"Thank God we had the reformation so people could actually read the Bible for themselves." - huskerbb
Catholics read the Bible for themselves just as much as followers of all the other Denominations do. They just have a different Bible than other Denominations, with a few more books in it.
That didn't happen until the Reformation. Up until that time, it was only in Latin. Luther translated it into German, and other translations followed. Not everyone could read--but even fewer people could read Latin.

Well, I could agree with you--but then we'd both be wrong.
I Catholic here. Pope Francis is my hero for so many reasons.
God is not a divine being or a magician, but the Creator who brought everything to life,"
Note Wizard is not valid as it conjures up trickery, Francis puts the emphasis on Creator rather than divine being. Why is that heretical?
God Creates and supports all sorts of diversity.
rather happy with all that

You were going for ancient times. I was commenting on modern times, since this Pope's commentary is based in modern times

I promised myself to stay away from religious threads but I just have to say that this is what I would say if I could say it as well as you. I thought I was crazy for seeing it that way. The derision of some of these comments is very telling about the state of Christianity as a whole. By the way I am not Catholic but I think that shouldn't matter. Thank you aergia.

But the doctrine of papal infallibility was developed before that, when people couldn't read the Bible for themselves. It was to cement overall church authority--and is not Biblically based.
