I am not. But that seems to be a theme. That because they didn't immediately fall down and go out and start buying Prom dresses that somehow they didn't "accept" their child. Baloney.
So you have a son and that you have raised as your son and then all of the sudden, oh btw, I am a "she". How do you expect parents to react?
With love & concern, for starters.
flan
Which they did. Just because you don't agree with how they handled it--doesn't mean they didn't show love or concern for their child.
This doesn't read love & concern to me:
In Alcorn's suicide note she writes that her mom told her she'd "never truly be a girl" and that "God doesn't make mistakes."
flan
Because they would rather their child didn't have to spend their life feeling they are living in the wrong body? They they want their child to accept who and what they ARE physically? Just because you don't get it does not mean they did not love their child.

Don't think so.

LOL!!!!! That is the DUMBEST standard ever.
EVERY time you do something your children don't like--they don't feel "loved" at the moment. Lots of times, they even tell you things like "you don't love me, anymore".
That doesn't mean you give in and do everything your child demands or wants just so they never say those words.

That could be said about a lot of teenagers. Most of them don't feel "loved" by their parents during that phase of their life. It is not a parent's job to do and say whatever their children want.

I made one comment. I will stay off this thread.
Who is telling you to "stay off"? We are having a discussion. I don't think people should just assume that they were some horrible parents or didn't love their child. It is tragic all around. I am not putting any words in your mouth one way or the other but just discussing the topic.

You mean like when I wouldn't see her for days while she was on a drinking binge? Or she would go into a irrational alcoholic rage, screaming at me because she couldn't find something?

You ignore the fact that they are not perceiving things the same way. You could love them to pieces and they still might not feel it. And you are assuming these parents were horrible and abusive, when you know very well that teenagers project, over-dramatize and internalize everything. And it is NOT a requirement for a parent to approve of everything their kid feels and does.

By his own hand - which proves his mental illness. You don't know he wouldn't have killed himself with the perfect, pro-transgender parents. This is a very difficult INNER struggle involved with feeling you are in the wrong body. And he lashed out at his parents, blaming them, just like teenagers do.

If not them ,then he would have blamed someone In school who made a comment or someone at the mall or someone in the grocery store ir whatever. Nobody makes you commit suicide. That is on you.
The criminals here are the ones who are preaching the mantra that is is "perfectly ok" and "normal"--when it is not.
Not only do they want to re-shape society for their perversions--but now they want to dictate what happens in everyone's homes, too.

lord--you'd think it would be a matter of common sense only--what i meant when posted " why even ask a question like that ? "--completely unnecessary--it is YOUR child

Compared to what: People that believe in an unprovable God? People that believe in the Big Bang? People that believe in the superiority of one race over all others? People that believe in the innate goodness of mankind? People that are homosexual? People that are heterosexual? People that are monogamous? People that are polygamous?
I think that we, as humans, are all "****ed up in the head", in one way or another, when looked at from the perspective of someone different than us.
"So you have a son and that you have raised as your son and then all of the sudden, oh btw, I am a "she". How do you expect parents to react?" - Lady Gaga Snerd
Since the child is not doing anything illegal or harmful, I would expect loving parents to react in a manner that reflects that.
Personally, I would react with something along the lines of "Well, if that is how God made you, do we need to get you new clothes?", or maybe I might go this route "I understand what you are saying and feeling, but, in High School it might be hard for many of your peers to accept, so, how about we still dress in pants and shirts, like many girls do, and leave the dresses until after graduation."

And therein lies the difference between you and the this person's parents. They believe God made him as a boy and it is his mind that is wrong. And the DNA and body bits back them up. Minds are not the end-all, be-all of reality. The physical reality needs to be dealt with and accepted. We have a division here of people who think the reality is anything someone thinks and feels it to be versus the cold hard facts of biology and physiology. So, it's just amazing to me that one can condemn these parents for how they feel about this.

The suicidal transsexual in the OP wasn't mentally ill, before being driven to suicide by her parents, either.
Yes, he was. A person whose mind thinks their gender is different that that of their body is mentally ill. And can get treatment for it upon request which will be paid for by insurance because it is a mental illness.
Now, you'll probably try to tell me "not anymore" which is not true. It is still classified as a mental illness if you want treatment for it. But, because of politically correct pressure, it can now be alternatively classified as "dysphoria" rather than "disorder" based completely on how you feel about it.
Furthermore - people don't drive you to mental illness.

But, didn't God make his mind and too? In the case of a transsexual, God made both the mind and the body, and for reasons that only He knows, put the mind of a girl in the body of a boy (or vice versa). If He did that, who are we to question Him?
I didn't know so many felt that being gay was like being rebellious or doing something wrong like not studying.
Being gay is what you are. It's the same as having a daughter but you wanted a son so you make her dress and act like a boy. You refuse to allow her to be a girl. A lot of people would agree that was abusive

"Classified as a mental illness" doesn't make something actually a mental illness. To say that it does is as silly as it would be to say that hysteria in women is still caused by wandering wombs (that was the original diagnosis, way back in the day), and the cure was for a medical doctor to cause, by manual manipulation, paroxysms.
And I agree, they don't drive one to mental illness, but they can drive one to mental exhaustion, and a sense that giving up is all that's left.

"God made me that way" or "God made you that way" is an expression used to justify feelings on both sides. God made the process by which children are made, but because of differing factors over thousands of years, that process does not always produce perfect children - otherwise, why would God ever make a child with spina bifida, or other birth defects? Why would he make psychopaths? You have hundreds of generations of sinning people making free will choices everyday that impact their lives, their bodies, and their minds. You have women that do drugs while pregnant, and babies conceived in drunkenness. You have people living near toxic waste sites without knowing it, people choose to eat fake food over natural food every day - you think none of that has an effect on our reproduction and the health of our children? We may have used our talents to make ourselves live longer, but we are still producing children with higher and higher rates of autism. We take hormones to avoid pregnancy, until the day we want to get pregnant. We think nothing of taking over the counter or prescribed medication to make ourselves feel better. And we don't prevent mentally ill people from having children, so we have no idea what genetic issues related to mental health are passed down and then meet up with another person with some interesting mental history in their family.
Choices. We, as humans, make them, and those choices impact not only us, but generations to come. So, you cannot blame God for the choices of humans.

Being gay is not the same as being transgendered.

And you know what is really frustrating about the APA deciding to "change" the classification of transgenders from a mental disorder to a mental "dysphoria", is that they did it to make people feel better. It wasn't based on medical findings - but rather to reduce emotional distress. Now - what is particularly distressing about this is that it then tells people they should NOT be distressed about it. So, if they are unhappy with being transgendered - they are wrong to feel that way and should accept it. But if you don't accept it, or can't, we'll still treat it as a mental illness so you can get treatment. No wonder those poor people are confused.

And with that, I'm out for the evening. It's bedtime for me. I'll make sure that I check this thread tomorrow. ;)
Really? So the APA only came out of the dark ages in 2012? Hysteria in women was simply another way to control women. You know - the most down-trodden group of people EVER. It is yet another example of how society affects the views of psychiatrists more than actual medicine.

Well as long as you have God behind you and you know what is right then who gives a crap how your kid feels. We all know that LGBT community has a high depression rate And suicide rate but that isn't the point is it? It's not the point to keep your child alive. That is the real problem here. You are a parent, it's not your place to make decisions based on your children's genitals. Can't they have one thing all to themselves?
Why can't these parents take their children's safety in mind and tell them once your opinion on LGBT and tell them that while you don't agree that you will leave them to judge their own sexual genders. God will not smite you for doing this but if it's more important to be right then you go on and be right.

So then that isnt very " accepting" if u wont buy dresses too.
Ah hell she can get a job and buy her own dresses but is that your point?
You stop at dresses? I suppose every child has a price on his/her head, a dress isn't very much but then I'm sure it's more than some parents would pay.
There is a very fat line between accepting and actively going out of ones way to stop.
It's not the same thing.

Wow - that's a whole lot of assumptions there. You don't know they were not keeping their child's safety in mind. Life is not easy for transgender people - and these people sought help for their child because he was mentally ill. And no - gender is NOT fluid when you are clearly a male or a female based on DNA, chromosomes and genitals.
