Of course DD came home from Public School to inform me what an evil meanie Christopher Columbus was and how he didn't discover America, etc. So, what you think you know you don't and that means you can never now get the right answer on Jeopardy!
Sure, there were people here--but Columbus' journey was VERY important. It is viewed differently, depending on which side of the equation you may fall--but it was important, either way.
The "discovery" by the Vikings led to, well, nothing of note. The voyage by Columbus opened up the Americas for exploration and colonization by the European powers.
Hate him if you want to--but unless you actually ARE a Native American OR you are willing to move back to Europe, Africa, Asia, or wherever else your ancestors came from--then STFU.

Well, I could agree with you--but then we'd both be wrong.
Well, we are simply going to just scrub history. If the historical person didn't behave with the sensibilities of our generation then we will simply remove them from the history books and try to find someone who is less known that we don't know any "bad" stuff about and that they can pump up to fit the politically correct ideal. Sorry, the influences of history are the influences of histories. And, human beings are a complicated and messy lot. There are people who have done many great and good things but also had underlying sins, issues, and flaws. It seems we are soooo immature nowadays that we can only view people as all good or all evil and not realize the shades in between. Kind of sad really.
Well Columbus "discovered" America by accident. So it could have been the Indies that had a July 4th.
