This is absolutely true.

Sometimes I wish a person got a personal card that you had to swipe to use those handicapped items. Like bathroom stalls and carts.

But you don't.

You have to rely on the courtesy of strangers.

No.  I am perfectly willing to wait when there are others ahead of me.

What I am not willing to do is make decisions based on the TINY CHANCE that a handicapped person will enter that space in the couple of minutes needed to do my business.

So you are admitting you will not wait if you don't have to but you will expect a handicapped person to wait.

Me, either.  The chances that one is going to come into an empty restroom while you just happen to be using that stall is as close to zero as you can get.

I'm not making choices based on something that probably isn't going to happen, anyway.  If it does, so what? It's not like I'm pitching a tent in there.  It won't kill them to wait 30 seconds.

NJN. Right here, you and Husker both said you never seen a visibly handicapped person.

But you said you use them.

Are you visibly handicapped? Does that make you less needing of them when you go in there? No.

If you go in and it is being used, are you able to use the other stalls?

If you can, then why take up the stall another who can ONLY use that ONE?

If you cant, have you ever had to wait on someone to come out of it?

If you don't get in there in time, do you pee in your pants because you have lost some of the ability to hold your urine?

I am not really sure what you are trying to say.

We are saying it's not always just about you.

THAT is the attitude of entitlement.

-- Edited by huskerbb on Saturday 3rd of January 2015 11:25:50 PM

No. You are saying the handicapped person can wait for the ONE STALL but you are not going to wait for ONE OF THREE.

It isn't entitlement to have ONE stall.

It is entitlement to take THE ONLY STALL ANOTHER CAN USE.

What part of THE ONLY ONE can you NOT wrap your head around?

BS.  Not if there is NO ONE there at the time that needs that stall.  Even if there is, while I can let that person go ahead of me, I cannot, like the LW, make that decision for the person immediately behind me.  That is up to them.

Oh you have made your point. You will take the ONLY stall a handicapped person can use so you don't have to wait. But you fully expect a handicapped person to wait on you.

Bravo.

If a regular stall is open I use that one. If they are full I use the next available.

Federal Regulations

Federal laws do not require changing tables in bathrooms. Stores are not required to have changing tables. The stores that provide them are only offering a convenience for their customers. Where changing tables do exist, they only accommodate children under 40 lbs.

Because one of the other stalls will open up in just a few minutes. You have more than one option.

I, and most handicapped, do not.

I never noticed if a bathroom had a changing table or not until I had my son. Now, I can tell you from memory which restaurants and stores have one and which don't.

And I said it doesn't happen that way.

And again, those things are prime examples of DISABLITIY.

You are the one who says one minute you need the handicapped stall and the next you don't.

So do you are don't you?

Does it come and go? Cause that happens too.

Point is, there is ONE stall that a handicapped person can use.

Multiple stalls that those who not disabled can use.

The entitlement is when a non disabled person uses a handicapped stall.

It's simple. If you're in line and the handicapped stall is open, you get to use it.

I will continue to use whatever stall I want to use. People like you make me have no sympathy for people like you. You feel like deserve something you don't. Your line about the ride on carts and having to have a pass to get into the stall proves it. Those ride on carts are there for whoever deems they need them. So sorry people don't fall all over you when you need them to.

The whole damn parking lot at Walmart might as well be " handicapped" parking now.

The handicapped parking may not be the exact same thing, however there are plenty of people do feel entitled to park there without a proper permit, which is illegal. Most likely the same people who feel entitled to use a handicapped bathroom stall when others are available.

Just because there is a law that says you have to have a permit to park in a handicapped parking spot, doesn't mean people care or heed it. Parking lots aren't usually policed except for large malls, so people who feel so entitled can park there and probably not get into trouble. I've seen this also.

NJN, I'm guessing though that since you were temporarily disabled that your doctor got you approved for a temporary parking permit? They do have temporary permits for those who need them after surgery, breaking a leg, etc. and as long as they are showing in the vehicle, I don't have a problem with it. If you didn't bother to get one and used handicapped parking spaces, then you were doing so illegally and should have been ticketed, but as I stated above, most parking lots aren't policed people park there anyway, permit or no permit, law or no law because they feel entitled to use them for whatever reason they can justify. I'm not saying someone who is temporarily on crutches or has a broken leg shouldn't get to park in a closer spot, just go through the proper channels to park there legally.

I currently don't have a handicapped placard because the plastic got brittle and shattered. I don't park in the handicapped spaces. Until I can get to the DMV to get a new one, I can't and won't park in a handicapped spot. Even though I had surgery 6 weeks ago and am still having issues getting around.

Nope, after surgery I parked there illegally. It takes awhile here to get a placard and by then I was off crutches. I don't make a habit of parking in the handicapped spots but I also don't really care what people say about me because I did. I am secure enough with myself that if someone feels the need to call me names that's their issue and not mine. I think some are making too big a deal out of riding carts and bathroom stalls.

So, just so I don't offend anyone, am I also not supposed to use the ramp into buildings and must always take the stairs? And I assume I'm not supposed to use the elevator either - since those are only for people with visible disabilities who remember their swipe card

A quick Google search of the ADA...the wording states that there must be a restroom that is accessible to the handicapped, not reserved for the handicapped.

There has to be a restroom available that you can use. It does not have to be reserved for your exclusive use, nor is it meant to be.

lily, if you were waiting for the handicapped accessible stall, and it was occupied, and a handicapped person exited...you would not be upset right? You had to wait, all the other stalls were empty, but the person was handicapped so it was ok.

What's the difference if the person wasn't handicapped? You still have to wait. Either way, you are waiting.

So let it go. Who cares if the person using the stall has a visible handicap, or if they have a non visible handicap and you are irate anyway because you think they don't deserve to be in there, or if they just wanted to use the only stall with toilet paper and it happened to be that one? The end result is the same. The only part of that equatation you can change is how you feel about it. So why bother being so self righteous ? It changes nothing.

Non visible disabilities are the hardest to understand. I am short of breath within 50 feet and in pain within 20ft. I am also morbidly obese. Nobody blinks when I use the handicap parking at work. Without the placard, it would be impossible for me to get into the building.
There is one woman who usually parks next to be. She has a nice SUV (I have an ancient camry) her disability is not evident. I wish I knew her well enough to ask her, but I just cant. Not my business.

There is no one with an active visible disability on my office floor.
I use the H. stall for my convenience and comfort every now and again.

This. Some handicaps are not visible. It would be a bit ridiculous if folks had to start wearing handicap placards around their necks to prove they have a right to use the stall.

Common sense needs to prevail.

A thousand times this. It's accessible not exclusive. It doesn't mean only handicapped people can use it, it means this is the one they CAN use. Big difference.

 Yes and yes.

And why should the mother with the baby have to wait longer for the stall with the baby changer?  I don't get it.  Abby is wrong.

Why cant that changing table go in a regular stall. Against the back wall and fold down over the toilet? It would fit in most of them.

No, it wouldn't.  And I wouldn't change my baby OVER A TOILET.  Besides, the stroller would not fit, and I'm not leaving my stroller out blocking people and getting ripe for being stolen from.  And it is RARE that someone has to wait.

Why not? It isn't like they are going to fall in. The table thing folds down over it.

And why do you need your stroller? Change the kid in the stroller. it can be done. I have done it more often than not when out with my kids.

Wow.  That is the most ridiculous, entitled attitude I have ever seen.  Change you kid in the stroller so I don't have to wait 2 damn minutes.  You are unbelievable.

Not to mention, there is an entire lot of other spaces.  When there is a line of women waiting to use the bathroom, ignoring the handicapped stall on the off chance an actual handicapped person MIGHT come in is just absolutely beyond dumb.

I do, too.  Usually, I have Baby J with me, and two people just do not really fit well in a regular stall.  Besides that, I'm claustrophobic, and some of those regular stalls are TINY.

What I didn't realize was a woman in a wheelchair was also in line behind me. She got upset when I let someone else use the stall instead of allowing her. Someone else in line piped up and told her she had to wait in line like everyone else.

When situations like this arise, should disabled people be allowed to skip the line and go straight to the big stall? Even if the mother with the baby and the location of a diaper changing station were not a factor, is the right thing to do to let a wheelchair-bound person use the restroom first, even if he/she is at the end of the line? -- TRYING TO BE POLITE

DEAR TRYING: Yes, it is. It's called a "handicapped stall" for a reason. The person with the disability should have been allowed to use it first -- even if he/she was at the end of the line.

So, if handicaps are not visible, then why did the handicapped woman in this sceanio PRESUME that the woman with the baby didn't need to use the handicapped stall as well?

You really DONT get it.

You have OTHER options.

If three stalls are regular, chances are one of those will open in a matter of few minutes.

You are asking a handicapped person to wait when YOU are not willing to.

No.  I am saying I will wait if there are others ahead of me.  Can't you read?   Your handicap seems to run deeper than it seemed.

If there are no others ahead of me, then why would I wait?  That is ridiculous.

Because one of the other stalls will open up in just a few minutes. You have more than one option.

I, and most handicapped, do not.

LOL!!!

And if I happen to be using the handicap one--it will open in just a few minutes, too, so what's the difference?  NONE, except that you think you are entitled to not have to wait when everyone else in the world may just have to.

Personally I don't care who parks in a handicapped space. I long ago stopped letting this be my hill to die on. If someone wants to call the police and report someone then go ahead. Not my cup of tea. If the police want to ticket someone they have every right. But as I said, when I had knee surgery I parked in the handicapped spot because I could barely walk. Judge away. I didn't have the "right" to park there.

Just an FYI, I always use the handicapped stall. I have incredibly bad arthritis in both knees. If the toilet is too low I sometimes can't get up. I may not "look" handicapped but the higher toilet and bars have been a godsend on bad arthritis days. And I'm not going to stop using the stalls that are most convenient for me. If there is a handicapped person in there I will use another stall. If someone comes in while I am waiting I will let them go first. But if no one is in the bathroom I will use it.

I do, too.  Usually, I have Baby J with me, and two people just do not really fit well in a regular stall.  Besides that, I'm claustrophobic, and some of those regular stalls are TINY.

 Amen!!

If you have packages, a coat and purse, it's not easy to manage in a super-tiny place.

flan

And in ALL the times I have used one, I have NEVER come out to find a handicapped person waiting for the stall.

Me, either.  Not once have I ever seen any handicapped person in any public restroom from Las Vegas, to Los Angeles, to Seattle, to Washington, D.C. and everywhere in between.

The chances that one will be using the facilities at the exact same time I will is next to zero.  It's not even a consideration--and it doesn't need to be.

Ya'll really don't see how you sound.

You really re not seeing what you are doing.

You really don't get it.

You keep saying I am the one entitled but you cant see how you are exuding the entitlement.

How dare I expect to be able to use the ONE stall in the bathroom.

How dare I expect another who IS NOT disabled to be courteous.

You don't get it because it hasn't affected you personally.

The selfishness and self centered attitude of each of you is really eye opening.

And in every single post I said a non disabled.

You are the ones saying visibly disabled.

Each one of you have accused people of not really being handicapped. On these boards. You see someone get out of the car and you cant see the limb missing or they don't look like Quasimodo and you say "they aren't really disabled".

You want to see entitlement? Look in a mirror.

And yeah. A baby can be changed in a stroller. I have done more often than not. It wont kill either of you.

And those changing tables are a convenience, not a law.

So they don't have to be in there at all.

Nearly every poster has agreed with me about this issue save one or two.  You are the one who sounds entitled, selfish, and self-centered.

You can use the one stall in the bathroom--you just might have to wait a couple of minutes just like EVERYONE ELSE in the world.

If you are that bad off, maybe you need to wear depends or have a catheter put in or PLAN when you go out. Sorry, the whole world does not have to part the Red Sea for your issues. Most everyone is understanding of people who have issues. If you can't wait a few seconds to pee, then you need to see a Urologist asap and find out what is going on.

I have tried to explain and reason over and over as to why those stalls are important to handicapped people.

But I get called names and mocked and you think that is just wonderfully fine.

Walk a mile in another person's shoes.

Get out of your own little able bodied heads for a minute and put yourself in someone else's shoes.

If you had to live one day like a lot of people you like to make fun of and inconvenience, you would be very ashamed of yourselves.

If you think nobody else on this board has ever had to deal with issues in their lives, you need a real wake up call.

I don't have a problem waiting for someone who needs it.

But you have admitted you don't need it.

Others have too.

If you don't need it. You shouldn't make those who do wait.

You are not willing to wait the 2 minutes for a regular stall to open. Why should I be willing to wait on your able body 2 minutes to get out of the ONE stall I am able to use?

You are the entitled one if you think that is any where near ok.

Because the stall is OPEN for use and it isn't RESERVED only for you. It is available for use to the general public. You don't get to change the rules for everyone else.

LOL!!!  Again, in the THOUSANDS of times I've been in a public restroom, I've never inconvenienced anyone.

I'm sorry you are in the situation you are--but your constant whining and every day pity parties do get old.

What the heck are you talking about?

What issues? The issues in which you NEED to use THE ONLY stall you are able to use? I understand that completely.

Any other issues? Like what? What other issue are you talking about?

Disability is disability. I am not talking about other issues.

Is your leg in a cast? Use the handicap stall.

Need to space to empty a colostomy bag or change catheter? Use the handicap stall.

Cant fit in the smaller stall? use the handicap stall.

Actually disabled in some way? Use the handicap stall.

If you are not disabled in some way. Don't.

It is really that simple.

Yeah, I have had issues with irritable bowel before, and when you have to poop, you need to poop. So, let's just put that out there. But, obviously, if I had a flare up, I had to be a bit careful in planning but I dont' expect the world to change it's ways for me.

You want the handrails so you can power squeeze--use the handicap stall.

I am not wanting a reserved stall. I am wanting the one stall I can use to not have an able bodied person in there when there are other stalls they can use.
