Anyone have one? Anyone have any recommendations? My son is gluten intolerant and I'm tired of paying six dollars a loaf for bread. DH wants me to buy a bread maker. I've made bread in the past and know I can do it. We had a bread maker when I was young but I don't remember what kind. I remember you put all the ingredients in and pushed a button and at the end of the day there was bread.

Sorry NJN. I never had one.
Probably never will. Low carb diet and all.
Why not check Consumer Reports and see which ones they like?
I have one. I bought it almost 25 years ago when bread makers first came out & it is a huge square box that weighs a ton but still works. I use it sporadically. I may go years without using it & then decide to make bread frequently after I get it out. Mine is a Sanyo. I don't know much about them, but I'd say this one has been worth the $200 - $300 I paid for it. I have no idea what they cost now.
I used to make bread all the time. But not gluten free, you'll probably have to get special gf recipes. Most wheat bread relies on the gluten to trap the CO2 from the yeast to make it rise. No gluten means you'll have to start from a whole new formula..., and the commercial breadmakers might not be compatible with GF recipes.
The only bread maker I ever had was my hands and the oven. Sorry. I have no words of wisdom.

Thaniks JPT, I've looked extensively into the GF recipes. I have several I'd like to try. I'm just not a big kneader and all.

I have one! Dh's Grandfather gave it to me when he moved and didn't need it anymore. I was in the 'probably will never have one camp' because I just didn't care that much. But I LOVE it. It is so easy to use. It takes about three hours but you literally just put the ingredients in and hit start. Takes about 3 minutes to prepare and then you leave it alone until it's done. I am using it now to make bread to go with beef stew. I made bread the other day for French Toast.
Mine is a Cuisinart. I have no idea how much it costs new. I also have never made gluten free bread, but there are about 5 Gluten Free recipes that came with the recipe book that goes with the bread maker. I just looked- there are a lot more ingredients for the GF breads, but it would work. I'm sure you could fine more recipes as well.
I have a Cuisinart breadmaker. It has a gluten free setting. My son has celiacs so bake GF bread using Bobs Redmill GF wonderful bread mix. Cool the loaf then slice in individual slices and 2 slices in a baggie and freeze. Then u always have bread for sandwiches. It molds quickly so best to freeze if u won't use it all.
OMG - I just checked they are so cheap now. I would definitely buy one.
And JPT makes a good point. Maybe check for recipes first before making the investment.
I haven't done any research as of yet. DH wants me to get one. I honestly wouldn't mind. DS likes sandwiches. I buy him GF bread but it's so darn expensive.

We have a store here that sells all the Redmill stuff. They have tons of GF mixes. They have all the alternative flours. I do know it molds easily. Thanks LGS.

I have one that is older than some of the people on this board...I love it but don't use it often enough. If you do get one, invest in one of those slicing racks. I use my electric knife with it and makes perfect slices.
DD is gluten sensitive. We just stopped buying bread. She does eat it every so often but once ya stop you won't miss it.
Tell that to my DS. I have gotten him to give up a lot. He still likes bread.

DD loves it but she's finally realized how bad it makes her feel. Also, you know even soy sauce can have gluten. It's amazing once you start reading labels.
Yes. Luckily he doesn't like soy sauce. We have a bakery that has started selling gluten free things. Fortunately he's not one of those that if he has a crumb of gluten he is near death. As long as he avoids the main sources stuff like soy sauce doesn't bother him.

Mine was just cluttering the pantry, gave it away. but they are great for those who want to make bread a lot in that manner. I think the most annoying thing is you get one shape of bread, whether a circle or square. Although, but you just make and rise the dough in and then bake the dough in a bread pan of your choice.

I've been reading some reviews. I think I'm going to look into the Cuisinart one. The only complaints seem to be the display numbers are hard to read.

DH bought me a stand mixer last year. It's still in the box. Long story. I really need to take it out and use it.

DH bought me a Kitchenaide last year. But the one he got isn't the one he wanted. He wanted the biggest one with the tilt back handle mixer. He didn't realize they didn't all do that. So we debated taking it back and exchanging it. We boxed it back up and put it away and were "going to get around to it". It's still sitting there. I really need to just break down and use it.

My KA Mixer is a workhorse. It was a wedding present to my parents back in 1965 and still runs strong.
DH & I have an understanding that we don't purchase anything over $100 without at least talking to the other. Should anything happen to KA mixer, I have the right (wrong word but hey, it works) to replace it with no notice, discussion, anything.
Note: I do not need permission for anything from DH. Our agreement keeps both of us in financial check.
I have an older machine. I prefer to make bread using my KitchenAid mixer.
Some of the new machines have an option for GF bread.
I use my KitchenAid mixer too, I found I was only using the bread machine on the dough setting anyways, because I didn't like the hole that the paddle left when I baked in the machine.
Just a hint or two, I found my over the stove microwave oven is a perfect "proof" box for yeast dough, I just turn on the down light over the range, and in about 20 minutes, the inside of the oven is about the perfect temp! If you don't have that, put a cup of water in and heat it up and let it sit inside, and it too will make the inside perfect.
I don't know if this works for gf recipes, but just about every yeast one comes out better if you add a tsp of lemon juice. It acts as a dough conditioner, and help an even rise.

I don't blame DH. We didn't do enough research. The one we got is really nice and we got it at Sam's on Black Friday for about half off. It was a huge big deal. But they only carried the one kind. So we couldn't take it back and upgrade. We thought about just returning it and then using the money toward a bigger one but we just never got around to it.

Oh, that was not towards anything you said. It was meant to be about what my KA means to me. I would replace it in a heartbeat with another KA. I may not use it as often as I should (sucker is heavy to move around) but that and my antique stove are my prized kitchen possessions.
Actually, I have 2 KA mixers. I got the second one from Goodwill. Newer model but not as much of a workhorse as the older one.

BTW, is it a tilt back or lift style? If it is tilt, you can always replace the bowl if you want the handled one. Personally, I hate the handle on my bowl.
I'll have to look. I haven't even used it. The head doesn't tilt back though.

DH didn't believe me the year I told him I wanted a kitchen aid mixer. He thought asking for an appliance for a gift was a trick. Then we watched Emeril and he used his constantly, so I got one!

Did you tell him to use a diamond tennis bracelet as a ribbon? I'm sure they have that on pinterest.

Here's the story about my diamond bracelet. Mom asks me what I want for my birthday - something personal, not practical. So I say, Mom, I've really been wanting a pair of gold hoop earrings for a while now. Could you get me some of those? So, DH doesn't get me the earrings for Christmas or my birthday, and I open Mom's gift, and it's a ..... bracelet. A nice gold tennis bracelet with little diamonds all around. But it's not my gold hoop earrings. Why ASK me?????
