This is like asking why there aren't more of any one group doing any thing.

I want to know why more women aren't sanitation workers.  I never see garbagewomen, only garbagemen.  It's discrimination!!!!

Mine too. But remember, Gaga lives in a small town where gender roles are strictly adhered to.

Honestly I have never met a guy who actually looked good in a bikini speedo.

C and I were talking about going to see the Nutcracker again.

Now. I love it. Don't get me wrong.

When C was in 4th or 5th it was a class field trip.

So here we all are with a 150 prepubescent boys and girls just coming into themselves and aware of their bodies and everyone else's and Mr. AINT GOT NOTHING TO PROVE dances out on the stage.

Well. From then on out no one was watching the ballet.

It was a hot topic for the rest of the school year.

I am not expecting "other women too". I am expecting that women who want to coach and can coach get the opportunity. Sheesh.

And they do--in numbers never seen before, especially as the teaching force becomes decidedly more female.

Mostly, though, coaching at the high school level is not a desired position.  More schools have to ASSIGN it than they have quality applicants of either gender.  Maybe the football team has some good applicants, sometimes wrestling and basketball, if you are lucky, the volleyball and soccer.

Most other sports, especially the JV and junior high sports--the administration just has to assign them to some poor teacher who doesn't want to do it because the fact is, NO ONE wants to do it.

Varsity football, yeah, you might get some interest.  Junior high track?  LOL!!!!  Not a chance.

Pretty much. The marquee sports have interest ( they can be different sports in different schools) and the rest get assigned to whatever teacher wants the extra money (which is not much at all). When DH coached high school, we averaged it out to about 25 cents an hour.

Women are still the primary care takers at home. They make the car pool runs, they make dinner, they get the homework done. They do not see themselves as having time to volunteer by coaching. Men tend to have more flexible time at home and so they volunteer. It's that simple.

In college, if you played in college, immediately upon graduation you can get a job as an assistant coach at the same level (play D1, get a D1 job etc). You don't need to start out coaching 5th grade rec and work your way up. It just isn't neccessary.

Of all the women coaches we know, and we know a lot, 80% are single. The 20% that are married - all but 2 of them are childless by choice. The 2 with kids, both have husbands who work from home and can be the one who runs to school to pick up a sick kid, or can pick up and move every few years. Most female coaches with male spouses don't have the flexibility to move every few years - the man's job isn't that flexible. So they tend to quit when it gets too much to manage.

But what do I know after 25 years married to a professional coach?!

Absolutely. Very few college coaches start out at the high school level. It's not unheard of, but it isn't all that common, either. It's not like coaching high school is some "stepping stone" to coaching in college.

The stepping stone to coaching in college is typically playing in college. For almost every sport.

To coach college golf, they want to know what rank on the tour you achieved. Same for tennis. For the marquee sports, they want playing experience on a D1 team, or national team (this is preferred in soccer, and hockey at least).

If someone submitted a resume saying they coached high school - unless they also coached a significant number of kids onto a national team or Olympic team, they would get put in the circular file.

I want to add: women with lesser credentials and fewer years of experience will get hired over a man with better qualifications in almost every case - for a female team. It's partially for the numbers (having female coaches looks good for their Title 9 review), it's partially because they are cheap (you have to have a female university employee on any road trip), and partially to avoid any instances where a male coach could use his position to get a sexual advantage. It's just the way it is. If you are a female and have a coaching job, you will not get fired for not winning as easily as a man will. It isn't fair, but that's the way it is and everyone knows it.

Of the 120 some odd major college football coaches, I know of only one (Gus Malzahn, Auburn) who coached at the high school level. There could be a couple of others I don't know about--but it isn't common.

On the other hand, to your point, there is only one major college coach who DIDN'T play football at the college level (Mike Leach, Washington State).

The numbers would be pretty similar for basketball.
