What Every Woman Should Know About Heart Attacks

4898.jpg

Heart disease has historically been thought of as a man’s disease, but it turns out that it is the number-one killer of women. We bring you the bottom line on everything you should know about women and heart disease.

Bottom Line/HEALTH: Dr. Steinbaum, what should every woman know about heart disease?
Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum: Heart disease is the number-one killer of all women, greater than all cancers combined. It is critical for all women to understand that 80% to 90% of the time, heart disease is preventable. So if she knows her family history and pays attention to her risk factors, she can actually prevent heart disease from happening to her.
Bottom Line: Let’s talk for a minute about heart attacks specifically. What are the differences in the symptoms between men and women?
Dr. Steinbaum: Men oftentimes get chest pain—it’s very classic. In women, we know that two weeks before a heart event, very often there might be sleep disturbances or flulike symptoms or even shortness of breath or chest discomfort. And during a heart attack, one of the most common symptoms is shortness of breath or chest pain. There could be jaw pain, back pain, arm pain, nausea and, again, that flulike symptom. But if a woman finds herself having difficulty doing things that she used to do…if these symptoms develop during that…then she needs to go see her doctor, because maybe something is wrong with her heart.
Bottom Line: What about women’s need to take care of everybody else—does that play a factor in all of this?
Dr. Steinbaum: Women are under an exorbitant amount of stress today. It is so important that she pays attention to her health and her heart, and reaches out not only to doctors for support, whether it be from friends, therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists. Sometimes women ignore all symptoms, and in women, depression, which is very, very common, is something that is dismissed. Women need to put themselves first, before they can take care of anyone else.

The hospitals here offer a heart scan for $49. I need to get that done.

I had a heart attack at 48. I woke up with jaw pain and thought I had been grinding my teeth. Went back to sleep. At work the next day it happened again. That's when I knew something was really wrong. 2 stents, 6 months of physical therapy and several very big lifestyle changes and now I'm probably healthier than I ever was before that.

 How scary!

I admit that I am in the WORST physical shape of my life. I've stopped exercising & am overweight.

AND I have a granddaughter that I want to see grow up...

My first heart attack, I was so young it didn't even cross their minds that it was possible. I was 33. I was diagnosed with acute pneumonia and bronchitis and was told it was the racking cough was the cause of my chest pain and difficulty breathing.

The second time I was 36. I was having the same symptoms and my arm and felt like it was lead and my neck and jaw was burning and hurting. Mom took me to the ER. I couldn't walk in on my own. The second I said my jaw and neck was hurting they had me in the heart care ward.

They told me it was a heart attack and when I questioned them they said that was probably what happened at 33.

Only 1 stent. didn't do therapy for long because it was at the wrong time of day. It started an hour before I had to pick up my kids from school. So I would go for 30 minutes and leave.

Like Tiny, life style changes made the biggest difference.

Lost some weight and learned to let things go. That was the biggy for me. I internalized everything. I had to learn to let things go.

What does it involve? It sounds like a great deal.

Honestly, I don't know. I know St. Vincent's Hospital in Indy was doing it & it looks like Hendricks County is as well.

I'll try to check.

It is probably like what they do during a stress test.

Just so you know, every scan shows some kind of something and it will lead you to a heart cath.

It's one of those things they use to get you in the door and then they keep upgrading you to more and more expensive things.

This is what I found:

WHO SHOULD HAVE THESE SCREENINGS

Heart Scan
A Heart Scan checks for coronary artery disease, which occurs when plaque builds up in the arteries. The American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology have created guidelines to help you and your doctor determine if a heart scan is right for you. You could likely benefit from this powerful screening tool if you:

Have high or borderline-high blood pressure. Blood pressure should normally be less than 120/80 mm Hg (less than 120 systolic AND less than 80 diastolic) for an adult age 20 or over.
Have high or borderline-high cholesterol. Total cholesterol should normally be less than 200 mg/dL. A result of 200 to 239 mg/dL is considered borderline high, and a result of 240 mg/dL and above is considered high.
Have diabetes
Have a family history of heart disease
Are over 40
Are overweight or obese. This means your Body Mass Index (BMI) is higher than 25. View a BMI chart from the National Institutes of Health.
Smoke

Understand your $49 Heart Scan results
Depending on your heart scan scores, you could either have no plaque present or a high amount of plaque present.

A heart scan is not useful if you have low heart attack risk. For example, if you are under 40, don’t smoke and have normal cholesterol and blood pressure. Also, if you have already had a heart attack or had treatment for coronary heart disease, a heart scan won’t be useful. That’s because your doctor will already know you are at high risk and a heart scan won’t provide any new information about your treatment plan.
