Opera Cast Members Refuse To Sing Until Muslim Woman Wearing Veil Is Kicked Out

On Monday, France’s government pledged to draft more specific guidelines for its anti face-covering law after a Muslim woman wearing a veil was forced to leave the Opera Bastille in Paris.

The woman, accompanied by a companion, are believed to have been tourists from the Gulf. The pair was sitting in the front row right behind the conductor and could be seen on monitors. In the second act of La Traviata, cast members noticed the woman wearing a veil and objected to continue performing unless the veil was removed or the woman left the theatre.

“A singer spotted her in the front row during the second act. Some performers said they didn’t want to sing.” (source)

Because the woman refused to take her veil off, she was forced the leave the performance by a security guard. Thiellay explained:

“He told her that in France there is a ban of this nature, asked her to either uncover her face or leave the auditorium. The man asked the woman to get up, they left. It was unpleasant getting her to leave. But there was a misunderstanding of the law and the lady either had to respect it or leave.” (source)

Fellow opera fans were quite shocked by the theatre’s behavior. Guy Laurent, who regularly attends the Bastille Opera, said:

“What possible harm could a woman sitting quietly in the audience with face covered do to anyone? The woman would clearly have felt utterly humiliated by what happened – French culture should be more tolerant. It is not the job of theatres to enforce petty laws.” (source)

In France, Muslims have been banned from covering their faces in public since a law was passed in 2011. While women living on the outskirts of larger cities are usually fined 150 euro ($190) for disobeying the law, this is the first instance in which someone has been forced out of a venue.

The woman has been fined 180 euro and she and her guest will not be refunded for their seats, which were 231 euros ($294) each.

Good. She broke the law. They should throw her in jail.

The law IS the law, ignorance being no excuse and all that.  If you're visiting another country, be sure you know the laws!

While it is the law, I think the law is stupid.

I think it was poorly handled. I also wonder if the singers knew it was a law when they kicked up a fuss.
Ridiculous law. What is it supposed to achieve?

It makes it so people's faces can be seen so that terrorists can be identified.

There have been MEN dressed as women, who used the heavy robe with a head cover and veil to hide the fact that they had weapons and intended to use them. At least with the face exposed, people would know when a man is dressed as a woman.

What if I showed up to the bank in a ski mask.. The mountains are my religion, don't tell me what I can and can not practice!

Sorry, but a line has to be drawn.

Who in the hell goes to "see" a play with their head covered?

The French have this view on Religion that goes like this...To ensure that there is no religious persecution of one religion OR religious sect by another, there will be NO FORMS OF RELIGIOUS DOGMA.

So while part of this "no head covering" is about safety, it really is about the French views on keeping the religious world free of all religious influences.

This includes wearing crosses or the star of david pendants, etc. at government establishments and schools.

So basically to keep people free, they took their freedoms away.

Exactly. This is very different from religious persecution. It's a safety and security issue.

Law enforcement relies heavily on face identification.

These head coverings are just too convenient and easy to hide behind.

So, this being also forward in the news, the man who just was released by DPRK (North Korea) for leaving a bible behind...I would be interested to see how you all view this...

I think this comment is very interesting.
