I just never understand the arguments that voter ID laws are discriminatory. Adults in this country are supposed to have an ID.

I thought it was considered discriminatory because you have to pay for an ID and poor uneducated people don't have the means to get one.

Then make them free.  Why not?  We give away phones, an ID is nothing.

It's not the ID card itself that is the issue.  It's the documentation you have to produce to obtain that ID that can run into serious dollars.

To comply with REAL ID, which makes a state issued DL or ID card acceptable for use in air travel, there has to be a legal paper trail for EVERY name you've had over the years.  Men, usually not a problem, as they tend to have the same name over their lives.  Women marry, divorce, remarry....often taking their husband's name in doing so.  When that woman has to go for a renewal for her DL or ID, she needs not only a certified copy of her birth certificate, but cert copies of marriage license, divorce decree, marriage license....so you now are into 4 documents that aren't cheap anymore.

I had to get a certified copy of my marriage license from California.  It took several weeks, and cost me $65.  I can afford it.   Multiply that, and then consider a woman who may be struggling along on low wages, and you can see that she might not be able to produce that ID in time at the polls.

I think there will be thousandfold more people disenfranchise than those attempting voter fraud.

Why didn't you keep the first one?

Or--just keep the first marriage, then you only have one change to worry about.

Um, the church certificate isn't accepted (I still have that), it has to be a certified copy of the license filed with the county.

Oh, and I do still have my first marriage, nearly 40 years, thank you very much.

Yeah, probably didn't need any of that stuff years ago when you got your license. But just wait...I'll just silently think "told you so" later on...

 Duh.

Advice for those ladies who haven't yet married, do yourself an enormous favor and keep your birth name....

Why is that a "favor"?

I don't care--do it or don't--but it's not a big deal to change it if you want to, either.

Yes. It is.

No, it isn't.  You just put whatever name you want on your marriage license--and that's it.  Take that with you ONE TIME when you get your new driver's license.

I am talking about changing your name. Not just when you get married.

Why else would you change your name?

I renew my licence on line. Have for 15 years. I don't even look the same in my picture. And I have changed addresses and my name in those 15 years. I've done it all online of by mail...

Wow!  Fifteen years?  That's really progressive.  Many states just recently (like in the last 7-10 years) started allowing that. Since 1999?!  Wow.

Actually, I take that back. The last time I was actually in a DMV was 15 years ago. I've renewed and changed my name and address either on line or through the mail. My Pict is 15 years old.

Hiding from the Mob? Witness Protection?

Evading creditors? Evading paternity suits?

If you are in witness protection--they give you new ID's.

As for the last two, if those deadbeats can't vote--I don't care.

If I were to want to change my name now, back to my maiden name, it wouldn't be so simply.

People change their name for any number of reasons. Not all are for illegal reasons.

I was unable to renew in both Wisconsin and Arizona. Had to march my happy ass in there in person. Of course in Arizona, your license is good until you're 75 years old. Mine expires in 2030.

AZ must've changed that. I moved to AZ in 2007 and my DL is good till I'm 65. The MVD manual says you have to renew your pic every 12 years though. They took a new pic when I changed my name after getting married so it'll be another 10 years before I need to get a new pic.

Between the DL not expiring for decades and no DST, I'm disinclined to ever leave my desert.

We have to go every 4 years I think it is.

For a while you could choose the 10 year thing and I did at that time. I know mine are due in the next 2 years I think.

ETA, I checked and it is 8 years now.

When I moved, I actually struggled to come up with the items needed to get an ID. You needed a LOT of things to prove residency, and they weren't things I had. Also, you needed 3 pieces in addition to your birth certificate and social security card. This is for the Real ID that JPT referred to.

For example, lease agreement with your name on it (if you are an adult living with family, you won't have that), utility bill in your name (ditto), bank statement sent to the address of residency (most working poor don't have bank accounts) ...

So while you and I may have those things, most working poor live with multiple adults in one house and don't have access to the items required. It was a real struggle for me, so I can understand why it would be difficult for people who don't have the means.

** we do not have a lease where I live, we don't pay utilities, I wanted my ID before I got any mail from my bank. I had to have the school write a letter stating I lived at the address, and the BMV had to get special permission to accept it. Granted my circumstances are unusual, but as I stated, many working poor live with many adults in one house and not everyone will have a utility in their name.
