I survived Christmas at the ex's...barely.

Oldest DGD was having a major meltdown. I can't deal with it. The house is small, I was tired (it took me an hour to get there).

I left after 25 minutes. I'm the worst person in the world...

And you also worked all day - did anyone else, besides you and DH?  Hopefully they'll appreciate the effort you made.  I'm sure DH does...

She has SERIOUS health issues, I realize that.

But after our trip to Orlando last July, I realized that I simply don't like her. It tears DH apart when he tries to comfort her & she screams, "Go away, I hate you." She will hurt herself and others.

Oh, flan, I feel so bad for your DH. Hopefully he realizes it's not him, but her condition. She can't control herself yet, maybe someday she can, but she may never be able to control herself. I know she has serious medical problems and I'm sure the stress of the holidays have not helped her one bit.

Give DH an extra hug tonight. He will need one.

Got up at 0700 and wanted to get out of the house. All the railings at my apartment building are supposed to be worked on today, so a lot of chipping, noise and dust all day. Went to the mall. Sat and watched the endless parade of humanity go by in search of after season sales. I was looking for another calendar so I can have one at work and another at home. The calendar store was 50% off everything, and I found a 12 Doctors calendar so picked it up. Will take it to work and use my other Doctor Who calendar featuring the 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th Doctors at home. That was the find of the day! smile

I have gotten a lot done since being on vacation. It's rather nice to not be travelling for once. Will just enjoy the time off, because it's back to work on 1/5/15.  Tomorrow I plan to visit with friends.  My turn to pick up dinner.  Will probably do pizzas, salad greens and a pumpkin pie.  Looking forward to dinner tomorrow!  biggrin

Thanks, Czech. I know we've talked about her before.

I have seen nothing that works with her. She attends a special-needs school and sometimes has to be sent home. Her mother is so out of her depth, as is her grandmother. They try to reason with her...

You know what I would love to try with her? Have you ever seen the squeeze machine that Temple Grandin invented? Of course, that will never happen, but my gut tells me that, when she is consumed with rage, she can only be reached on a physical level.

Thanks for listening,

flan

Is she too big and dangerous to be hugged and held when she's having a tantrum?

ed, she is 11 but very small for her age. When she is consumed with rage, yes, she is dangerous.

I understand that she has almost no control over her life: she has to take meds at certain times, she has a permanent cath, etc. So often a quiet place will help, but by the time I got there, the situation had already escalated.

I'm sure the excitement of the holidays and all the extra activity had a lot to do with her episode.

Sometimes I can identify the trigger, but not always.

Because I see her infrequently, I am more removed. In a household with a severely handicapped child, so much attention is spent on them that the other kids (girl 10, boy 5) are often left to their own devices.

And it's often like walking on eggshells...

That's similar to my friend Moochie's family. Boy is 14 and severely autistic. He's fine if parents stick an electronic device in front of him with available wifi and he has a quiet place to go to. Little girl who is 10 gets excessive babying to make up for brother. She will go stand in the hall and cry if everyone isn't focused on her every minute. I don't know what they are going to do with either kid as they get older. I raised my kid and honestly like to socialize with people who don't have young ones.

Oh, if boy doesn't have an electronic device he is off the chain miserable.

He probably likes the electronics because he can CONTROL them.

Perhaps, he also has to wear a headset all the time. I often wonder if maybe he's schizophrenic and the sounds drown out whatever else he is hearing.

It seems that there are very few things that make her happy anymore. Mealtimes are often a battle (side effect of one of the meds).

She has a kink in her carotid artery & an enlarged heart because of that. I often wish surgery was an option, but I don't even know if that's possible. Last I heard, she takes 15 different meds a day.

And, of course, there are other health issues...

Poor thing Flan. The carotid artery is really hard to operate on. We do those at my hospital but it's just to remove plaque. The patient has to stay awake so that anesthesia can keep them talking. If they start slurring then we know to let some blood flow because the brain isn't getting enough. That is probably our most cancelled case, mostly due to the health being too poor for the patient to endure it.

Thanks for the info. We are lucky to have Riley Hospital here.

I know I'm not a doctor or nurse, but I keep thinking that if there were only some way to straighten out the kink so the blood could flow as it should...

Years ago, they did a balloon angioplasty (that's probably the wrong term, but you get the idea). It enlarged the artery a bit, but it didn't last long.

Something like that is way too advanced for my hospital. Poor kid.
