I was riding in the car with DD and we were chatting about stuff. She is the top scorer on her basketball team. Anyway they had some type of shooting competition. And, she won all 3 events. But, they decided they didnt' want to give her all 3 awards. It was no biggie, just a candy bar or something. But, I mean really? She can't be rewarded for being the best in the rules of the competition. Sheesh.
Well, either think of that BEFORE or whatever. But, I am really sick of rewarding people who we feel sorry for and those punishing those with a hard work ethic. DD works damn HARD to be as good as she is from going to camps, practicing, reading basketball books, etc. Sheesh.
Yeah. I wonder what will happen a few years down the road when all the kids who had their feeling protected get real jobs and have to work with other adults who don't give a hoot about making them feel bad.
It is ridiculous. But we have to make everyone feel good these days. If we don't they will carry around some complex their whole stinkin life.
"why does everything have to be a competition?"
So sick of hearing that.

But that is the battle cry of those who think everyone should be rewarded for showing up.

LGS, I speed-read the title of this thread as, "Too Much Whining"... that could apply as well! Losers whining.
I don't have kids so perhaps I'm not as qualified as others to comment, but seriously...? No wonder the hard work ethic of our country has gone out the window - people now think we should all be rewarded, as Lily said, for simply showing up.

We are seeing it now. The unemployment rate among young people is higher for that age group than at any point since the 1930's. Many of them aren't even looking for work. Those that have jobs expect to be compensated like their co-workers who have been 10 or 20 years on the job.

Well, I could agree with you--but then we'd both be wrong.

I have seen this too. It is mind blowing. Even the people who won't take a minimum wage job because it's beneath them; everyone starts at the bottom and you work your way up!

I've seen lots of people in my job with that mentality. No experience. No certification. They want pay that people with 10 years experience and the certification as well make.
That's just wrong. If you have a contest - the winner gets the prize. I agree that limiting how many events each student can do would be the better option.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
Well, if you want to give other people awards for "participation" or "most improved" or whatever, then that is fine. Just don't change the rules after the fact.
I hate when that happens! Supposedly it helps make things fair and encourage other people to try that might otherwise not if it's the same person winning everything. At least that is the explanation we've been given at events. I thinks it's ridiculous. Those that really want to will participate anyway because they will A. just enjoying participating and not care if they win or B. work hard to improve themselves so they can compete for that top spot. Why is that such a bad thing???

I don't see how "winning" something you really didn't win would make anyone feel good. Oh, you were second, you get the prize. Kids really aren't stupid idiots. Sheesh.
Limiting the amount of games you can compete in would make more sense.
Radio stations do it. You win in any of their call ins, you cant win for the next two weeks. That makes it easier for more to participate and play.
If the games are limited to win one and sit out two then it would give others a chance to participate and win.
BUT if that is not the rules going in, like in this case, then it shouldn't be changed after the fact.

There used to be a time, not too long ago, where the only people that received trophies or medals were the winners. There was also usually second place and third place awards too, but that was about it. Then all this nonsense about "everyone should get a trophy, because everyone is special" began.
I don't think that was an improvement in the way things are done.

But that's a little different. Basically, those are games of "chance", and the radio wants to spread the love to more listeners.
With gaga's daughter, it's something she worked for. It's not "chance".
I agree about the rules going in part--but I don't think it should have to be set up that way. Just because some guy wins the Heisman trophy doesn't mean he can't win other awards such as all-conference, all-American, the Doak Walker, or whatever.

Yeah - I would have been pissed. That happened to me in high school. I didn't get the MVP in basketball senior year because I'd "already had it the previous seasons" - even though I won MVP at almost every tournament we played in that year. I got 'most sportsmanlike' and an apology from the coach. His daughter got MVP.
