Boo on my family. At Thanksgiving (in Canada - so like, 6 weeks ago) I started the Christmas planning with the fam. My parents are fairly isolated in a rural area that is a pain for my brother and I to get to in the winter, because road conditions suck and we both drive beaters. My parents usually stay there for the holidays and we go there - or in my case, do Christmas somewhere else at a random time because I always live so far away or work the holidays. This year I wanted to have a plan!
I proposed Christmas in an exotic location in lieu of gifts, but my Dad says that gifts have been part of his Christmas for 70 years and he's not stopping now! I'm like, okay .... we can do gifts.
Then I pointed out that (as usual) I work Christmas and when would be a good time to do our usual Alternate-Christmas? Or, could we do Christmas in my area (which is also my brothers area) instead so that I could be part of it. Parents thought an alternate time would be good because my grandmother lives in a retirement home in their area and needs care.
I suggested that maybe another part of the family could be responsible for care this year and maybe they could bring her down to my area and drop her off with my aunt and uncle and then we could all do Christmas together.... Mom thought that was a not-so-good idea, so I asked them to come up with an alternate date.
The very next day, my mom says that Christmas in my area is a GREAT idea, and she'd love a vacation from the caretaking, so they're coming down and I get to do Christmas with them. Yay! Plans made!
Fast forward six weeks to today ....
texted my brother (we'll call him Golden Boy....) to see if his girlfriend will be participating in Christmas so I can plan for gifts. He responded that the two of them would be at my parents' place for Christmas because it is on the way to her family's place for New Years. So, apparently Christmas down here that I can be a part of is apparently cancelled, and nobody bothered to tell me. So, alone for the holidays again, it seems.
Apparently Golden Boy's plans supersede family plans. He's included in Christmas and I'm out. Good to know. Glad I was kept in the loop.
I shouldn't be surprised. Or hurt. Such is the way my family works. But i am. I haven't called my parents yet to find out what went wrong. I'm too upset. And I don't want to hear about it.

Yep, know this with my family. I make plans, try to have a holiday at my house at least once every 2 years (we are talking either Thanksgiving, christmas, or easter) get blown off each time. It sucks.

Why does that mean you are out? To me that means the plans have changed.
I guess I don't know enough about the whole situation but it doesn't sound like that much of a big deal.

I just found out that more than likely my brother and his kids will be here Christmas morning. Usually they come later. But they will be here and be their smart mouthed selves. I really hope he takes them back to Alabama.

They've changed in a way that means I can't be a part of them. Which my family knew.
Oh, I see.
Sorry to hear that.

We should all plan a TG holiday, screw the families.
Sold. Perhaps a Geek Christmas Cruise?
A geek cruise at Christmas would be awesome. I actually suggested it for us for next year.

G gave me my 10 year anniversary present tonight I cried for an hour. I think he just may love me after all...
You know, without that last sentence, that could have been taken any number of ways.

I have a fever. Have had a low grade fever since Saturday. Just enough to make a person feel like poo.
Tig, I would say you could come here but I know we are way too far away.

Please call your parents and ASK THEM whether the plans have changed, in a way that locks you out of the celebration. See what they say.
If they say anything like, "Oh, we didn't realize that", then you say, "well, you realize it now. So what are you going to do to fix it?"
If they say "Oh, that's too bad, but it's better for us to not travel, and it's better for your brother", you say, "Okay, it's clear that you don't care about ME at all". and hang up.
If they say "No, nothing has changed, we made plans with you and that's what we're doing". then tell them that Golden Boy doesn't think that's true, and they should certainly straighten that out.
The hold your breath ...

This conversation will likely happen. Probably via text cause I work nights all week. And without the bolded part . . .
We should all plan a TG holiday, screw the families.
Sold. Perhaps a Geek Christmas Cruise?
Perfect. And WE all WANT you with us, Tig.
No mean, angry people allowed on the TG Christmas Cruise. I cannot take one more mean, angry, wrong thing in my life or I'm simply going to fold. Let's go on a happy cruise.
Awe, Tig, I understand how you feel. My family scheduled Christmas on the weekend I worked, three years in a row. The fourth year, we had it scheduled so all of us kids could be there. Two weeks before the date, they changed it. One of my sisters work schedule got changed, so they changed Christmas so she could be there. My family was unable to attend once again.
We never went back for a family Christmas with my siblings. My parents never went again either. That was 12 years ago.
It feels like a slap in the face. But, I let it go. Christmas with my siblings has no importance in our life at all now. It took a few years to get over it, but I did.
What's really funny is, they blame me for not making an effort to come. Bwahahaha

(((((Tig))))) I am sorry to learn of your family's change of holiday plans without keeping you in the loop. While I don't have family, IVY on the feelings of having to spend the holidays alone.
I will also be spending my holidays alone. It is unfortunate everyone is so far away. It would be great to have some company. While I have requested close to two weeks off from December to January (months in advance), I am unable to travel to spend time with my friends as I normally do every year. My finances have been perilous this year, and I cannot afford the plane ticket, hotel room for 9 days, and the rental car. My friends asked me when I am arriving for Xmas this year, and I had to tell them I could not afford to.
So it is just me. My local friends usually do Xmas with her family (since I normally travel at the season), so I will be alone, like I was on Thanksgiving. I have gotten used to at least being with others during the holidays, but I have been alone so many times before, so I am sure I can find things to keep me busy and occupy my time.
Tig, I sincerely hope that you can find some folks to visit with at the holidays.

I wonder whether your local friends would make room for you in their hearts and in their family gatherings, if only they knew you would like that.
I think you should tell them.

My friends already know I will not be travelling for Xmas. Their family gatherings involve the kids and their families flying in, so there is a large crowd. I barely know her family (only her dad and brother, and even then just barely). I am sure if she wanted me to attend, she would extend an invitation. I can understand families just wanting it to be a family event, though. And due to the "dysfunctional" family dynamics, which she likes to vent about, I would not want to deal with watching all the drama.
But thanks for the suggestion. Things in my world happen a bit differently. I have been alone for thousands of Xmases. What's one more? ;)
