Cops: Patchogue man dies after falling off trunk of friend's moving car

December 27, 2014 by ROBERT BRODSKY / robert.brodsky@newsday.com

A Patchogue man died early Saturday when he tried to ride through a Farmingville parking lot on the trunk of a friend's car but slipped off and hit his head on the pavement, police said.

Rafael Acosta-Lemus, 21, spent Friday evening at the Tiki Hookah Bar on Portion Road with a group of friends. At about 1:40 a.m. Saturday, they left the bar with plans to get a late-night snack, Suffolk Det. Sgt. Michael Fitzharris said.

Acosta-Lemus and another friend, who were parked on the opposite side of the lot, asked a third friend if they could catch a ride to their car on the trunk of his Volkswagen sedan, Fitzharris said.

The vehicle, driven by a 20-year-old Brentwood man who was not named by police, was moving at a slow speed, but Acosta-Lemus apparently lost his grip because of frost, Fitzharris said.

The other person sitting on the trunk, who police also did not name, could not grab Acosta-Lemus in time, police said.

Acosta-Lemus was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. No one else was injured.

"They were all friends," Fitzharris said. "It's a tragedy all around."

There was no alcohol involved in the accident, and no charges are expected, Fitzharris said.

Anyone who may have witnessed the accident and who has not been interviewed by detectives is asked to call the Sixth Squad at 631-854-8652 or Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.

It was an accident.
Slow speed, no drugs, no alcohol. Yeah, it happens.
This was not a stupid stunt type thing.
Heck, you can just as easily trip over your own feet, fall and crack your head open on the side walk and also be dead.

What is there to hold onto when you're riding on the trunk of a VW?

Falling off, especially when it's ice covered, is predictable. He didn't think of it, and now he's dead. Out of the gene pool.

So?

Tripping over your own feet and killing yourself as your head hits the pavement puts you out of the gene pool as well.

You and I both take reasonable precautions while walking. Like, if the sidewalk is covered in fresh-frozen ice, we might either stay inside, or put ice-grip straps on our shoes.

Almost every person on the planet walks almost every day, and very, very few of us kill ourselves by tripping over our own feet.

How many people try to ride on the trunk of a car when it's icy and slippery, and there's nothing to hold onto?

I think, if there were statistics on the number of people who try to ride on the frozen trunk of a car, and what percentage are seriously injured,

it would be MUCH more risky than sky diving or bungy jumping. Or jumping on a trampoline without side netting.

Darwin Awards go to people who've killed themselves by doing something that's particularly stupid, particularly high risk.

Spouse thinks the driver of the car should be charged with negligent homicide for allowing the guy to try to ride on the outside of the car.

I don't consider riding slowly on the trunk of an icy trunk particularly high risk. Maybe because I did it as a kid and lived. I fell off into the snow and got up laughing.

I also rode on the tailgate of the pickup frequently. I'm still alive.

Accidents happen, ed. I don't see this accident as being any more stupid or high risk then a lot of other accidents.

By the way, the other kids survived just fine.

I'm going to side with Czech on this one. It was just a tragic accident. Very sad. Maybe not the smartest decision he ever made but not a Darwin award winner.

The point is that it COULD have been prevented...with some common sense.

A little risk taking is good for the soul, IMHO. There would be no new discoveries without risk taking, period. The hide in the hole individuals do not make discoveries.

 So this guy discovered...the afterlife?

His friend, riding on the same icy trunk, survived. HE may be the one to make a big discovery.

My point is, risk takers succeed where others fail and once in a while they die trying.

Gosh, I can't believe you can't see the point.
