My house almost got broken into...

We've had a couple of break-ins in my neighborhood lately.  Nothing major.  They're in and out in a matter of minutes and have just taken high ticket items.  Laptops, small tv's, and the like.  We have a lot of rental houses that are empty here right now.  Repair men are always in and out.  I guess it would be really easy to buy some dark slacks and a work type button down and drive a truck and blend in.  I think you could probably pull it off easily.  It's pretty empty around here during the day as most couples work and kids are in school.

I left DS home so I could take SS to counseling.  About 3:30 the dogs all ran into the master bath and began going crazy.  They never go into our bathroom because we have the bath where the sinks are separate from the toilet and tub.  And the toilet and tub area is tiny and has a small window in it.  The two pits were on top of the toilet trying to get out through the window.  DS went in there and he said he could see a man through the blinds.  He called 911 but by the time they got there the man was gone.  The police said the dogs probably scared him off.

So, everything is okay and the doggies get an extra bone today!

I will never be without dogs if I can possibly help it - they're worth their weight in gold.  Glad you and yours are ok!

Thanks TLC and HM. Layla will eat anyone who doesn't belong here. Carlee wouldn't let them get very far. Hemi is old so I don't know how much strength he has left but he's intimidating. I've always said this is not a house people will visit uninvited!

Yep, scary dogs are not all bad! DH is worried, naturally, because he's not home.

Glad you got through this OK. A dog (or dogs) are always recommended by the police over here to help keep burglars, peeping toms, etc. away - far away.

I'm glad that no one actually broke in, NJN. Thank goodness for your dogs!

There are random break-ins in my neighborhood as well. I have had two attempted break-ins; one after midnight when I was sleeping, and one during the day while I was at work. Unfortunately, I am not allowed to have pets.

Thanks all. The two younger dogs are half pit half lab. The black one looks mean. The brown one not as much. But they all three go nuts when a stranger comes. And we're only supposed to have one dog. But things got out of hand...

The ONLY time our house was broken into was when we put the dogs in a kennel when we went on vacation. Never again.

Yes, once our sweet dog is gone (she's getting really old), DH wants a break. But he's thinking of taking a job that will require more travel, and I feel safer with a big dog in the house.

She is 13 1/2.  She's a golden retriever.  She's basically getting near the high end of life expectancy for her breed.

She is the sweetest dog, but she has a really mean bark when she hears things around the outside of the house.

I've heard nothing but good things about goldens. I've always been partial to smaller dogs, though.

I feel safer with a dog period. Lily hears things that I don't and will bark. And she has distinct barks whines and growls. She has an I'm bored and want attention whine bark and a hey there's smething here that isn't supposed to be whine bark. Usually it's a cat or squirrel. But even though she's a medium dog she is the best security system ever.

 Exactly.

DH always yells at the dogs when they bark...at the mailman, or kids running across the court.

Um, no, that's what they are supposed to do. They don't bark just to be barking.

Motion activated outside flood lights would be a good idea. Bad guys don't like lights, and the cops LOVE motion activated lights when a bad guy is trying to escape.

Even small dogs that aren't for "protection" serve as the best early warning system...mine can hear a flea fart at 100 yds.

Monster is a small alarm dog. He is good at running off squirrels and cats and the occasional toad. And he was the brave one who found and cornered the snake and wouldn't let it move in the house.

Glad your dogs were there. And glad you son called the police instead of going outside.

When we had a cat, it would scare the pants off me in the night. It would send things crashing to the floor, etc. Now that we have a dog, I wish we would have gotten one sooner. I spent a lot of time home with the kids at night while DH was at work. It would have been nice to have something to bark at the things in the night.

SO glad you are all safe and sound NJN. And glad your stuff is safe, but more glad that YOU are all safe.

I have small battery powered motion detector lights (from Costco) attached with two small screws to the porch ceiling and two other location outside.

There are also solar-powered security lights that attach to gutters with a set-screw, and can be removed leaving no damage.

What Ed said. I have some. Stick them in your windows facing out so they come on when someone walks by.

Okay, but what good will they do, at 3:30 pm.?

These thieves are coming during the day, when everyone is at work, or school.

I don't think they are a bad idea. I just think, they would be useless, in this situation.

LOL The dogs seem to work just fine. I have no doubt that if someone came into my house without permission that Layla would be having a nice snack.

Most crime like burglary happen during the day time.

Most hold ups happen before noon. Most before a store opens when deliveries are being made.

You are more likely to be the victim of a crime during the daylight hours than at night.

We're gone too much to have a dog. We live in a gated community with a secuity team that drives around 24 hours a day and we have a state of the art security system. I've honestly never heard of a break in our community. That would be scary for us. I'm glad your family is safe. That's terrifying.

 Yes she does!

Thanks PC.  Thing is we live in a nice neighborhood.  I guess that's what makes us a target though.  About two years ago there was a break in and they murdered the man who lived there.  But they found out later it was a high school student and he killed his teacher.  So that wasn't a random thing.  It was motive driven.  Not that it makes it better but it just means they aren't prowling houses and willing to kill for a robbery gone bad.  KWIM?  We haven't had that many break ins.  They just seem to be in and out and get the high priced items.  I guess that's the down side of living in a decent neighborhood.  People assume you have stuff.
