When someone says our government the first thing I think of is the president. Most normal people do.

But I know. You are the great and wonderful, all knowing and all encompassing Husker.

whatever.

We had no choice but to pull the movie
No one would show it. My bonus is not happening not because of them pulling the movie
It's not happening because they made the stupid movie in the first place. THAT was stupid...

NK wouldn't have pulled this schist if they had any respect for our president. Since no one here does why should they...

But you could apply the "stupid" standard to half the crap Hollywood puts out. Not really the point.

Hmmm--that might be a valid point--but it's a moot one now since Sony stupidly caved, anyway.

Insulting a world leader (whether he deserves it or not) and a crazy one at that was not a prudent move. And the company is suffering. Because of their stupidity.

Are we seeing the beginning of the end of our free speech? How long until everything is censored?

Selective quoting.  Nice for your credibility.

Um, what?  Those are the words you used.  Here's your entire quote.  It changes NOTHING.

I agree with this.  It also has nothing to do with freedom of speech, or anything else about our government.

I was talking about Obama and how he got into this.  You equated him directly with "our government".

He's the PRESIDENT.  The EXECUTIVE branch makes up 1/3 of the government.   You have delved into ridiculous territory to say Obama has nothing to do with the government.

Lily - the government didn't tell them to pull the movie so this is not about freedom of speech.  It's actually the free market in full freedom mode.  The theater chains chose not to show it - so there is no demand.

And there is NOTHING that requires the theater chains to take risks because of Sony's decisions on principle because some people want them to.

Just to clear a few things -

This was not a parody. A parody is an imitation. And blowing up his head is not a parody. Comparing that to making fun of how Margaret Thatcher talks makes no sense.

Any movie made while Hitler was alive, even IF it portrayed killing him, would not have received world wide publicity and acknowledgement, and even if it did - computers were not an issue then. Comparing any type of publicity from the 40s to now ignores the realities of progress.

Sony screwed up - Sony should fix it. We demand apologies from public figures that make stupid comments all the time - this is no different.

I understand that it was not our government pulling the film.

However it is another countries government and they have made enough of a fuss to stop the release of an American movie.

Another country just controlled an American business.

Another country reacted to something an American business did that was out of line.  Was hacking the system right?  No.

But, look at it this way.  A guy has a wife and she's a bitch with a capital B, but she's still his wife.  This guy comes up to him and says "Man, your wife is a Bitch.  All I can think about is all the ways I want to kill her.  Thinking of her head exploding and her brains splattering everywhere makes me happy!"  The guy is going to get decked.  Is punching him right?  No. But, it's understandable.  And if the husband holds him down and keeps punching him until he apologizes - apologizing is the prudent thing to do b/c he was in the wrong in the first damn place.

No.

it's like this.

N.K. and the rest of the world knows that America can be controlled. That a few threats and some leaked information is all it takes.

I completely understand those who don't want their personal business out there.

But what has been accomplished?

The damage is done and nothing is to stop more information from being revealed.

I don't like the example that has been set.

Oh well.  I think the safety of our children is more important.  And by pulling the movie, they have probably saved the other movies from tanking.  Also - I don't like that the movie was made in the first place.  It was in horribly bad taste so I don't care that Sony pulled a really bad movie that had crappy reviews anyway.  It's just not worth it.

"Bruce Nash, founder of box office site TheNumbers, said that Christmas is one of the busiest times of year for moviegoing and is particularly strong for family films. Any perceived danger or threat might have depressed ticket sales.

“It was never going to be one of the big films of Christmas and clearly chains are going to be concerned about making sure people feel comfortable bringing their children to ‘Annie,’ ‘Into the Woods’ or ‘Night at the Museum,” said Nash."

And exactly how is my analogy wrong? Just because you think North Korea is the bully? Sony started it. NK finished it. Don't start something you have no control over.

Your analogy is not even close to the same thing because a domestic depute is not going to cause a movie to be pulled because some foreign country doesn't like it.

Saved our children? No. Our children just became bigger targets. Because now the example has been set.

All another country has to do is make a little noise and an American company folds.

So what is next? The N.K. doesn't like something else, something bigger like maybe a magazine article talking about the situation over there. So they make a little noise, a few threats and it gets pulled.

Maybe everything we watch, read, listen to or any thing else be run by them first.

At one time, N.K. would have basically gotten the finger.

It's a bad idea to poke the bear.  And if you do, you suffer the consequences.  American businesses decided they didn't want to be a part of this.  So they backed away.  They have that right...

Also, we are under the threat of terror EVERY DAY in this country.

Should we stop flying? Stop going to major sporting events when a bomb threat is called in? Stop reporting news that is negative towards Muslims and Islam because they threaten to retaliate for such stories?

Part of the way to defeat terror is to be as vigilant as we can possibly be--but continue to live how we want to live.

just because sony exhibited poor judgment doesn't mean WE have to--they screwed-up with a poor idea for a film--they deserve to lose money--the graphic depiction of the murder of a sitting head of state is bound to be provocative but, regardless of the target, is a bad idea--pretty damned stupid

if you want to see pulling it as somehow " bowing to terrorists " then go ahead--personally see it as bowing to decency and honor--why allow the production / promotion of sheer crap under our aegis ? we have more sense than that, more decency--regardless what others in the world may think

First of all, are you saying that anything that doesn't meet a certain standard (set by whom, I might ask) be censored????

Second, half of everything Hollywood puts out could fall into the "sheer crap" category--but it never bothered anyone until now.

If you really can't see how awful this is, no one is going to be able to change your mind. Just a thought though....there was an actual blood bath in aurora Colorado, actual harm, and not one of the big 5 called for a ban on guns. But one leader, thousands of miles away, whispers a threat snd we ban a film? The mind boggles.

Sony screwed up - Sony should fix it. We demand apologies from public figures that make stupid comments all the time - this is no different.

BS.  Your answer is a cop out.  You know darn well that it is a bad idea to give in to thugs and terrorists.  I don't see how you can justify support of such a regime.

There you go - assuming things again.  I do not "support" the North Korean regime.  I said I understand why they are pissed off.

Advocation of giving in is support.

Now this is a ridiculous post. So because she doesn't agree with you it means she supports NK? You must be joking or do you really belive this crap you posted?

Also, we are under the threat of terror EVERY DAY in this country.

Should we stop flying? Stop going to major sporting events when a bomb threat is called in? Stop reporting news that is negative towards Muslims and Islam because they threaten to retaliate for such stories?

Part of the way to defeat terror is to be as vigilant as we can possibly be--but continue to live how we want to live.

And the movie theaters are doing just that.  Living how they want to live.  They made a business decision.  They felt the risk was too high.  They have that right.

No they aren't.  Before all this they would have shown it.  They caved. it's not a choice they wanted to make.

What are you talking about? You make no sense.

What are you talking about?  They were absolutely planning to show the film before all this happened.  Duh

Of course they were...and then there was a threat.  And they made a sound business decision not to show the movie.

It has nothing to do with me.  It has to do with her sympathy for their position.

um, yeah.  Like I said it wasn't a decision they wanted to make or would have otherwise made.

Of course it wasn't! That's what this is about...a threat was made, they decided to pull. What are you arguing about?

You are arguing that they didn't cave when they did.  It's not even clear it's the best business decision.  They almost undoubtedly would have made money with this much publicity.

The theaters have absolutely no reason to make themselves a target.  They did not make the movie - they are collateral to this.  They have the RIGHT to not get in the middle of this by choosing not to show the movie.  It's isn't their fight.
