A POW is not the same thing as someone being held because of their ties to an entity that wants you dead.
POWs are still out there. Our own people are POW's in those countries you want to have compassion for. Those who want you dead are not holding them for the purpose to gain information. They are holding them to inflict pain and suffering on as many as possible.
I, too, know I wont change opinions either.
So I guess it is what it is.

Just because we label someone an "enemy combatant" and whisk them away to black sites doesn't make it ok.
Do you really think it's ok for our own servicemen to be treated the way we've treated other prisoners?
F_U_C_K this, it's like talking to a brick wall. I'm walking away from this thread.

How would you like them to get information from people who want us dead? Do you think if we ask nicely they'll tell us what we need to know? You all must be living in some utopia if you don't think this is necessary. I'm glad there are those who's job it is to do this because I personally could not but I'm smart enough to realize it IS necessary.

Well, Tinydancer, from the posts about this and Japan recently, the United States should just sit back and let everybody kill us brutally and do nothing about it so that we can be the "nice" ones.
Of course, that won't last long, because we'll be dead.

NO ONE likes torture (well except those sick SOB's cutting peoples heads off) but sometimes you have to do what you have to do no matter how unpleasant it is. I said this on another thread but I'll say it here as well. America is always the bad guy until they need us then we're the first ones they call. We are the most generous nation in the world even though the rest of the world thinks we suck. War is awful and we do what we need to keep OUR nation safe because no other country has our best interest at heart.

I've always loved this passage from "A Few Good Men" with Jack Nicholson.
"Son, we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinburg? I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You weep for Santiago, and you curse the Marines. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know. That Santiago's death, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to."
I think we're quick to condemn those who do the things no one else will do to save lives and defend freedom. JMO.

There are lots of different kinds of people in the world. Just because you can't stomach something doesn't mean you shouldn't appreciate the people that can when it benefits you.

Yes. The price of liberty is the blood of good men and women. And, there is evil that needs to be DESTROYED. Not coddled. Not petted. Not put into Club Gitmo with 3 squares, a gym and Netflix.

Maybe if we chop their heads off instead we can get hordes of young men to join our cause (sarcasm)? Fighting people who would do this isn't accomplished by being "nice". Evil needs to be eliminated before another 911 happens. It's only a matter of time if we aren't vigilant and harsh.

So we do nothing? Just turn over and play dead? Welcome it in and not try to fight it?
I don't understand your way of thinking.
Should we fight or not? Should we try or not?

So you do nothing...lol. I will fight it with everything I have, not make excuses for why they want us dead. People who can chop your head off without a second thought are what we're up against. Let's build a campfire and sing kumbya (sp?). I bet that would stop them. They'd see how nice we are and just stop.

The information we gained through some of the methods, saved countless lives, American lives, maybe your life, because the info provided data on future attacks and methods. And as for the bogus Rectal Rehydration? That was taken from medical reports, medical records kept because we, the American taxpayer, funded the best medical care to those prisoners they had ever experienced. Those rectal rehydrations were colonoscopies! and the CIA's report is bogus.

I hate to sound stupid, but why?
flan
Because the had data in the report that had nothing to do with the "torture", trying to get people to believe all treatment of torture.
Seriously? putting medical care in the report implying it was torture? This was a bogus investigation and is a bogus report. An agenda for the outcome was set and they did their jobs like good little civilian workers and put everything in it using terms that implied all this was done as acts of torture. So now, on the global arena, once again, there is an unearned stain on our reputation.

I haven't been following the story that closely. Thanks for the explanation.
Sorry if I came off harsh Flan, but that report has riled the world and it is BS. Not all of it. We do use torture methods to extract data, but they are not physically harmful, I am afraid that the world will look at us as though we are similar to ISIS and beheading people and posting the execution of youtube. It frightens me that this current administration is focused on destroying our reputation and pushing an agenda that is so against what we are.

So do we just let it run rampant? What about that teen girl that recently burned alive? 98% of her body was burned. The only thing that wasn't were the soles of her feet. Someone doused her with lighther fluid and set her on fire? I would have no problem whatsoever pulling the lever on the electric chair or firing a bullet into that perpetrators' heart.

That is truly upsetting! I understand how you feel.
I think it is amazing that people are soooo much more upset over a few terrorists being waterboarded or having underwear on their heads than of 3000+ people falling to their deaths and being burned alive in the Twin Towers. Wow.
But, OMG the REPORT! Oh OMG what will the WORLD think of us! OMG!
And complaining that releasing the report puts our people at risk is pure hypocrisy. What put our people at risk, was torturing prisoners.
That is a statement of pure BS.
Our people would be "at risk" REGARDLESS of whether we tortured anyone, or not. That's not even given as a reason for ISIS or whomever taking Western prisoners.
Well, in 2004, an American prisoner was beheaded by extremists who gave the reason as "revenge for the U.S. torturing prisoners".
Also, military and intelligence analysts are saying that Isis will be using this as its #1 recruiting tool for years to come and that right now, our troops and embassies are at a greater risk because this info came out.
Uh huh. Their "excuse". Anything is an "excuse". And so far Obama's Apology Tour and Oh we are sooo sorry and America Sucks hasn't really worked the wonders with ISIS.
You are feeling sorry for people who would like to see you dead. Understand that? Should I feel sorry for someone who wants to see me dead when they are tortured to find out how this may happen?
I don't. And I wont.
Should we feel sorry for those who want us dead? No. I don't.
We should treat all people the way we want to be treated. By treating prisoners of war so savagely (and I mean the stuff that went beyond enhanced techniques and into really twisted ****ed up torture) we are showing the world and ourselves that we have become terrorists as well.
I know that I probably won't convince anybody to rethink their positions, but I really just can't fathom how anybody can think some of the things we did to people was ok.
Thank you!
Also, I think we do bear some responsibility to NOT take "an eye for an eye". That is exactly what the terrorists do and we think it's wrong when they do it. You should not allow your enemies to force you to stoop to their level. And that's exactly what we did...except we amped it up about 100 notches. Bombing civilians would be equal to the twin towers. Kidnapping an individual who may or may not be a terrorist and committing forced anal feeding is disgusting.
Add me to the list.
I think it strips a person of their humanity.
How can you commit these atrocities & go home & play with your kids?
flan
What "atrocities" were committed? Water boarding, rectal feedings? Big whoop.
Maybe if we chop their heads off instead we can get hordes of young men to join our cause (sarcasm)? Fighting people who would do this isn't accomplished by being "nice". Evil needs to be eliminated before another 911 happens. It's only a matter of time if we aren't vigilant and harsh.

Why would you think this was the act of a terrorist?
I don't care what was done to a terrorist. Do what ever you want to them. Get what ever information you can from them and then throw them away.
If anyone thinks they give a rats butt about anything they did, you are incredibly naïve.
