Yes, Ebola ravages healthy people with a very high mortality rate. I think it's called "Learning from history". The bubonic plague killed 1/3 of the entire population of the planet. Even wars haven't done that. So yeah, I kind of think it behooves us to pay attention. Sheesh.
Do I think I will get Ebola or am somehow cowering in fear here? No, I am going about living my life. But I certainly would like to see that the Health care system and Public Health is going to get a handle on this. And, I would like to see a POTUS who isn't such an lazy idiot who only seems to care about his own self interests.
Yep.
I'd like to see actual smart precautions.
On a better note, I talked to my friend that works at Children's Healthcare, and they are ready. They have their quarantine units up and have had a bunch of staff training. They are right across the street from Emory.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
Plus, nothing tends to spread fear and paranoia as much as LYING, or at least being grossly misinformed.
Obama said their was no chance ebola would make it to the U.S.--um, WRONG.
He said the CDC had protocols in place that would ensure no health care workers were infected--um, WRONG.
He said that there was no way any infected workers could spread it across the country--the jury is still out on that one, but a cruise ship was denied two port of calls, and the CDC is contacting people that were on the same plane as an infected worker, the NEXT DAY.
I'm not saying Obama is deliberately doing this--he can't be an expert on everything--but those who are advising him are not doing a good job, and he is ultimately responsible for them, also.

Well, I could agree with you--but then we'd both be wrong.

Well, of course it was stupid. They didn't stop people from Africa coming here.
How are you going to stop people from Africa coming here? Sure, you could ban flights from Africa, but then instead of them going through a screening process at the airport, they're going to sneak in via other countries and other ways.
Illegal immigrants should tell you just because someone isn't supposed to be entering the US doesn't mean they wont.

????
It's not illegal immigrants that are the issue. We have VERY FEW illegal immigrants here from Africa.
The guy who brought it here was not an illegal.

Obama's modus operandi is to simply fluff things off. Oh, they are "JV". They are no threat. We are far too self important to be affected by pesky third world nations. Well, he has been WRONG on several occasions due to his flat out arrogance.

Travel to another country by rail or car and fly into the U.S. from there? Travel into Canada or Mexico and drive across the border? By boat?
Just because someone shouldn't be in the US doesn't mean they won't get in.
That just is not happening in any significant numbers. Banning passengers from air travel that originates in Western Africa would keep 99.999999999999999999999999999999999999% of them out.
Again, it's NOT illegal immigrants from Africa that are remotely the issue here.

So what? Doesn't mean we have to make it easy for them does it?
Personally I would rather have them go through an airport where they can go through a screening process to determine risk and need for isolation rather than forcing people to sneak back home undetected.
Never said illegal immigrants are the issue, I was showing them as an example that you can ban people from entering all you want, it doesn't mean they won't get in.

You seriously have no clue about how people from various places can or cannot get into this country.

You are seriously naive if you think it's impossible to get in this country even when flights from a certain area have been banned.
No one said "impossible".
But again, what you are suggesting is simply NOT HAPPENING. Banning people whose flights originate in West Africa would keep out 99.999999999999999999999999999999999999999999% of them.
At least it would be a good start.

CDC Director Tom Frieden has elaborated on this point. “Isolating countries won’t keep Ebola contained and away from American shores,” he said this week. “Paradoxically, it will increase the risk that Ebola will spread in those countries and to other countries.” Frieden’s point, echoed by the White House, is an important one. Sealing off West Africa, a region already drastically underprepared for this epidemic, would not only cut off lifesaving resources, but drive the epidemic underground. “People will move between countries, even when governments restrict travel and trade,” Frieden said this week. “And that kind of travel becomes almost impossible to track.”
Joshua Michaud is the Associate Director of the Global Health Policy Team at the Kaiser Family Foundation, an independent, non-partisan operating foundation that works to inform the public. He agrees with what other public health experts have been saying. “Travel bans might not achieve the goals that are set out for them. If the goal is to seal off the countries in West Africa and not allow cases of Ebola into the United States, [they] may actually make the problem more complicated and difficult."
With hundreds of alternate routes, he worries that some infected individuals would be sneak in through other countries or faking a visa to gain entry. “Making a full-out ban is driving people underground and if they truly want to get into the United States, they would find a way.”
Micuad says that pushing people below the radar puts a significant amount of pressure on public health officials. “It’s difficult to imagine how (a travel ban) would operate sufficiently. ... It would appear to exacerbate the problem rather than protect us.”

This x 1000. Belize will not even let that cruise ship move a "possible exposed patient" to their country so they can take a flight back to the U.S. Heck they won't even let the cruise ship dock. See how easy that was, all that country had to say was NO!
A coworker is supposed to go on a cruise in a few weeks, and it's on that ship. She is trying to change ships now.
The ship wasn't refused docking in Belize(rather entry. Belize is a tender port). Passengers were allowed off in Belize, just not that one passenger and her companion. The ship was refused docking in Cozumel. That passenger was a lab supervisor who handled an Ebola sample 19 days before the CDC decided they should be concerned and the passenger self isolated to her cabin, and showed absolutely no symptoms of Ebola. It is now past the incubation period and she still shows zero signs or symptoms.
It was the carnival magic. No reason not to sail on that ship.

12% of ebola cases don't show symptoms for up to 35 days--not the 21 as the CDC likes to put out there.

It says that recent studies conducted in West Africa have demonstrated that 95% of confirmed cases have an incubation period in the range of 1 to 21 days; 98% have an incubation period that falls within the 1 to 42-day interval.

I don't think we have to be paranoid about it--but--
A. we aren't even taking minimum precautions
B. the CDC really has no clue what they are doing
C the government is in the business of either deliberately lying about this or showing us how truly, grossly incompetent they are

According to the latest WHO estimates, there were about 219 million cases of malaria in 2010 and an estimated 660 000 deaths. Africa is the most affected continent: about 90% of all malaria deaths occur there.
So, where are the headlines warning the US about malaria? I'm sure there are people here who carry malaria in their blood (and could possibly infect others via mosquito transmission).
Malaria is preventable, and is not contagious. It is caused by a parasite.

You can't win with liberals. If you aren't hysterical about what they are hysterical about, like the Mythology WAR ON WOMEN, OMG! Then you "Don't Care'. Then, if you show concern about what they are not concerned about, ie Ebola, then you have simply gone off the deep end into the twilight zone. Uh huh.
