WASHINGTON – A woman who proclaimed the name of Jesus Christ during the first-ever Islamic Jumaa prayer gathering at Washington’s National Cathedral was ejected from the building on Friday.
“Jesus Christ died on that cross over there,” the unidentified woman declared as she stood in the front of the room. “He is the reason why we are to worship only Him. Jesus Christ is our lord and savior!”
A man nearby immediately approached her and attempted to reach for her arm, but she pulled away.
“We have built, and allowed you here in mosques across this country,” she continued. “Why can’t you worship in your mosque, and leave our churches alone?”
Another man approached as she was speaking and began to escort her out.
According to reports, the woman made the declaration immediately following the opening announcements that commenced this afternoon.
As previously reported, while the national cathedral has hosted interfaith gatherings in the past, the Islamic Jumaa prayers presented today at the historic Episcopalian site were the first of its kind. The idea for the invitation originated during the planning stage for the memorial service for African apartheid leader Nelson Mandela as talks between the cathedral’s liturgical director, Gina Campbell, and South African Ambassador Ebrahim Rasool took place.
The cathedral stated earlier this week that the goal of the event is to facilitate greater acceptance between Christians and Muslims, calling the Islamic Jumaa prayers at the house of worship a “powerful symbolic gesture.”
“Leaders believe offering Muslim prayers at the Christian cathedral shows more than hospitality,” representatives for the National Cathedral wrote in a press release about the matter. “It demonstrates an appreciation of one another’s prayer traditions and is a powerful symbolic gesture toward a deeper relationship between the two Abrahamic traditions.”
“This is a dramatic moment in the world and in Muslim-Christian relations,” Rasool added. “This needs to be a world in which all are free to believe and practice and in which we avoid bigotry, Islamaphobia, racism, anti-Semitism, and anti-Christianity and to embrace our humanity and to embrace faith.”
In addition to Campbell and Rasool, Masjid Muhammad of The Nation’s Mosque, representatives from the All Dulles Area Muslim Society, Council on American-Islamic Relations, Islamic Society of North America and Muslim Public Affairs Council were all in attendance. The event was also facilitated so that Muslims would face Mecca during the Jumaa prayers.
Washington’s National Cathedral has traditionally been recognized as the cathedral of the presidents, being used for inaugural-based prayer services for the past 106 years. It has also hosted the funeral services for Presidents Ronald Reagan, Gerald Ford and Dwight Eisenhower, and was dubbed the “National House of Prayer” by the U.S. Congress.
As previously reported, last year, over two thousand people joined Barack Obama and Joseph Biden for an interfaith service surrounding the president’s re-inauguration. The service included a variety of guests from a number of religions, who presented Christian, Catholic, Muslim, Sikh and Jewish prayers for Obama.
Leaders of the National Cathedral have also come out in support of same-sex “marriage,” and have opened the facility to be used for “gay marriages.”

I think it's extremely arrogant to think that it's okay to interrupt someone else's worship service to insult them,
and to push one's own religious belief like she did.
If she really believes "Jesus Christ died on that cross over there,” she's delusional. Does she think she's in the Middle East? Does she think it's the same cross, imported and well preserved after 2000 years?

I think it's arrogant and stupid of someone going into a Christian church for a Muslim worship service. It's sacrilegious and whoever had that bright idea should not be allowed to be making decisions anymore. Perhaps the Jews can invite the Muslims into their synagogs next if it's ok. Or, hey - think the Muslims will let us use their Mosques for holy communion?
Freedom of religion is tantamount to this country - that doesn't mean sponsored insult of another's religion, which is what this is.

Honestly, if the Church leaders of that particular building have not only allowed the service but actually organized the service, then the woman has absolutely no moral high ground.
The National Cathedral is an Episcopal church. The American Episcopal Church (in particular the American Episcopal Church in the DC area - just ask Falls Church) is very liberal in its leanings, compared to the Catholic Church the Anglican Church and other Protestant sects.
The point of Freedom of Religion is to allow not just the different RELIGIONS to exercise their beliefs, but allow the individual sects within the religions to exercise their beliefs.
Which is one of the reasons why I honestly believe that legally, MARRIAGES should be taken off the table and that the government should only deal with Legal Unions and let the individual RELIGION decide if they want to sanctify a "marriage". Because one sect may not approve Gay Marriage, but another might not.
Well this is the same type of fruit. If one sect wants to allow its buildings to be open to interfaith services for whatever reason, it should be allowed without any interruption. And if an individual does not like what his/her particular sect's leadership is doing, work within the leadership or leave for a sect that better fits your belief system.
Which goes all ways...if your particular sect doesn't believe in gay marriages, then leave and find one that does (BTW, the American Episcopal Church has had a gay Bishop who then divorced his spouse).

There are a few churches in my area that allow other churches to use their building for their own services. They don't necessarily follow the same Christian beliefs.
Well, one of the churches allows a Korean service. I'm not sure what their beliefs are compared to ours.
Koreans can be Christians. Many churches have services for other languages.
It's a house of God to worship Jesus Christ. Out of ALL the places in the world - people should not bitch about hearing about Jesus when they walk inside one.

I mean, SERIOUSLY? People say there is not a war against Christianity in this country and now not even our churches are safe to talk about Christ.
Give me a break. This is beyond ridiculous.
I agree that there is a war against Christianity. But this is not the case. The owners of that particular building offered another religion to use their building for their worship. It doesn't matter WHY the owners of that building offered up the space, though in this case it was to build some basic understanding between the two religions so it was not like the Muslims were taking the building from the Christians...
The woman had no moral high ground to be disruptive during the service. If she had a problem with it, she should have gone to Diocese. Having that rant does nothing for the cause of saving Christians in America. It just points out how narrow minded a Christian can be...given there was prior approval.
One cannot demand justice if one cannot give justice to another.

Sometimes small congregations will rent space from a different denomination, sometimes people will have a cross-over service. Sometimes a church or a synagogue will allow another congregation to use their facility when there's a need.
There's nothing wrong with that. It's not like the Muslims came in and desecrated the place.

This. And the woman wasn't ejected for simply 'talking about Christ in a church'. She was ejected for interrupting a worship service. I assume that if it was an Episcopalian service and she ran up front and started ranting about Christ she would also be removed. It's not the topic - it's the behavior.
I'm waiting for a return invitation by the Muslims. Wondering if I should hold my breath...

And it is QUITE sacrilegious to be worshiping other Gods in the Lord's house. Since the Muslims don't recognize their God is the same as ours - they should not be there.

I have long believed that Christianity and Islam have more in common than they do differences, and obviously, the church leaders agree with me.
I would have escorted her out too. She was being inappropriate. Church is for worship, not yelling and throwing fits.
Lily, I have been into a Mosque. I was welcomed, and told I could worship in whatever way I saw fit, or not at all if I chose. They were warm and hospitable.

You were in there and told to worship however you saw fit.
Yet people are being killed daily because they are not decrying their religion and converting to Islam.

The truth is, if a Christian church were to ask to use a Mosque for a Christian service, they would be told no.
Episcopalian churches tend to be very liberal. Not sticking to the Bible and the Christian faith a lot of time. They are just a step up from the Unitarians.
So I am not surprised that they have "embraced" this idea of global religion.

Where you asked to cover your head? Did you have to wash before entering? Were you allowed to use any door you chose and did you have to stay in a certain place away from the men?

I actually believe so as well, but the Muslims do not. They believe they are worshiping a different God. And the very first commandment is "Though shall have no other Gods before me". Which means the church leaders that invited them in did so knowing they would be worshiping what they perceive to be a different God.
Tolerance does NOT mean condoning sin. Which is what they are doing.
Christians also invite people in to worship - or not worship, whichever - but they are going to tell you about Christ while you are there. This woman was thrown out of church for doing that - and that's wrong.
And I dare you to go into a Muslim mosque, walk in front of all the men, genuflect and take holy communion and see what happens.

Pitching a temper tantrum is not 'telling you about Christ'.

She did NOT pitch a temper tantrum. She made a declaration and refused to be man-handled. That is hardly throwing a temper tantrum.

Repeated declarations that could be heard by a congregation of that size? At an inappropriate time? And not stopping when obviously needing to? This counts as a temper tantrum and bad behavior. The words she used are irrelevant. It's the behavior that got her kicked out.
“Why can’t you worship in your mosque, and leave our churches alone?”
This is my question as well. A very valid question. A question that deserves an answer.

The expression "Don't bite the hand that feeds you" comes to mind. This CHURCH relies completely on private donations. Who do you think makes those donations? Muslims and Atheists? Hardly. And when church leaders fail to follow doctrine, members either replace them or they leave - and they take their checkbooks with them.

The "owners" of that particular building are its church members.
Actually, they are not. Not legally. The owners of the land and building are the "ruling" hierarchy of the American Episcopal Church. The Episcopal Church is not run like a small non-denomination. The local church members do not get choose who their Rector is. They cannot fire one that they do not like. That is decided by The Leadership of the American Episcopal Church. And this entity literally owns the land and the buildings.
Look up Falls Church and its history and what happened a few years ago. The "church membership" wanted to disassociate from the National Episcopal Church because of its growing liberal views. The membership lost. They could not take the land and building from the National Organization.
And morally, her ONE voice of descent does not get to override what the leadership of the Church has chosen. Just like in a small non-denom church would not allow ONE member to push the church to go one way or another.

This is my question as well. A very valid question. A question that deserves an answer.
Because they were invited to that particular church. They did not push their way into an Episcopal Service and overtake the Rector. Nor did they show up during off hours and start a service willy nilly.
They were invited. And again, if this woman felt so strongly, then deal with the people who opened the doors, not the invited guests.

Really? While I do believe that they are more liberal than many Christian Sects, I think you are going a bit far. They are not the only sect that allows women religious leaders, nor are they the only sect that accepts Gay and Lesbians into their leadership. So I am not sure where you get Unitarians or even global religion.

This is a sad statement.
The church is turning away from God and turning to political correctness and the way of the world.
"They were invited. And again, if this woman felt so strongly, then deal with the people who opened the doors, not the invited guests."
And there will never be a return invitation.

IMHO, muslim prayers should never be conducted in a church building devoted to the Christian God.
I also remember reading awhile back, that once muslims have prayers in a Christian church, the muslims believe that the building becomes a mosque and is no longer Christian.
IMHO, the Episcopalian's no longer follow the doctrine of Christ. That church in D.C., is nothing more than a political tool.
I remember the conflict within the Episcopalian Church when the church decided to allow gay men to be ministers. A lot of the members left the church. My sister and her DH left, and joined the Catholic Church over it.
And, yeah, the muslims will never allow a Christian service be performed within a mosque.
And they sure heck will not allow a non muslim anywhere close to Mecca.

So using the logic some are using on this thread...if I go to Episcopal services with my MIL, and start proclaiming the infallibility of the Pope, I'm not actually being disruptive.
Okay then.

I'm not even sure where to begin with how dumb this statement is. Catholic bashing got old so now we must move on to another denomination?
