For the record, I am 34, thanks for asking. And thank you for making my day better with your rays of sunshine.
I was not asked to bring anything. Tradionally in our family, the host provides the meal. Last year Christmas was here and I spent two days preparing everything. The only reason we were bring stuffing is because my Aunt is southern and only makes cornbread stuffing, but has always liked my moms bread stuffing. I would never think to offend my host by bringing something without invitation.
I am well aware families are not around forever. My family is literally half the size it was just two years ago. I do not need you to look down on me by reminding me of that.
Pay no attention to her, DG.
Thanksgiving at my son's was: ham only. That's fine. I acknowledge the fact that I am a picky eater.
So we bought a turkey for Christmas.
{hugs}

Both of you are complaining and sound like children.
Maybe I am a bit more touchy about it this year than usual. If you feel like you are being "looked down on" that is your very own special problem.
I told you exactly why I felt the way I do. You have to be even more childish and respond with the way the two of you did.
I cried today because my pawpaw was not there. I didn't care about the food, if I could eat it or not. I cared that I could not hear my pawpaw play his guitar one more time.
So Ya'll go ahead with your whining and complaining cause you are an adult that cant seem to suck it up enough because there is nothing you like at a family gathering.
I will continue to think it is ridiculous and that you should be grateful for what you DO have.
I would give you everything we had today and for the last three weeks for just one more Christmas with my pawpaw. I would eat dirt to have one more Christmas with him.
You just don't understand.
So none of us has lost someone we loved? I buried my husband when I was 38 years old.
But how about RESPECTING the family members that are still living?

So respecting you is important but you showing respect isn't?
And yeah, we have all lost someone. You are still talking about losing your husband. Doesn't it bother you when you hear how someone takes their husband for granted?
Like I said. I think it sounds ridiculous to complain over the menu.

Who is taking their husband for granted? DG is not married.

Right over your head.
Never mind.

Dropped DD off at the airport today 😥 We had a fabulous visit, but it is never long enough. Her plane ended up being delayed - at the pre-flight inspection, it was noted that the brakes on the plane were too worn to be able to land safely. So she spent an extra hour in the airport when we could have been together! Brakes are important, so she didn't mind the delay.
Her boyfriend was lovely. Everyone really liked him, and he was easy going as he joined in all of our traditions. He got the seal of approval from my parents, my aunt and uncle and DD's godmother as well as DH's brother. So he was put through the wringer and came out smiling!
Tomorrow we leave. Lots to pack up. Food to eat still - we are having "Must Go!" for lunch and dinner today. Then a 12 hour car ride tomorrow. Glad I took Monday off.
Sounds like you enjoyed a wonderful visit. I like how you "welcomed" the boyfriend. My family always told the potential in-law how bad we were, once in, we would haul them back kicking and screaming, and they do not get a do over. We can make a future in-law red faced within minutes. If they survive that and STILL marry into our family, they belong to us permanently.
Stay safe on your travel home. It's icy in the north country.
That sounds like us! He got to see us, warts and all and he met everyone who cares about DD. When he met my aunt (also my godmother) he walked right up to her and gave her a big hug and said "I have heard so much about you, I am excited to meet you!" Aunt turned to DD and said "I like him. A lot!"

We are on our way home. Yes, I enjoyed being with my family, as I usually do. I didn't realize I was not allowed to express my frustration to my friends. Every one of us in that room was missing someone. I love my family to death, but they still annoy the crap out of me at times. And I am 100% sure each of them would say the same of me.
I'm really not sure how I was not showing respect. The only place I have complained about what was being served is here. I sat at dinner, ate what I could and made no comment other than to thank my aunt for a lovely time.
DG, family can be a pain. It's perfectly okay to vent. I love my step MIL but she annoys the crap out of me. There. I said it. I like my SIL too but she's a whiny brat. There, I said it. I love my BIL but he's almost 31, been divorced three times, acts like he's 12, and is annoying. There, I said it. My DH turns into an idiot at his parents house. Why? Because they laugh and think it's cute. And I feel like a clod because I am making the kids behave. Yep, it's annoying.
Chef, they grow so fast. He'll be asking for the car keys soon.

You are an adult. You certainly do NOT need anyone's permission to vent here, DG.
So the next time Lily complains about her brother & his kids visiting & fantasizes about running away...you know what to say.
Brother and his kids are the ones that come in and DO complain.
Live like it is a hotel. Makes demands for every meal. Never does anything to help. And expects everyone to do for them and them alone.
All that you are complaining about, they do it. Blatantly and constantly.
So yeah. It gets on my last nerve for an adult to complain about a meal that is prepared for them without their having to lift a finger or shell out a single red cent.
