Two New York police officers were ambushed and fatally shot while sitting in their patrol car in Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood Saturday. The suspected gunman has died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
In a press conference, New York City Police Commissioner William Bratton said the officers, Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos, were killed with "no warning, no provocation." They were shot in the head by a gunman standing by the passenger window, the commissioner said; the shooter, identified as Ismaaiyl Brinsley, then entered a nearby subway station and killed himself.
The gunman shot a woman in Baltimore on Saturday morning before traveling to New York City, Bratton said. Baltimore police sent a "warning flier" to the NYPD, but the police commissioner said the warning fax arrived at approximately the same time the shooting occurred.
Bratton said the shooting didn't appear to be an act of terrorism. The police say they are investigating the gunman's motives, and as part of their investigation they will look into anti-police Instagram posts which have been attributed to the suspect.
Both Bratton and Mayor Bill de Blasio emphasized that anyone who sees or hears threats against police, in person or over social media, should report the threat to the authorities.
Attorney General Eric Holder called the killings "an unspeakable act of barbarism." The Rev. Al Sharpton announced a Sunday press conference with the widow and mother of Eric Garner "denouncing the killing of the two NYPD officers" and offering prayers for the families of the victims.
The AP described the scene after the shooting:
"A block from the shooting site, a line of about eight police officers stood with a German shepherd blocking the taped-off street. Streets were blocked even to pedestrians for blocks around.
"Derrick Thompson, who lives nearby, said the shooting happened across from the Tompkins Houses public housing development.
" 'I was watching TV, and then I heard the helicopters,' Thompson said. 'I walked out, and all of a sudden — this.' "
It's the first fatal shooting of a New York City police officer since 2011, The New York Timesreports.

The people who knew all that protesting was wrong are not about to go out and protest. Why aren't you out there with a sign...lol And this was all over the news so saying there was no news coverage is really not true.

What is there to protest? Yes, it is an awful tragedy, but the article makes no mention of race, religion, or any suspected motive at all. The shooter is dead, so howling for his blood is out. There is no clear target for a protest. I could see a vigil, or a minute of silence, but what exactly do you expect people to do otherwise?
They were shot because they were police officers in retaliation of the police shootings in Ferguson.

So who do we protest? Nut jobs who shoot cops because of other protests? I wouldn't even know what to write on a sign. "I'm against killing cops" "death to cop killers" "not enough protesting" It's hard to protest for something that just about averyone agrees with except for the criminals and they won't care.

I want to know why there were not a lot of arrests during these protests that turned into riots.

Yes, it WAS all over the news.
The shooter was mentally ill. He committed suicide.

I don't think he was mentally ill at all. He was an idiot and a puss...he didn't want to go to jail so he killed himself...

This. I believe also he killed his ex girlfriend just to be mean since he knew he would most likely die that day.
Very tragic. For what it's worth, I have seen this all over the news, it's not being ignored. I also wonder what we should be protesting? I'm against murder, I guess I could make a sign about that, but what should I do about this other than say It's sad and horrible and I pray for everyone's safety.
An officer was shot in Florida, in St Louis and 3 were stabbed in France. One was fired on in Boston. All in the past two days. I hear these items on the news because I listen to many news stations.

A thug was shot and the whole country became involved. Ball teams making "statements" as they entered ball fields and T-shirts being worn during games. There were conversations on nation levels and it became THE news for several months.
Now cops are getting shot and stabbed because of the whole thing and it gets a 3 minute blurb in the nightly news.
Where are the teams making statements and the national level conversations?

Aren't the Yankees offering to pay for schooling for the kids? That's a pretty big public statement. I'm not sure why these issues have to compete. It comes from the same core issue, murder is bad.

It IS generating a lot of talk. You just don't want to admit it.
I hear them all talking about it (the news media) so I'm not sure what more they can do either. I was just as frustrated with the rioting and idiots. Yes Brown was a thug but there are many others who are not who are targeted by the police for no other reason than they are black, and I'm not talking about the crap Husker tries to say is harassment. There were some legitimate points about police and people who are not white being targeted. Unfortunately they ruined it by rioting and picking the wrong poster child for their protests.

It has been mentioned on the news maybe three times here.
I don't know where the shaming is. The big mouths that were shaming the police are not shaming this violence against the police.

I've heard it many many times and on many many stations. I think you need a new news to watch...lol. I've even heard that officers called out the mayor for supporting the protests and lot's of politicians saying how bad this is. I guess you're just missing it all because it's out there.

Lily, I don't understand what you are so pissed off about. It's all over the news. It's trending on freaking Facebook. No, there are no protests, because nobody sane will disagree that killing cops is wrong.
Geez.
And I don't understand why everyone is not more pissed off.
Ok so it is on the news here and there.
Have you seen entire news casts dedicated to this? Are talking about how it is the result of the thugs who were rightfully shot?
No.
"oh, it's sad. but can you do"
It makes me mad that Al Sharpton and his cronies are not calling for an end to THIS violence.

I can understand your point lily but just like some of the protesters picked the wrong poster child in Ferguson this is not something to be exploited no matter how much that was wrong.

Because it had NOTHING to do with that. NOTHING.

Yes Flan. The shooter said he did it in retaliation for Brown and that other one in New York.
That is what I heard from the news I saw on it.

That's not true. The man posted on social media that he was planning on taking 2 lives for the 1.
The shooting comes at a time when police in New York and nationwide are being heavily criticised for their tactics following the chokehold death of Eric Garner, an unarmed black man who was stopped by police for selling cigarettes illegally.
Thousands rally against police violence in New York
US media reported a possible link between Brinsley, who was black, and anger over the death of Garner, based on a social media posting.
A post on Saturday on the site Instagram that appeared to be by Brinsley showed a silver pistol and said, "I'm Putting Wings On Pigs Today. They Take 1 Of Ours ... Let's Take 2 of Theirs."
The post included hashtags for Garner and for Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager who was killed in August by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri.
Hundreds of people protesting against police violence filled the Mall of America in Minnesota on Saturday, chanting "Black lives matter", causing part of the mall to shut down.
Demonstrators around the country have staged protests since a grand jury decided on December 3 not to indict the white officer involved in Garner's death, a decision that closely followed a Missouri grand jury's decision not to indict the officer who killed Brown.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
No matter how bad the protests about Browns death I don't think turning this into the same kind of thing would be a good idea. I don't want anyone burning stuff down in the name of these policeman and their families.

I don't want the protesting. I don't want the rioting.
I want that loud mouth Al and Johnnie to get on TV and talk about how awful it is and call for these people who are harboring grudges to stop perpetuating the violence.
I want Obama to stop saying how these thugs could have been his kids and talk about how these communities need to stop breeding hate and anger.

Police Commissioner William Bratton told reporters that investigators believe the gunman acted alone, but he said that police still need a full understanding of Brinsley's actions.
See what I mean? Flan is proving that it isn't making the impact it needs to make.

You just told me to go away on a thread I started. Not going to happen.
And "go away" is something a 10 year old says.
You are proving my point that the reason these cops were killed is being missed by the general public.
By the end of the first day, the basic information was out there about Brown and the other guy. You had a basic grasp on what was happening.
In this case, you don't know what it was about and haven't had it in your face constantly.
You are proving my point.

All I have heard is that he ran to the subway & shot himself.

So, what the rest of us have heard means nothing? The fact that you only pay attention to media outlets that are downplaying this does not mean it isn't true.

I did check a few news stories, but didn't find what you said.
All that means is that I didn't find it. Shooting the girlfriend first seems to indicate another motive.
I heard a story about this. There was a black woman with a sign that said something like "I am against police brutality, but I am also against brutality to the police". She had the right idea. In her interview she said violence has to stop, all it does is bring more violence.

I could perhaps agree with that if not for the fact that he sought out the police and killed them with "sucker punch" type shots. If it was about the girlfriend - kill her and then himself. This is the other way around, he decided to make a statement and decided he may as well take her, too.

I agree with her.
So do I. This type of violence perpetuates the violence and racial stereotyping.
