I do. I was 19 and I watched on TV as the Berlin Wall was chipped, and pulled apart by the people. It was an amazing thing to witness. I cried.
Soon after I was able to touch an actually portion of that wall. Again. I cried.
It's been 25 years. And I still tear up.
Do you remember it?

It was actually deconstructed between 1990 and 1992.
The ceremony was held in 1989 to mark the decision to take it down. Only a small portion was taken down at that point.

I remember listening to Reagan's speech. I wasn't into world politics at all at the time and I listened to the speech live on TV by chance. I was soo moved. Reagan was an awesome person.

How is East Germany doing now? I remember that for a LONG time East Berlin and East Germany were floundering, their economies dependent on help from the West.

Their infrastructure is still behind the West--but Germany as a whole is the biggest economy in Europe, and it's not close.
Ronald Reagan's lasting legacy.

Well, I could agree with you--but then we'd both be wrong.

I remember. I posted a pic of us in front of a piece taken at the Reagan Library. Very moving speech, very historical moment. We need another Ronald Reagan, IMO.
sorry, Lily, i got busy with DGD and didn't have a chance to respond.
i was 7 when the Wall went up. so i can only answer from the point of a child. i was very, very confused and i asked my parents about it. why would someone build a wall through a city? why would they build a wall to keep people out of their half of the city? my parents had to explain that the wall wasn't built to keep people out, it was built to keep people in. and of course that confused me as well. remember, i was only 7, and had no conception of Communism, or world politics.
but i always remembered the building of that wall, and watching it on the news, in black and white.

I completely understand.
And as an adult I have a hard time understanding the reasoning.
Thank you for sharing.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
I saw lots of walls when I was in England. It wasn't that unusual at one time. I wish they would build one around the US to keep out illegal immigrants, but I know that will never happen.
