First two kids increase happiness; third, not so much, study says

Parents' happiness soars with their first child, but that increase is cut in half by their second, and there's only a negligible increase in happiness by the time the third comes along, a new study finds.

What's more, parents who are the most educated and who give birth at 35 to 49 years of age report the largest, longest-lasting spikes in happiness, while those who are 23 to 34 feel happier at first but quickly return to baseline or even slightly lower happiness levels.

Teens actually experience a decline in happiness that doesn't go above normal levels within the first year of birth, reports Smithsonian. "The fact that among older and better-educated parents, well-being increases with childbearing, but the young and less-educated parents have flat or even downward happiness trajectories, may explain why postponing fertility has become so common," one researcher tells the Daily Mail.

The study, published in the journal Demography, analyzed data submitted by more than 7,000 parents in the UK and Germany as part of the German Socio-Economic Panel and the British Household Panel Survey.

Researchers looked at how people reported their happiness levels alongside whether they were preparing for or recently had a baby. They did not, however, parse the effects of having multiples instead of singletons.

(Meanwhile, this couple is expecting what could be their 13th boy.)

I don't fit those statistics.

My joy increased with each child and continues today. I enjoy them more now I think. They are a joy for me.

Happiness is a trap word. I can be happy for now and not be happy right about now. Just depends on what is going on.

If I had the means, I could see myself with more kids.

But honestly I am completely satisfied with the number I have.

There are 4 of us. 2 of each and we can still do the family of four deals!

IMHO, this is a stupid article.
35 to 49 years olds are lucky to give birth, period. So that wipes that opinion out, because those parents are desperate to have a child.
Yup, a stupid article.

I read somewhere that you have the first one for yourself, the second one for the first child. Not sure what it said about subsequent ones. But I would love to have another, and wish we had met at a younger age where it would have been possible.

I was the first child & of course my parents loved me but I can guarantee they were much happier when my brother came along. I was a sort of moody brooding child. My brother was a happy sunny child & delightful to be around.

I was a problem child and can guarantee my parents were happier with my siblings. I was the second child out of five.

 Don't even say these things!

I will be really sad not to have a little baby in the house any more cry  But I am very much ready to move on with the next chapter of life!

#7? How many all together?

Someone had to raise you until at least the age of 3. biggrin

I am the first of 2. Don't know there is anything special about it. It just is.

I have tried to treat each of my kids uniquely. Never called J the middle child. I always refer to him as the oldest son. Don't refer to A as the baby often. He is the youngest son.

C is the oldest child.

They all seem to be well rounded and adjusted.

I do wonder though. If subsequent kids are not happy makers. Then those Duggars must be down right miserable.biggrin

When I was growing up, Mrs. Garvey across the street had 24 children, 14 in the 14 years they lived in the house before I went to college.

I don't think they had any time for anything but BUSY. And church, of course.

Kidding, of course. I would not want a third child, but many people love have lots of kids.

As a single parent I always found three to be a lot. I never had quite enough hands in the parking lot or store. But I love each and every one of my kids. I think if you're raising them alone it IS harder but I guess that's JMO. It's so much easier now that I'm married. I don't know how my mom raised nine of us. Honest to god I don't. Seven of them girls. I would have lost my mind.

I did want four though. Just never happened.

It's crazy aint it? I have always thought it was easier with 3. I always had that extra set of hands with 3. C was 3 when J came and just turned 5 when A came.

And they had each other to play with and I could actually get things done.

As for being a single parent, at times it might have been nice to have another adult but in the end I liked not having to deal with it. What I said went and I made the decisions and didn't have to worry about it. It seemed easier all the way around.

If I had it to do all over again, I would.
