It's supposed to be sunny and warm for us Thursday.

I got my bird today Bonny. Don't know if it will be thawed by Thursday but it wont matter cause we are putting it in a big crock pot on Wednesday and letting it cook all night.

The only problem is, food cooking all night tends to make me sick. But it is a whole lot easier.

My store didn't have any this year. I wasn't driving everywhere to find one.

I did get mine for .57 a pound.

To make sure your bird is completely thawed, take it out of its wrapping, remove the giblets, put it in your (clean) dishpan, and dribble a continuous small stream of COLD water over it. If you can up-end it so the water is going into the neck opening, even better. An hour or two of this should take care of any stubborn ice crystals. If you use stuffing, stuff it immediately before you put it in the oven.

For a picture perfect crispy skin, dry the bird completely - I've even used my hair dryer on low to make sure it is completely dry - then spray it all over with butter flavored cooking spray (Pam or house brand). Season lightly, and baste every 20 minutes or so, especially towards the end of the cooking time. Enjoy!

This is great! I love this Grandma!

Gosh I wish I knew who the Grandma is that wrote the letter below. Honestly, it's the funniest message! I hope it makes you smile as you prepare for your own family's Thanksgiving celebration this week.

Dear Family,

I'm not dead yet. Thanksgiving is still important to me. If being in my Last Will and Testament is important to you, then you might consider being with me for my favorite holiday. Dinner is at 2:00. Not 2:15. Not 2:05. Two. Arrive late and you get what's left over.

Last year, that moron Marshall fried a turkey in one of those contraptions and practically burned the deck off the house. This year, the only peanut oil used to make the meal will be from the secret scoop of peanut butter I add to the carrot soup.

Jonathan, your last new wife was an idiot. You don't arrive at someone's house on Thanksgiving needing to use the oven and the stove. Honest to God, I thought you might have learned after two wives - date them longer and save us all the agony of another divorce.

Now, the house rules are slightly different this year because I have decided that 47% of you don't know how to take care of nice things. Paper plates and red Solo cups might be bad for the environment, but I'll be gone soon and that will be your problem to deal with.

House Rules:

1. The University of Texas no longer plays Texas A& />The television stays off during the meal.

2. The "no cans for kids" rule still exists. We are using 2 liter Bottles because your children still open a third can before finishing the first two. Parents can fill a child's cup when it is empty. All of the cups have names on them and I'll be paying close attention to refills.

3. Chloe, last year we were at Trudy's house and I looked the other way when your Jell-O salad showed up. This year, if Jell-O salad comes in the front door it will go right back out the back door with the garbage. Save yourself some time, honey. You've never been a good cook and you shouldn't bring something that wiggles more than you. Buy something from the bakery.

4. Grandmothers give grandchildren cookies and candy. That is a fact of life. Your children can eat healthy at your home. At my home, they can eat whatever they like as long as they finish it.

5. I cook with bacon and bacon grease. That's nothing new. Your being a vegetarian doesn't change the fact that stuffing without bacon is like egg salad without eggs. Even the green bean casserole has a little bacon grease in it. That's why it tastes so good. Not eating bacon is just not
natural. And as far as being healthy... look at me. I've outlived almost everyone I know.

6. Salad at Thanksgiving is a waste of space.

7. I do not like cell phones. Leave them in the car.

8. I do not like video cameras. There will be 32 people here. I am sure you can capture lots of memories without the camera pointed at me.

9. Being a mother means you have to actually pay attention to the Kids. I have nice things and I don't put them away just because company is coming over. Mary, watch your kids and I'll watch my things.

10. Rhonda, a cat that requires a shot twice a day is a cat that has lived too many lives. I think staying home to care for the cat is your way of letting me know that I have lived too many lives too. I can live with that. Can you?

11. Words mean things. I say what I mean. Let me repeat:You don't need to bring anything means you don't need to bring anything. And if I did tell you to bring something, bring it in the quantity I said. Really, this doesn't have to be difficult.

12. Dominoes and cards are better than anything that requires a battery or an on/off switch. That was true when you were kids and it's true now that you have kids.

13. Showing up for Thanksgiving guarantees presents at Christmas. Not showing up guarantees a card that may or may not be signed. The election is over so I'll watch what I say about the bastard, and you will do the same. If we all stick to that, we'll have a good time. If not, I'll still have a good time but it will be at your expense.

In memory of your Grandfather, the back fridge will be filled with beer. Drink until it is gone. I prefer wine anyway. But one from each family needs to be the designated driver.

I really mean all of the above.
Love You,
Grandma

Well, I think it's time I order my pre-cooked dinner from the store. My mother just called and asked me if I had bought my turkey. She's going to die when she finds out I'm not cooking this year. Hopefully, I can fool her, but I doubt it. She loves my giblet gravy...

If I was having the usual brood at my house, I would cook. We usually have anywhere from 12-15 people. There will be a total of 5 this year. So I'm not going to cook the feast I usually do. Easier and less expensive to order it...

I just DON'T cook.  That's what I have a husband for...wink

I don't blame you at all O4. I wouldn't either if I didn't have to.

Heck I'd opt for going out so there would be no clean up.

I have never made giblet gravy. But I don't remember the actual giblets being in there.

Plans have changed. DSS & DIL are not coming down due to car trouble and the weather.

MIL is NOT going to BILs so that means we are going to her house so she won't be alone. I will cook the turkey, stuffing and mashed potatoes and then take it there. She has a pumpkin pie in the freezer and some frozen veggies too. I know fresh would be better but I don't want her out driving in this ick.

The roads will be clear of snow tomorrow but the traffic will be horrible.  If we could have left early today I would have but DS was working.  All the traffic that would have happened today will be tomorrow.  Since I will have to snow blow the driveway tomorrow morning (snow isn't going to end until morning) we won't be able to get on the road until 11 or so.  With the traffic it will take 3-4 hours to get there.  Just not worth it.

I wouldn't do it either. Doesn't sound worth it to me either.

How well does the casserole freeze? Would it keep till Christmas?

Do you do marshmallows or pecans?

I bought a 10 lb fresh turkey, the fixings for stuffing with sausage and granny smith apples, red bliss mashed potato's, dinner rolls, and pecan pie. Way too much food for 3 people.

I don't use marshmallows in the yams, pecans and brown sugar for the topping.

Pumpkin pie made.

Quiche, coffee cake and cranberry bread for Thanksgiving brunch made.

Need to start chopping squash and potatoes.

My sister the angel is going to do my supper caregiving shift tonight at my parents'.

So I can cook half their dinner here at home, and bring it over tomorrow.

Gotta find something really simple to have for supper here tonight while I'm cooking for tomorrow.

Maybe cereal!

Gonna peel and cut the potatoes get them in to soak and ready to go in the morning.

We're having leftovers for dinner tonight. I made two pumpkin pies and a pumpkin cheesecake. DN make two pecan pies and a broccoli rice casserole. I have assembled the green bean casserole and am working on putting the dressing together. Then pretty much everything will be done except for popping it in the oven tomorrow.

Well - here's this year's catastrophy

DH didn't put the ice packs in with the turkey that was thawing in the cooler - it was still cold, but totally thawed when I checked it this morning. I'll cook it (unstuffed) today, just to check it out. I bought another one, frozen, and I'm in the process of thawing it under cold running water.

And two more people got invited to join us - 7 instead of 5 guests.

Oh my! Lots of work ahead of me today and tomorrow. Fortunately, I planned on serving at 4:00.

We are eating really late this year to accommodate DN and Sparkly. We will eat about seven. She is doing lunch with his family and then doing some Black Friday Christmas shopping (yeah I know) and then coming here.

We are eating around 3-4. Told DS if he wants apps then we will do those around noon. i hate when apps are eaten an hour before the big meal. Who can eat after the apps so soon?
