with the necessary courage to face a blank page at 3 a.m.? At restaurants, how do you navigate in the uncomfortable limbo between a fantastic meal and the check? Every morning, what helps you digest the news and/or your morning toast? What do you spill on the pages of your favorite books, those boasting broken spines as evidence of your incessant reading? What was the taste in your mouth after writing the last word on that dissertation, thesis or paper? What had to swirl around your palate several times before you experienced that acquired taste is not a myth? What do you use as a metaphor when you try to rationalize heartbreaks by reminding yourself that there's a little bitterness in life's most sublime things?

If your response simply is 'tea', then I guess I have to ask all over again

In regards to stimulants, I get my caffeine from pills.  I used to have great results with No-Doz (one 200 mg tablet was the equivalent of 1 cup of coffee), which was pulled from the market awhile back and apparently will not be coming back.  I currently take Awake, which is the Walgreen's brand of No-Doz.  It does not seem to work as well as the original, but will keep me awake enough.

I try to avoid ingesting a lot of caffeine, though, as I have regular episodes of atrial fibrillation and supraventricular tachycardia, which can be exacerbated by the use of stimulants.

Otherwise, I do like Mountain Dew, Pepsi, and iced black teas (Earl Grey is my favourite).

I never developed a taste for coffee, and the smell of it does nothing for me either.

I don't drink coffee. So here goes:

what scents dance around your kitchen when, in order to jump-start your day, you have to borrow some willpower? The smell of breakfast. Fresh air from my kitchen windows. Sometimes I just have to manufacture willpower all by myself.

What do you pair your waits with? My phone, my kids, a book.

How do you buy some time before having to answer a hard question? I don't have a problem just pausing, but if I had to have an excuse I suppose I would take a drink of water.

To what handle, if it isn't that provided by a cup, do you hold on for dear life when battling loneliness at train stations, waiting rooms or office buildings? I guess I'm ok just being by myself. Really, does coffee make you less lonely??

What adds legitimacy to the breaks you take at work to unplug your brain? I never noticed that I had to have a reason to take a break.

How do you shorten funerals or stretch interesting conversations? Seriously??

What anchors your feet back down to reality after a nocturnal euphoria-propelled flight? Why do you have to come back to reality. Enjoy it.

What do you use to marinate thoughts that, after cooked with the right company, will become great conversations? I never realised what a crutch coffee is.

What do you use as bait to fool strangers into getting to know you better? My pleasant personality :)

What injects you with the necessary courage to face a blank page at 3 a.m.? Motivation. Determination.

At restaurants, how do you navigate in the uncomfortable limbo between a fantastic meal and the check? With conversation.

Every morning, what helps you digest the news and/or your morning toast? Usually these message boards ,lol.

What do you spill on the pages of your favorite books, those boasting broken spines as evidence of your incessant reading? Cookie crumbs

What was the taste in your mouth after writing the last word on that dissertation, thesis or paper? Do you have to have a taste?

What had to swirl around your palate several times before you experienced that acquired taste is not a myth? Wine.

What do you use as a metaphor when you try to rationalize heartbreaks by reminding yourself that there's a little bitterness in life's most sublime things? I've never heard that metaphor before.

Really. I'm starting to be grateful I never got addicted to coffee. A smoker could ask these same question about how people get by without cigarettes.

NAOW - I wish this board had a like button!

I drink coffee occasionally but really prefer tea. I do like some of Starbuck's froo-froo coffee drinks.

NAOW: I wish I could "like" that! Awesome!

I drink coffee when I want a hot beverage and there is no other hot beverage available. I like it but I don't need it.

I didn't really drink it until a few years ago. Before that I just drank a soda in the morning. I usually just have one cup a day.

I love your answers, NAOW.
I drink coffee heavily in the morning and that's it for the day. I do not drink soda at all, so coffee is my only truly loved drink.
My DH knows not to bother me before I've had my first cup of the morning. Yeah, I'm that kind of grump until I warm my tummy. wink

Thanks :)

Czech, that is how my step mom is. She said if we ever had to wake her for any reason we better come with coffee in hand, lol.

I take caffeine pills too renegade! Although I'm down from one to two a day to a couple times a week so that's good.

I don't like the taste of coffee. I am addicted to Starbucks Chai lattes. But on a daily basis, nothing says good morning like cracking open a can of Coke. I have one in the car on my way to work, one with lunch, and one after dinner. I am addicted and I know it. It's my one vice and I have no intentions of giving it up.

I don't really drink coffee. Yes I will enjoy a cup now and then but really it is about once or twice a year. It usually makes me pee too much.

I like my caffeine carbonated.

Don't mess with my coca-cola.

I haven't bought soda in several years. Maybe a litre of root beer for Mr VoR every 6 months. We both LOVE our morning coffee. Some of it is ritualistic, some of it is taste, a lot of it is caffeine. I drink it all day. Mr VoR drinks it in the morning.

I just don't know what I would replace it with. I don't like cold drinks. I drink warm or room temp water too.

Coffee is like the morning transfusion of life to arouse you from your slumber. I literally go nowhere without brewing a quick cup of coffee and putting it in my travel mug. Just sipping coffee is a very soothing thing.

I just have a Keurig. It's perfect for my one cup a day habit. I buy the iced tea k-cups during the summer. They are yummy.

I'm not a hardcore coffee drinker so the Keurig is fine. You either love it or hate it.

I didn't know how to make regular coffee and my parents were visiting and the ex was not home when it was coffee time so I did my best. They were drinking it when ex got back and he poured a cup and asked how many scoops I used. Apparently I used about double the amount needed. Parents drink it black so they didn't even have anything to cut it with. They were too nice to say anything.
