DEAR ABBY: I am a single woman who raised three kids on one average income. They are all grown and on their own now. I still save and have a tight budget, but now I can spend some money on travel. I have opportunities to travel with friends and do it as often as I can afford.
The problem is my brother-in-law and sister love to tease, and they tell everyone that I'm "the rich sister." Abby, I am far from rich. I have asked them both to stop and told them their teasing hurts my feelings -- that I simply choose to spend my money differently than they do.
Our relationship has now become very strained. I have only one sister and would like to be close to her, but I can't laugh off their teasing any longer. -- HURT TRAVELER
DEAR HURT TRAVELER: When people persist in doing -- or saying -- something after being told it's hurtful, one has to wonder if it's not about humor at all. I suspect that your sister and her husband are somewhat jealous over the friendships you have and the adventures you are enjoying.
You might be subjected to this less if you become more close-mouthed about what you're doing and where you're going. Give it a try. But if the "teasing" continues, tell "Sissy" she's going to be seeing a lot less of you and then follow through.
I think she needs to just take her sister aside and have a frank talk with her and make it very clear to her. If that doesn't work then follow the advice above.
It can get annoying to hear someone make the same stupid joke over and over and over. I think she has put up with it long enough. And, she should tell her sister in no uncertain terms that this is no longer cool or funny to her. And, yes, realize that as long as sis tries, she will still slip up a few times until she gets to a new normal. But, you were always a big fan of telling people exactly what you think so why shouldn't she?
I went through this with my brother and his family when I was working for the airline here. "Well, you can fly free everywhere" etc. etc. Not exactly... Depended a lot on season, load, which airline, etc. etc. Not just a walk up to the counter and check in for first class type of thing. But they had this stuck in their mind that work for an airline = free flights anywhere and anytime. I just laughed it off... No use in getting upset.

Fine, then tell her. That would at least be better than the whining she is doing now.
I just think it's a stupid thing to get all riled up about.

Well, I could agree with you--but then we'd both be wrong.

Yes, but I think she needs to really set down with her and spell it out. And, maybe she did that. If so, then she should decide where to go from there as Prudie said. But, I would give it one more shot.
People say things like that because they are jealous. They are trying to make her feel bad because she is able to do things they can not right now.
I think the sister should let them stew and not change anything she is doing.
She raised her kids and now has the ability to go do some things she wants to do. Nothing to be ashamed of. Enjoy it. If the BIL and sister have a problem with it, that is there problem to work out.
I would be willing to bet they were the same ones who made little jabs and comments when she was struggling with kids to raise.

I don't think it is jealousy necessarily. She just might think it is 'funny" and they have just gotten into a pattern of "you are the rich sister" type nonsense.
From experience, that kind of thing always starts with a bit a jealousy.
Like those "must be nice" comments that come from people when say something about going on vacation.

Yes, good point. But, I think then it becomes a habit where that person really isn't thinking about what they are saying. And, yes, the "must be nice" type comments really are just a subtle way of being rude to people.

Of course you do.
But the letter writer can't help how she feels.

Yeah, you can. She can choose to let this go--she chooses not to.

OMG, I don't know, that dog is cracking me up! lol
I kinda feel sorry for him...

LOL. It cracks me up too! He received a treat of yams afterwards. I have many costumes and such for the dog. DD loves dressing him up! She even pretends his ears are pigtails and puts hair decor such as barrettes on them. He's a good dog to endure it.
